Trickster’s Song [A LitRPG Portal Fantasy]

Description
After a drunken college ritual goes very wrong (or very right), Robin wakes up, naked, in a world of dark priests, angry kobolds, and Lost Gods. The priest wants to crush his will. The kobolds want to catch and eat him. The Lost God, well, it's not yet clear exactly what he wants. None of them care what Robin wants.
Robin would like to explore this new world without all the messy complications, thanks. He finally has a bit of real magic at his fingertips, but the monsters on every side won't let him relax long enough to enjoy it! The only tools he has to survive are his wits, the strange messages that keep flashing before his eyes, and a newly-discovered talent for illusions. It’s nothing game-breaking…or is it?

Good story telling skills and command of language. Few noticable typos so far. Fifty words? How many did it take me to say what I wanted to say? That should be the requirement royal road. - BullerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well... I certainly can't say I've read much that's like the opening chapter on this fiction. It might be because this fiction is wholly original on this front or I just don't read enough of the genre. Could be either I guess.
Story works out quickly, the reader getting a whole lot of information quickly, plot developments likewise being quick about coming to ears. Good enough on that front, though it wouldn't do the story too bad to have a few more chapters soon. 5/5 for now - Dreamwolf969Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a well written tounge-in-cheek take on the LitRPG isekai kind of story. Pacing is restrained but the set-piece situations are explosive. The inspiration for the setting is clearly Dungeons & Dragons but it's not an exact copy. The MC is plagued by a snarky quest system and the blessings of a (almost) dead trickster god. He does have to start from scratch though, naked, hungover and with just one very basic spell but no weapons.
- OwlishRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Grammar is great, haven't noticed any problems while binging. The main character is fun, he isekais after attempting ritual magic while drunk on homebrewed mead, and he knows something about Norse mythology, which seems to have no use in this new world. The other characters, allies and villains, mostly have one flaw that makes them not a cardboard cutout, but it's still early. Give it a try.
- ShadedRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Every way the Author describes the setting and characters makes my pulse quicken. The grammar is fabulous and the v-game system works well with the story! This story is also very funny in my opinion and I am looking forward to seeing more. Read with me as the MC explores this new world with no strength, but cunning and very harsh words.
- TharsultRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I read the first 4 chapters of this story, and immediately went and pre-ordered the roaad to Noviel book on amazon. This was an aabsolutely fantastic star ton multiple levels. I would recommend that everyone read the first 4 and if you like it, pre-order it.
First of all, it has a very cool system. It visually reminds me of a white wolf game, but the numbers and powers are clearly and wildly different, but its got the same physical-spocial-mental divide that I enjoy for the game--too many games and litrpg books focus on only physical and mental imo.
I also liked the 'servant of a nearly-dead god' thing. That was pretty awesome. And the line about how uncomfortable he is, and his primitive anscestors and the uncaring sky was pretty fantastic as well (that wasn't the line lol).
Additionally, the use of trickery and brains to defeat people instead of just sword to the face was pretty fantastic.
In other areas: Fantastically written, with a few really good turns of phrase. One charatcer so far that's had significant screen time, and he is very enjoyable. Very good grammer.
Overall, and extremely strong recommend--and like I said, I preordered the novel--my money is where my mouth is. - WeebswebRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Anyone looking for a fresh - Fantasy, game setting, isekai-like story - should definitely pick this one up. Clever writing and an interesting MC. The fact that the MC has Loki vibes definitely gives the character bonus points. A story which gives the MC a personality is a definite thumbs up from me.
- solopathRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There are many stories on this sitewith heroes who pregress with strength of arm or with the power of their magic. Even more stories have been written that go the opposite direction, detailing the tales of innkeepers or farmers or craftsmen. It is the raretale that has a main character who advances through social interaction, whose abilities are not those of sword or spell but of saucy wit. Trickster's Song revolves around a wonderful rogue who does his best to think his way around problems, and it makes for a refreshing read.
The world of Trickster's Song is easy to fall into. Pulling heavily from Dungeons and Dragons lore and abilities allows the author to present a system that is familiar and easy to understand, for anyone who has ever played a tabletop campaign. While some details might be different, the combination of ability scores, skills, and spells or feats quickly sets an expectation of what the characters and their opposition are capable of. The races and monsters are seemingly pulled straight from a D&D beastiary, and what points the author loses in originality he more than makes up for in accessibility. It's far easier to visualize a fight between goblins and dwarves than it is to figure out how svarthalians would manage to repel a pack of flooznaks.
While there is still much more of this story to be written, twhat we have already seen of the characters is promising. The protagonists all have strong and weak points and solidly fleshed out identities. At times it feels like the characterization might be pushed a little too hard, leading to some abrupt tonal shifts, but it isn't a common occurrence.
The sotry moves quickly and easily, with a constant stream of encounters that allow for Robin to grow and power while progressing the plot. It's a story that I could easily see playing outoveran evening roleplaying session, with the game master carefully providing a variety of problems to the party that allow everyone a chance to use their unique abilitiesto sh - XxRottentotheCorexXRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5As far as I've read, the story is well put together, the main character progresses nicely and isn't too overpowered and uses his skills and cunning to his advantage to avoid head on fights. Very cool.
The MC is unique and the characters feel shaped; they have depth. The characters have a backstory that you don't know but you learn more about them as the MC does instead of info dumps that I've seen some other books do. Like how there are bits of their languages shown when they curse, or their array of humor in one of the quests Robin gets. There is foreshadowing and build up in the arcs wich is nice because you tell the story is planned.
The story feels and reads like a DND campaigns. But assumes that reader will know about terms of DnD like not describing the hafling character or really any other characteristics of the other characters that are introduced in the first arc the elf.
One problem tho- I stopped reading just to say this-- Marq? Really, Marq? Of all the names he could've chosen for an alter-ego he chose marq? That's such a downgrade. "mark". Why even have an alter-ego? Robin is a cool name-- better than MARQ. Maybe it's explained later, idk. Doesn't use quotation marks to indicate when characters are talking. - CurlyGreekRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I like it overall. Everyone who's here knows the genre pretty well, but you keeping it fresh. I like whole "rogue-ish" vibe with illusions and deceptions. If I had one suggestion that would be give him a knife or something. Maybe a tonfa or somesuch. If you need inspiration then google "copper-back Musso bowie". Anywho, I haven't seen last chapter yet, but please, if he is the only one with the "system" don't push a lot on "I need to hide it or I'll be tortured".
Overall, it's cool.
