- AaronRRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is unapologetically isekai – starts right out of the jump in a fairly traditional way, and then takes a fun right-turn. The power systems are a big part of what makes the story so fun – they seem simple, intuitive, and not overly OP based on what of the story is out so far.
The main character is a cypher, but the supporting cast is *above all else* fun. As someone who has read a lot of grimdark (and who writes a lot of it), this was a wonderful antidote. Not that it feels like there aren’t stakes, mind. The threats are real enough to add skin and blood in the game, it’s just that they aren’t amped up to an eleven. Which, for my current tastes, is amazing.
Combat is excellently written – smooth, concise, and fun. The chorography and pacing of the scenes is well-executed and the overall quality of the writing is likewise perfect for this style of story. A few other odd thoughts:
1: We don’t know if our MC will become a support class or a heroic archetype. Based on where we are so far, I’m very curious.
2: Cats versus dogs. Done well, and without the tongue-in-cheek, that might turn it from light to pure humor or satire. - ActionHero415Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall - This novel provides a totally refreshing view of LitRPG. The pace is fast, but fulfilling. Chapters are a perfect length. I love the characters and the class system. The skills are fun and I feel like the right amount of information is coming out about it as we go here. I also love the names of the skills. Like there isn't "poison" or "weapon smash" like other books where the MC gains skills and becomes OP. This book keeps the character grounded with simple easy but useful skills.
Story- fun and light this story rocks so far. It has amazing characters and a sense of doom without being too heavy handed. There is a real sense that the character is exploring as he goes.
Characters - The description of the MC speaks to me as well. As both someone who is a bit chunky and someone who has a cat that I call fat all the time, I love the vibe of the "fat human" that keeps getting crapped on by agile, sophisticated cat people. It's a fun touch that pulls you in to the story even more.
Style- 'm trying not to do spoilers lol but at this point this book has so much going on and we are only 8 chapters in. And not only that, but there are a ton of open ended questions and plot lines (not in a bad way) that the book has so much still to reveal!
Grammar- great few things but author takes care of it quickly.
Probably one of the most interesting and creative crafting books out there. Excited to see where this goes!
EDIT - I've now made it to chapter 23. As the novel goes on, I've been interacting with the author. He's interactive and takes feedback, and his writing has been improving with every chapter. The story is unlike anything I've seen before and has a ton of hidden gems. He's witty, sarcastic, and the characters are awesome. Excited to see this one finish! - Coldfang89Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Really enjoying it so far, I'm enjoying the internal thought processes and the dialogue, the system mechanics so far seem fairly interesting as well. I'm really looking forward to seeing more content come out.
The premise definitely sings to my soul, and has pulled me in to the story. Plus the title of the fiction itself? Pretty awesome. What can I say, sometimes you read something and you're pulled into a world that you enjoy escaping to. - CrazyMage555Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I liked this book a lot. Crafting, cat monsters, evil werewolves, what's not to love. His writing style is nice and concise and I liked the battles. The magic system is good too. As the author says he is going to return to earlier stages and add some stuff which I think is going to make it even better. Can't wait for the final copy to be released one day!
- Eric VanderlipRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The Whisper of Iron is the story of Noah, an engineering student from Earth who is transported to the planet Prixa and given the class of blacksmith.
Style: The perspective is consistent and smooth. The pace is solid and exciting. Dialogue feels natural. No complains.
Story: The narrative hits the ball running by dropping Noah in jungle surrounded by hostile wildlife right at the start. The soon discovered setting of humanoid dogs vs cats provides an intriguing backdrop, and the looming invasion drives the early chapters (I have resisted docking points for making the werewolves evil (I'm a dog person)). The underlying tension of humans being slaves to the feline Feka also helps keep things interesting. The world-building and litrpg system are well developed and slowly revealed at a satisfying rate.
Grammar: Excellent. My need to edit (for grammar reason) went mostly unfufilled.
Character: Noah makes sympathetic, down-to-earth protagonist. It's nice to see an overweight, out-of-shape lead for a change. The two main supporting characters, the giant cats Dee and Typh, have fleshed out personalities, and their interactions are a treat. The Shadowalkers and their alpha provide for threatening antagonists. Overall great cast.
