Description

Sectum Irongut has lived most of his life on the sea of the backwater planet of Tefira. The Elves set the entire planet aside for their less desirable elements, which has created a world of danger with no chance of escape. So far he's lived a fairly exciting life, but all of that is threatened when his adoptive father, the Dwarf smuggler Garm Irongut, decides to help a captive princess run from the Elves. In a world where danger is around every corner, they've dove head first into middle of a storm.

It's not often that a book sucks me in and I binge the whole thing without realizing how much time has passed. This one was flowing so well that I seriously didn't realize how much time had gone by before I was at the end.
Basically, it’s the story of a dude that has adventures on a smuggler ship and gets the biggest one of his life when they have to smuggle a princess out of the kingdom that’s holding her hostage. Along the way he battles with Elves, Pirates, and even an anthropomorphic Manticore. It does end the way I thought it would (no, I did not see the twists coming), if for no other reason than most stories usually end with the good guys winning, but those last ten chapters were wild.
Not gonna lie, I teared up three times. How do you do that to the MC??? I guess it falls into spoiler territory, so I’ll try to be vague, but I thought one of the rules of first person was that you never do THAT!! Seriously did not expect that ending. And the epilogue??? Really? Why is that guy still around? The ONE person I was rooting to die through most of the book and he’s still alive.
The main supporting characters in this book really help the story flow along and the minor characters provide a LOT of diversity. Seriously, I NEED a book about Talia (Why were her snakes cut off???) and Krav (A skeleton mage that works for a Mermaid queen. Like, how did that happen?). Even one about Garm or the rest of the crew could be fun. A WereCrocodile, water-based Kobold, snakeman, anthropomorphic Griffon, Cyclops, Ogre (would not eat his food, I don't care if he is the ship's cook), Goblin, and a penguiman on a boat together? That sounds like a series just collecting everyone.
I did manage to find 3 typos, so I dinged the grammar score, but otherwise, solid story and can't wait for the next one! Definitely going to check out Camadt's other books in the meantime.

Pirates and vampires and manticores oh my! This was a fun read full of fantastic pirate antics. You follow a crew who resembles more of a found family group who revel in each others differences, following a captain who you learn is more honorable of a man than you would expect from a pirate captain. The protagonist Sectum is the adopted son of said captain. Sectum, from whose point of view this story is told, is a flawed but fun character. He gave me some frustration in the last ten chapters, and he is the only reason why I gave the character score four stars instead of five, but the resolution of his antics to the story handles it in stride. His brother was a hilarious character to read and reread, and the situations with the manticore and vampire were fun scenes that I also reread a few times just for the sake of pure entertainment. Following them in the story, you usually focus on Sectum plus at least one other person. It was quite fun seeing all the magical races, some of which are sentient or anthropomorphized animals, was a blast. I am looking forward to more of this story from the author!

Well, I have to say, the first volume/book of Sineater was indeed a rollercoaster of not only its twists and turns, but also the amount of variability in the species that were introduced!
The Elves, Vampires, Camadts, Griffins, Manticores, Lamias, it just didn't seem to end! What I loved most about the story was just how the author sprinkled tidbits of information for almost each race throughout the chapters without making it feel "in your face" about it, great job on that!
Speaking of the chapters, the chapters themselves were also bite sized, something I personally liked due to how I read, and I'm pretty sure there are alot of other readers who agree with me. Long chapters just unfortunately lose my attention more times than not. The smaller chapters here though helped keeping me engaged.
However, the MAIN thing that kept me excited to go to the next chapter was both the world building and plot twists that occurred! The author clearly has a vision and has done ALOT of thinking, which is pretty impressive, especially considering there are seemingly other kingdoms, countries, even planets for the main cast to explore!
All in all, I really do have to recommend this story if you like a Found Family type of story with numerous different mythical creatures in a well thought out setting!

So at first i was a little confused at what the story was about, but a few chapters later and i was sucked into the dialogue and emotions the characters were expressing! And then came the great tale of a smuggler helping a princess escape?! Not to mention the manticore! It is quite literally a drama fantasy novel in every way. Ive loved the story so far and will probably read until the end of the story. Plus the manticore was awesome, loved that.
