Description
For some wizards, Intelligence is just a dump stat. Joseph Sullivan is at an all-time low. He lost his job, his fiancée dumped him, he moved back to the Midwest and currently lives in his parent’s basement—oh, and his workout was just interrupted with the arrival of the System. Earth has become a playing field in a contest amongst the gods, where mortals are the pawns. The winning god gets the glory, and their chosen champion gets a single wish. The first stage of this game: Tutorial – Class Selection. Provided the ideal stat array for a physical, combat-focused class, the choice for Joe is obvious. Until he fat thumbs the selection screen and ends up selecting Spellcaster. His starting Intelligence stat? 1. With a useless class selection and only his raw testosterone-fueled strength to back him up, Joe decides class optimization is for dummies. Pumping all stat points in Strength, he hopes to not only survive the contest of the gods, but to win the whole damned thing. After all, a real wizard should be measured by how much they can bench! . . . . . . . . . . What to expect: - A slower-paced beginning - A System Integration story that will shift into a System Apocalypse story - GameLit / LitRPG elements weaved into detailed character arcs - Party dynamics . . . . . . . . . . - 4artthouRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Fun, Funny, and Clever. One of the more interesting takes on a grunt level view of the social effects of System implementation on the ground level. I appreciate that the main character ends up have relatively normal human reactions to the trauma he gets shoved into. The author manages to balance a slow burn character growth within a fast paced story beats and some excellent cliff hangers. This early in the story I do find myself curious to know more about the rest of Joe’s party and family and am excited to see more of them going forward. So far my only issue is the POV switches have felt a touch jarring and too short. I’d say so far I don’t feel like any of them have been long enough or convey different enough information to feel like they couldn’t be told as is from Joe’s point of view. I’d love to see either chapter love POV switches or or POVs that convey a wildly different perspective that Joes.As a personal aside, the non-human side character have completely stolen the show for me and I would 100% read spinoffs for Jelly Boy, the skeleton accountant, and the Naked Sasquatch.
- Blessed beingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love the story. I really like the sense of humor in this book. I litteral laugh out loud allot. Aswell find myself stupidily smiling. I like how the author brings real places into the story. I grew up in Cleveland and it adds to the over vaule and humor. Characters are great. Jelly boy is the mvp. And I'm just happy the author brought this story into existence give me a little something to look forward to.
- Arcane InstigatorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's quite enjoyable and author delivers on promises.
Authors carefully puts setup's and payoffs.
Small issues with pacing and clarity at earlier chapters, only with spacial clarity at leather chapters.
8/10 where 10 is Lord of Mysteries.
Would have rated 4.5 at early chapters, but it gets better and is quite consistent - ColbsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’ve been really enjoying the book so far, the dialog feels natural and the author does a great job of making the main characters actions make sense and not feel arbitrary.Strength based wizard manages to avoid the “and then” pit fall unlike some of the other stories on here.
- DWinchesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Come for the cover but stay for the writing.
I liked this story. I wouldn't call the ideas new or groundbreaking (mostly). They are well executed, and familiar in the right sort of way.
More importantly, the author has an excellent voice, and that's important. What else can I say? It's fun. Give it a shot. - Dante InfernoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Absolutely love this. Binged it all in 2 days, and can’t wait to read more. Started a bit slow at first but now it’s so much more interesting than I would had imagined. Also, Jelly Boy is the absolute star of this, he had my vote at Real Housewives hah!
- ErebosthedarkRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An easy five stars. Come here if you are looking for excellent writing, realistic characterization of the human reaction to traumatic events, a struggle against overwhelming obstacles both external and internal, and to watch my boy Joe crush. some. skulls. With his brain. But also his muscles.Highly recommend. No bullshit OP powers, no limitless encyclopedic knowledge, no inexplicable universal competence. Just a guy doing his best with the cards dealt him, one lift at a time.
- BloodartistRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Basically you get gains from reading every chapter, I don’t think any other justification is needed… But if you’re still not convinced look forward to whimsical but realistic character progression with an emphasis on atypical class/ archetypes. Main character embodies the positive aspects of gym culture in a refreshing way that makes me look forward to seeing how he overcomes system limitations to be a unique protagonist for our protein fueled shenanigans!
- FicklestillRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I picked this story up on a whim and pulled an all-nighter to finish it.Style: Something I don't read very often in this genre; the author's descriptions of one-off and side characters put me into the world and make everything feel natural. The scene descriptions are all very kinetic in a way that I enjoy.Story: Pretty standard LitRPG fare, but i appreciate the restraint shown in not having the world go to shit mere days after the systems arrival. The inciting event for the MCs adventurer career was a fun touch.Grammar: Nice, at least by the time I started reading. I only caught one, maybe two mistakes in syntax, but that was it. It may have been intentional.Characters: Amazing. Joe is down to earth and reacts in a familiar, and quite human way to many of the situations he is placed in. The supporting cast are - so far - really great with distinct personalities and pasts that are getting fleshed out a bit more as the story goes on.Solid, stupid fun. And like Joe, not actually dumb at all. That was a worry of mine. Like I saw a muscle wizard, and sometimes Authors play that like they're too dumb to cast spells normally, that doesn't happen here. Joe is a cool, normalish guy with an uncommon build. I like it.
- Ginger ninjaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a great story first getting its footing. Each chapter get better. A good balance of tropes and original ideas, with the story feeling fresh and new while still fitting into the genre. The main character is fun and relatable. Neither the common overpowered main character trope nor the crazy week in the beginning. He is aggressively mediocre at first both in mindset and talent. This at first threw me off a bit but once I got used to it, it felt very refreshing and relatable. The main character is also not the typical RPG mega nerd becomes demigod via system, but a gym bro, but still being a closeted nerd. Personally I found that very relatable as it’s close to my own life. The response to the introduction of the system was also very relatable and to be honest refreshing. Story has advanced in fits and starts but is overall compelling so far. The hard thing is that there has only been a hand full of chapters so far but each one has been completing individually yet also add to the story as a whole. the main character, and the story as a whole is very funny and fun. My only negative comment about it is that the chapters are on the smaller side, and that there is not yet enough support for the author to write full time.
The playlist to listen to as you read is also an awesome touch.
