- Ria CorvidivaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I admit that I started this story with hesitation. A story of two women finding each other, their fates becoming intertwined with politics and powers beyond the mortal ken. This sounds like the making of a story that I'm going to really like, but I am always concerned that the hinted-at romance isn't going to materialize. However, I can report with great confidence that the author understands the assignment and gives us the sapphic content this reader so desperately craves. (Those who don't fancy a sapphic / yuri / GL story are therefore advised to search elsewhere.)
The two protagonists are both nobles by blood, but their backstories could not be more different aside from that story. Audrey is the discarded, disgraced elder daughter of the nefarious Duke Rose, forced into living in a closet and as a servant (or slave, more or less) by her evil Stepmother, a la Cinderella. And Lydia is her tomboyish Princess Charming, eager to prove herself capable in a classic Medieval or early modern Fantasy World where women aren't seen as being as capable of leadership or authority as men.
This provides a natural and well-developed character arc for both, Audrey gaining confidence as she harnesses her magical talents while Lydia learns to lower her defenses and rely on her new lady-in-waiting and eventual girlfriend and partner. It's a classic tale repeated many times, but it's classic because it stands the test of time.
And it's well done; chapters are beefy, side-characters are likable (except when they're designed to be hateable). Grammar is decent, with a modest number of word choice and punctuation errors that don't heavily detract from readability. Some of the early chapters don't have good paragraph spacing, which is cause to lose half a point on the 'style' subscore, but this is fixed by chapter 5 (thankfully).
And, uh, yeah. Challenges are brewing for our lovable lovers as of the part of the story when I'm writing this review, but I'm hopeful that our couple w - bsrtrussRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Though this isn't a typical genre for myself, I have to say the story pulled me in almost instantly. The style and voice changes happen at just the right pace and the character development is perfect, building over the course of the story and giving each character a solid foundation that an arc could exist for almost any of them, even the 2 main instructors.
There are not many Grammer issues and they become even more scarce over time. I still gave 5 stars, because this a 100,000 plus word story. It is nearly impossible to avoid some mistakes. The mistakes that do exist are not glaring nor do they detract from the story itself.
It would be interesting to re- read should the author ever choose to re-write the first few chapters. Ot was clear they were still finding their complete style but what they had was enough to hold the interest. They found their stride pretty quickly though and the story sprang even more to life. I found myself playing out the scenes in my head as i read and pondering the what ifs. The inate talent for storytelling is clearly there and gets better and better.
Keep up the good work! Looking forward to more! - Ditto1234859173Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall I really enjoy the story. The characters are well written being lighthearted and serious when needed and little to no grammar mistakes that I've caught. However, the one issue I have is that it's sometimes hard to figure out whose POV it currently is. As a suggestion to the author, I would put whose POV the reader is currently reading to clear up some confusion. The confusion could just be on my part though
- NightbulbRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I intend to come edit this review later when I'm caught up, but I want to get my early thoughts down first.
This story is very fun so far! The protagonists stumble quickly into that special flavor of love-at-first-sight you can only really get from a clumsy teenager romance, and that's exactly what I was in the mood for when I picked it up- the story I was just reading was far too slow-burn for me at the moment. And I find the non-romantic setup very promising, I'm excited to see Audrey turn into a character that deserves to have the word "blade" in her title!
But this is Kithara's first fiction, and... I'm sorry to start my review with a criticism, but I have to acknowledge that it shows. I think it has the potential to blossom into an easy 5-star story if some chapters get rewrites, though, after Kithara gets some more experience! Because the flaws I've noticed are all very specific, and I don't think they'd be too hard to isolate and correct for the more experienced author Future Kithara will be. I'm interested to see if she already has become that author by the time I catch up to the more recent chapters.
Most of my criticism comes down to the fact that many aspects of the story currently feel rushed. The worldbuilding around the relationship the gods have with humans is unique, but thrown at us a bit too fast, with the prologue featuring a goddess, her domain, the concept of divine guardians, the way thay Audrey's unique circumstances let Aurora interact with her with a very very rare level of directness, and the fact that Aurora is eager to do away with divine formality.
That's a lot to cram into a few paragraphs, and as much as Aurora is very kind to give Audrey all that intel up front instead of drawing everything out, I do think that drawing it out over several meetings- and waiting to hear less divinely-connected side characters talk about the normal relationship humans have with faith and divinity in this setting- would have been more healthy for the narr - RielleRoyal Road★★★ 3.0I have somewhat mixed feelings about this novel.
You know all those countless third-rate slise_of_life/romcom anime and light novels about magical academies in medieval fantasy? Well, this is exactly that. Novel features just about everything you’d expect from the genre — a magically gifted heroine, duels, tournaments, a student council, assassins, dances, shopping, and so on. Sadly, the author fails to bring anything new or unique to the genre; everything here feels like a mix of scenes from other series you’ve probably already seen a dozen times.
The only thing that makes this story stand out - very sweet and cute yuri romance — and not slow burn at all. Well, it also has fluff, found family, fluff, cute personal goddeses who you will befriend, fluff, cuteness overdose, cute frinds, cute maids, cute knights, FLUFF!!!
But that’s about it. If you’re expecting anything more, I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed.
If you’re looking for good worldbuilding — no, the world is utterly unbeliavable and empty, and the author doesn’t even seem to care about fixing that. I'm on chapter 25 (thats more then 100 000 words), and I literally know nothing about that world except 3 or 4 random facts.
If you want engaging magic or action — again, no. Magic works simply because it does - feel mana, imagine fireball, and thats all. Oh, and if you MC, then try really hard and you will be able to use some OP cheats. And yeah, the fact that anyone can learn magic has zero impact on the world around.
If you expect well-developed characters — you won’t find them here. There are only nice, kind friends and evil, nasty enemies (well, there actually were no real antagonists so far - I cant really give that title to random stupid assasin who dont uderstand what means word assasin at all). I can remeber only 2 side characters that have more than 1 dimesion in them (among dozens).
And if you’re hoping for an interesting main heroine — she’s the biggest disappointment of all. She had ten years of abu
