Damien Nightshade - The Villainous Vampire (OLD VERSION)
Community Rating
Description
Vampires are creatures of the night that fulfill their desires from dusk till dawn. Inhabiting the dark caves of the Kazimir mountains, the other races mostly disregard the unintelligent bloodthirsty creatures.
Damien Nightshade, third in line to the vampire throne, a descendant of an S-rank existence, is ostracized by his siblings and forced to leave the comfort of the caves. How will this germophobic, lazy, bloodthirsty vampire fit within the human realm?
This is Damien's dilemma as he awakens in a vampire’s body inside a familiar room, one belonging to a villain in the popular VR game "Throne and Awakening".
Damien considers himself a veteran of the game; he knew the game's storyline better than anyone with five years of experience and thousands of hours. Yet the internet wouldn't agree with him. A true veteran had to complete the game as the character "Damien Nightshade", the vampire prince hated by all living existences.
With the game world becoming reality and with knowledge of the storyline. Damien must venture out to avoid the many death flags looming over his head and seize every opportunity awaiting him.
But first, maybe he should deal with his maid, who silently plots his murder while he sleeps.
This tale is set in a magical world with a heavy emphasis on kingdom building, twisted nobles, and gruelling politics with sprinkles of magic, mystery, and the occasional action scene.Throne and Awakeningis a world packed with danger around every corner. Join Damien as he attempts to navigate this terrifying world with the knowledge he should not possess and atypical powers that have no business belonging to a Vampire.

- SmolBrainPlatinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0One of the few vampire stories out there! Give it a try as it's quite promising so far and I binged it in like 1 day.
I. Style Score 4.5/5
Another Isekai(Transported to another world) story. But this time the MC gets transported into the game that he has been playing for the past few years and gets reincarnated as a vampire, the enemy of mankind, no less!
With his accumulated epic gamer knowledge on his side he tries to survive in this god forsaken world.
The premise is rather common but the author put some twists here and there and turns it into a fun and thrilling read. The world building only enhances the story and its characters and make the world seem more alive.
II. Story Score 5/5
The story so far has been a rollercoaster ride and I still don't know what the author has planned for the future. XKARNATION has several overarching plot points intertwining with each other with Damien in the middle of it who is just trying to survive.
It sometimes feels like the author has too many ideas on his mind and sometimes struggles to implement them into his story.
III. Grammar Score 5/5
I'm a spelling nazi and absolutely cannot stand SPELLING MISTAKES.
I can sometimes find mistakes here and there in the more recent chapters but they get fixed rather quickly which is awesome.
Grammar and punctuation are good and I haven't had any problems understanding anything so far.
IV. Character Score 5/5
Damien is a ferocious vampire but he is of the british breed so he is a posh one.
Damien is a ruthless, cold blooded murderer who doesn't have any morals and will resort to any method to achieve his dream. What I really like about Damien is that he has grown a lot and received a lot of character development.
He went from being a weak human with an inferiority complex to a prideful apex predator. The vampire is slowly taking over Damien as he loses his humanity...
The side characters receive a decent amount of screen time as well which is nice to see. We get some more insight with POV ch - ZombieManThatchRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Amazing story with great character development. I started reading this on yonder and it was so good I had to find where I could read more which brought me to this wonderful site. I absolutely love XKARNATIONs writing style and the stories that are told through it.
The protagonist starts out weak but through innovative skill usage and hard work he becomes powerful. I can't wait for more chapters of this to come out! - YolomasterU83Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Writing this from my phone so excuse mistakes. I read this story over on Webnovel but felt I should come here and leave a review for the RoyalRoad folks as this is some seriously good storytelling that needs more exposure!
I have read many stories of this side villain genre, although this isn't the greatest out there it's certainly good enough.
The plot is solid and consistent with the MC (A vampire prince) constantly on the run from external threats. The story does a good job at keeping the MC on his toes, as there's death around every corner.
The story began strong, trailed off slightly on the middle but has vastly improved in recent chapters with the author making an effort to go back and fix the old chaps.
There are few writing mistakes throughout this tale with a consistent 3rd person style accompanied by the occasional POV change chapter that gives a perspective on events from another characters perspective. This helps to flesh out the world and are actually some of my favourite chapters!
The stories certainly not perfect... but enjoyable enough for me to give it 5 stars.

Grammar (5✯)
There were very minor mistakes throughout my binge-reading session (which I pointed out in some comments), but they were just minor typos. They happen. Anyone who writes can confirm this.