Conclusion: I recommend The Whisper of Iron as fun, lighthearted romp in a unique fantasy world (especially if you are a cat person). The action, character development, and worldbuilding is extremely well balanced. You'll find yourself effortless flying through the story and clicking "next chapter". - SpattykinsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Whisper of iron is the story of Noah, a human who somehow found himself on a planet called Prixa. He is given a rpg-style class and quickly learns that he is likely the only human to ever be given such a thing. This revelation is dwarfed by the fact that he is instantly enslaved by the dominant race of Prixa, the feka.
Style:
Everything in this story is very clearly conveyed. While this is standard litrpg fare, the author respects that the reader knows the genre and doesn't dwell on every little hp and mana update, which keeps the story flowing nicely. One thing that differentiates this work from several others I've read is color-coding the stats in the text. This kind of visual cue makes the minutia of status updates go much more efficiently.
Grammar:
I noticed few to zero grammar or spelling mistakes. Everything is conveyed clearly and concisely.
Story:
The early stages of the story revolves around Noah trying to make sense of his new life and find allies wherever he can. His power to create things is fun to explore and useful to everyone around him. And when the werewolves are set to attack, it is clear that things are only going to get more interesting.
Character:
Noah is a bit of a blank slate character but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Most people can identify with being an overweight 20-something who's skills aren't being properly utilized. It's easy to put yourself into his situation and imagine you are like Noah and Noah is like you. The feka, however, are highly characterized. Even side characters are brimming with life, from the cowardly shadowwalkers to the prideful feka. - VibrantSolaceRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This book is a combo of magic and engineering, I'm a big fan of that mash of things, so I think this story could turn out amazing! The story has much to enjoy, including litrpg elements for anyone who enjoys that, and some ingenuity for those who don't care much for others.
- chugs25Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love the book all of the little intricacies in there about how to obtain different kinds of mana and the world building and character building is phenomenal I feel an attachment to some of the characters in the book I'm hoping it will be atleast 5 books I feel like there's a whole world out there that we still havnt begun to see.
- keeganashleyliveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's so fun. Honestly. This story is just a blast, right from the beginning. The world is ingenious, while, also, being a little comical at times. It's the right mix of action and grime and good-time. The mining spin and the cats and dogs...the story and setting are fantastical in the best sense of the word.
I'd love to highlight that the world-building is excellent. The author does a fabulous job of not only creating this well-thought-out and dynamic world, but, also, bringing it to life.
When I thought about it (and I really did stop and think about it for a long minute there), I didn't feel the need to deduct points anywhere. I really am enjoying everything about it. The writing style is easy-to-read and straight-forward. The characters are likable (and hatable, when called for - the Villian is a doozy) and I didn't see any glaring grammar issues. I found myself buzzing right through the pages and jumping directly into the next chapter as I finished the one before... It's really an enjoyable ride, and there is plenty of it up to enjoy!
If you're looking for an epic world to get lost in, I'd recommend this one. - skeptruneRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall: This is a great take on LitRPG. "Human comes into world a slave" isn't new, but the ruling cats angle is fantastic. Also, an MC who's a crafter with some fighting skill is one of my favorite tropes, so I'm giving this bonus points for that. Definitely give this read if you're thinking about it!
Style: I have no complaints and I can rave about the sarcasm and descriptions. One of the best stories I've come across regarding the balance between being descriptive and verbose. There's ample detail, but not so much that I get the urge to skim. Also, the dialogue feels realistic with tons of sarcasm and colloquial quips.
Story: It's in the crafter with a bit of fighting skill trope which I love. Additionally, there's solid plot without much filler and a decently well thought out system. My gripes center around there not being enough training and engineering going into the big moments. I really like it when there are frequently prep into application scenarios, and this story misses that to an extent. Also, the system seems to give out skills a bit too freely for my taste.
Character: The MC is far from a Gary Stu with relatable qualities and a unique personality. Additionally, the other characters all have their unique quirks and are identifiable by dialogue and actions alone. I also feel like there's a good amount of characters. I hope the author doesn't expand the cast too rapidly. My only gripe is not enough training going into the progression of the various characters.
Grammar: Pretty much flawless. Nothing negative to talk about here.
