Love the noir feel of this. Great portrayal of corrupt USA politicians. Plus, dirty cops, meth runners, and X-Men style avengers for hire.
The way the Black Balsam crew uses birds' scientific names is awesome. "Cathartes" is my favorite.
Lots of neat details and language that give this a cool old-school drama feel. Learned what a "columbarium" is and "balm of Gilead" too. Never knew what the pharma company Gilead was named after...
For me, biggest strengths of Black Balsam are 1) gritty psychological drama, 2) grimy future-USA backdrop and 3) unique flavorful additions like the bird names.
The names of the Astra abilities are great too. They feel very classically informed, especially Lyre of Lethe.
Also, the more I think about it, the more Black Balsam reminds me of reading Antigone in high school, but in a good way. I feel like a lot of classic tragedy plot lines are inbound. Hell, the perils of revenge are right there in the title.