From my experience, the author quickly responds and fixes these mistakes, so I didn't feel the need to take any points off of my rating.
Also, from what I've gathered from reading other readers' comments, it seems the grammar was much worse in the earlier days of this fiction? But it's great now, which is proof of the author's growth.
Style (5✯)
Hm. I can't really make a lot of comments on this, since I don't have the technical knowledge to critique xKarnation's style.
I didn't really notice a lot of adverbs (y'know, those -ly things that some people seem to hate so much?) nor did notice too much telling and not enough showing.
As a reader though? It works.
I don't have any particular problems knowing who's saying what. My eyes don't wander in the middle of reading a huge block of text. Because there are none.
There are some chapters that are expositionary in nature, but I don't really mind those. And I don't think a novel can avoid those altogether anyway.
It's pretty easy to read and binge (although it still took me a lot of time since I could only read after coming home from work...).
I failed to find anything that stood out in a bad way, so here's a five star.
Story (4.5✯)
Ohhh-kay. Where do I begin...
First off, the LitRPG system. I actually like it.
I like stats, but I don't like it when I'm just looking at a wall of numbers. That sucks to read. I'll probably forget them all after a single paragraph too.
It also brings back nightmares of calculus and trigonometry classes that I failed when I still went to school.
Here, the stats are just what stage your abilities are, which is nice. Me like letters.
However, I do have some qualms with the system itself. I won't say too much since the author also knows what I'm talkin - MD-ReaperRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I absolutely love this story. It's such a new take on vampires and magic. If not for the chapter release delay i wouldn't have slept for 3 days haha. Just absolutely incredible writing and story telling. Following the MC on his journey and not noticing the subtle changes from human to vampire until the MC notices it himself.. that just shows how the story was just epicly entrancing.
- unlimitedpowerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This novel is great. The world seems intriguing and has plenty of development coming it's way as it looks like currently. The main character is fun to follow and I also really enjoy that each of the side characters is done justice and given plenty of time. The plot itself is not that far yet but it shows a lot of promise and I'm looking forward to how it continues. This work is probably a 4 1/2 but to balance the negative ratings (which it really doesn't deserve) it's getting a 5 star.
- MarcogrecRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Normally i don't like vampire storys but these time i'm in love give it a try you will not be disappointed i hope the author will finish the story as most of rr fictions never end and these story so far did not make me sleep last night as I keept on reading
- Orangewave SupremeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I really enjoy this story personally. I've read XKARNATION's older work and this is a massive improvement. This story manages to have an in depth lore without also info dumping which is impressive as most stories on this site don't manage to do that. It's grammar doesn't leave me constantly correcting sentences in my head and the story keeps me hooked and consistently interested. Overall this story goes above and beyond the usual standards.
- Moonsiren10Royal Road★★★★ 4.0Really like the premise and direction of the story and look forward to see how powerful Damien gets. Think his power ups tend to be a bit fast and sudden and I feel like he should use his knowledge of the game more but other then that no complaints
- alphaReviewsRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Personally I thought the beginning was very unappealing, in that the MC starts off by severely mistreating the girl slave he begins his new life with.
I guess I just appreciate anti-heros who are less self-destructive and more productive / less dependent on future plot armor: even if you see people as nothing more than cattle, there generally is no benefit for a farmer in mistreating his cattle before slaughter, as being kind to your flock makes manipulating them so much easier... (But people who are emotionally angry and wanting to lash out want to lash out, no matter the cost - yet the MC backstory doesn't explain the cause of his rage, which is lame)
So the start was a big turn off for me and I was expecting to not be able to stomach much more of the story, but later the MC becomes more reasonable by not being so grossly abusive with his slaves, so that was nice. I think the author missed his chances in the story to play more on how the human-minded MC might have been struggling with his vampire physiology's impulses / emotions, and how to master them.
Frankly, a lot of this story is very generic, especially regarding to the psychological. So side characters will act for the plot rather than due to natural agency / psychology / reason, and will tend to be black and white and incoherent.
But hey, it's still actually surprisingly fun to read, at least up 'till now. The powers and fights have mostly been fun, the challenges the MC is faced with are significant, but at the same time the MC is still being successful in generally satisfying ways.
I mentioned in another of my reviews how anti-hero stories tend to massively fail once the MC gets free from external threat. This story does a very good job of building up a scenario that keeps the MC in survival mode for years to come.
I think it is the sense of agency the MC has in the face of this adversity that is particularly well done in this story, and which makes me really look forward to each chapter released.
