Description

[The evil, conniving and secretive crow goddess chose me to become her champion-husband, so that I can protect her from the powerful, justice-loving warrior lion god, but I'm actually a very kind person and she’s kind of an awkward, weird-smelling, conspiracy-theorist and now I've fallen into a life of crime because of it!]

What happens when a hopelessly lost, yet unwaveringly kind soul is surprisingly chosen by a hated, evil goddess in order to become both her champion and husband?

In a densely magical era, the gods themselves live in the world’s cities together with the ilk of mortal people — whether humans, fairies, elves, or any other races that lie in between. Great temples, schools, and industries to hundreds of different deities are maintained by their many followers as the countless faiths compete for power by gaining more worshipers through whatever means necessary. Adventuring deep into the hearts of dungeons, slaying dangerous and rare monsters, creating wondrous guilds, or crafting incredible things in honor of their patrons — no task is too much to ask for those people in service of the divine.

This great competition has brought about an age of prosperity and wealth to the world as the gods fight to out-compete each other in the race for followers.

— For most.

Others, however, who do not fall into the favoring eyes of any gods who would want them, for lack of power, talent, or social standing, find themselves abandoned by both Heaven and their fellow citizens.

One such unwanted wretch, the young, runty, mouse-human half-breed Majiko — a destitute orphaned survivor of the destroyed city of Souzerain — suddenly finds himself caught up in a chaotic situation five years after his traumatic past. Despite being rejected from every house and temple of the gods in the new city, he is taken by surprise to become the husband of the secretive, reviled crow goddess with one wing and one eye. However, she is the very same wanted person who has been accused of the heinous crime of destroying his home and killing his family.

But perhaps there is more to the situation than it first appears?

Denying responsibility and claiming that the two of them are now bound in a conspiracy four layers deep, she awakens Majiko to a secret world that has been around him all of his life. Strange happenings abruptly set in motion all around them, and he fights to understand the real nature of the grand conspiracy that he apparently has always unknowingly been in the very center of.

Taking on the mantle of the weakened goddess‘ protector, it is up to Majiko — marked for death — to not only care for the broken deity but also to find out what really happened to both of them five years ago, even if that means forsaking his sense of honor and justice along the way.

Can a kicked and beaten lowlife from the streets rise up to stand in the halls of champions amongst the greatest in the world, or will both he and his mischievous, strange wife-creature be crushed underfoot like vermin before they can reveal the truth? Is the strange crow really as innocent as she claims, or is this all another ruse in order for her to slip through the grasp of justice once more?

If i've said it once, i've said it a million times - Weaponsmith is by far my fave of Razzes stories. And so far, this seems to scratch the same itch! Highly looking forward to the chapters (Also, read Weaponsmith, trust this kindly reviewer, you won't regret it, or maybe you will? I'm not psychic.)

Only reason I'm not rating it a 5 is because I try to be impartial enough to recognize it won't be evereyones cup of tea, however much it is my personal perfect cup of tea aside. I reccomend giving it a try no matter what though, since even if you don't expect to like it, you'll pick up pretty fast weather or not you're into it.

Got me thoroughly hooked in Chapter 3, so I was very disappointed to reach the end.
It's nice to find a story with a plot more complex than "numbers go up" or "the big bad guy is a bad guy". And the relationship between the mouse and the crow turns out to be rather sweet, and I do hope they end up happy together.
It might possibly be a relationship that requires an audience who have been through more than just student level dating to be able to relate to.
