Description

Willow 'The Phoenix' Gagné knows hardship and victory, and she's ready to know victory again. After taking an injury while competing for a U.S. Olympic team five years ago, she's back. Not as a gymnast this time, but as a fighter competing in the world's first Olympic MMA competition. Moments from a resounding victory in the world's largest arena, seconds from the completion of a tale of failure and rebirth through dedication and struggle - Willow's view fades to darkness. The darkness is broken moments later by strokes of red resolving to letters written slowly across her view, "You died." While still taking in the unexpected message, her eyes are assaulted by light as a semi-transparent neon blue box explodes into view. New lines pop dramatically into the box, the first line in an eye-searing green  "START", the following in shifting shades of purple, "Replay Tutorial", and a small sub-text, "Run Stats". As it turns out, death is very much not the end. Not for her. Not for anyone. Life on Earth is nothing more than a tutorial, an introduction to the very basics. The real competition begins now; and Willow is ready to start the next round. Volume 1 Complete! Winmer of the Royal Road Writathon challenge 2024 & 2025! Super fun read so far!! Willow is SO charming and her interactions with others feel real. The magic/litRPG mechanic is fun and unique, and unfortunately hits wayy too close to home when it forces characters to "pay per module" 😭. Can't wait to read more and see what other kinds of magic/mana aspects everyone has. (Posted at Chapter 6)
**Adding this update as I've finished book 1. I need Madrick to be my dad and Willow to be my mom. 10000/10 stars. That's all.

An interesting mix of systems, and power rankings.
What really makes it shine is the main character and the show more than tell characterization.
This is a very character driven story with hints at a possible future plot.
It has a blend of tropes from cultivation, korean manwha, and western litrpg. The author tends to play tropes straight but blend them for payoff.

Our protagonist is a legend, but even legends die. And once people die, they leave the tutorial and end up in "the real world". Unfortunately "the real World" is controlled by megacorps/factions that practically enslave new arrivals. Our legendary protagonist escapes that fate, but not without attracting the attention of a capricious patron who tosses her and some fellow sufferers right into adventure.
The big advantage of the story is the setting. The magic is new, the afterlife is challenging and the world is rather crapsack but not hopeless. Basically our protags have some challenges.
The main issue is in the development of the story. The protag only really finds her goal in the third book, before that she gets tossed around by the whims of fate/her mentor. The pacing could be better, especially the second book drags out a lot. I'd recommend to try and combine slice of life and story progress better and maybe skip scenes that don't add anything essential to the story.
I rather like the characters of the story. While the main protag seems overly bubbly and childish for a top tier athlete sometimes, I rather like how diverse the crew is in attitudes and mentalities.

    Interesting world, characters and story.
A world in the future with magic. But still retains the classic corporate shenanigans that led the main character into her predicament.
Characters are developed, they were well thought out.
And the story, as far as I read. Was decent.
Unfortunately, not my cup of tea.
