Alex was dying, and all the millions his father had left him meant nothing.
The life he had been so eager to embrace, to do the memory of his father proud, would soon come to an end.
Cancer.
That ugly, terrible word.
He had tried to be strong for his mother, even when the treatments left him violently ill, his body wracked with pain, his friends and even his girlfriend leaving him almost as fast as his once impressive physique wasted to nothing under the ravages of his illness.
And just when he thought all hope was dead, a couple discrete referals placed by high-powered friends of his family got him an exclusive spot at the most sophisticated cryonic facility in the world.
He didn't know if there was such a thing as an afterlife, but part of the package included uploading a copy of his cortex into a digital universe filled countless worlds to explore, where he could embrace whatever class or profession he could dream of.
All of which sounded hell of a lot better than the miserable death waiting for him in the real world.
In the end, he signed the paperwork, putting his pathetic flickering life in the hands of potential quacks and charlatans.
After all, with death just days away, what did he have to lose?
Even if he could never be successfully revived, he could at least adventure his heart out.
(Authors Note: Books 1-6 are now live on Amazon andhere is a linkif you wanted to check it out! And I will continue to post chapters to Book 7 here first, until that tale is told! I hope you enjoy! - pinzigRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0MH Johnson is a talented author who tells fun adventure stories where periodically things will escalate WELL over 9000....
His stories are colorful, violent, virtuous and villainous.
His previous works can be found on Amazon, cheaply if you have Prime/KU, if you like the taste of what you read here and want more flavorful goodness that's already complete, his Risen Queen series was first -- and it's a wonderful read.
Then came his Oblivions Blade novels -- dimension warping LitRPG.
As for this particular story, this review is somewhat of a placeholder. I like what I've seen in 2 chapters... but that's only two chapters so far. This story is kicking off in a LitRPG/Wuxia realm, and really, with as colorful, vibrant, and over the top as some of his previous works have gone -- Wuxia seems like a natural progression for his works to dip into.
In any case, I've read all this author's previous works, they are good. This looks to be good as well. - BloodiejudgeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I personally love this series, I find the storyline interesting I love the growth of Alex, the world building is great. I love when Alex has a bit of power taken away. It all within the theme of baptism by fire he always come out a tad stronger. So thank you. I may read ahead here but I always purchase the book amazon, so thank you and please keep writing.
- MysterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A beautifully written Xania/Cultivation, filled with an enticing plot and a badass MC. I think my only possible criticisms are that the cast of support characters makes each book feel episodic instead of cohesive. I always look forward to every chapter, and reading them is arguably one of the most entertaining half hours of my week.
- RobertdnwyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0First thing is MH Johnson is a fantastic writer I loved the descriptiveness and pace not to mention the rpg elements have you pausing just a moment at the end of the chapter just to sort through the possibilities and once you get into it it doesn't go over your head and you find yourself eager to turn the page
100% Awesome Book - b00kw0rm87Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Other than occasional grammar errors, I truly think this series is one of the more fun books to read. I've always been a gamer and fantasy book reader, yet somehow never had read any LitRPGs. This is my first series and I couldn't be happier with the choice. I know it's a good series when I find myself reading instead of working due to wanting to know what's next. MC has his flaws as does the story, but I dont read books to get character growth or a carefully written plot. I read to lose myself in a world and this series has that. Keep the chapters coming!
- AuthormitosRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5One of the better cultivation novels available, with some early growing pains as it figured out what it was. It's always had great bones, but as a series, it's recently matured, and most of the old criticisms are no longer valid. It's always a struggle to climb and just be for Alex and company. It's a fun adventure and I love the exploration of cultivation. How will he improve in the future? Let's take a look. Then there's the fact that his opponents are beings who ascended a long time ago and don't want to see anyone else up there. At best, they see the world as a farm or a playground. Love the series and the beautiful prose.
- IcehawkRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5An epic tale of martial arts and cultivation. This series is one of the tentpoles of litrpg-esque/adjacent stories for a reason. Well written and thought out with an ever-expanding universe. MC suffers but never gives up no matter how the cards lay. Several major arcs over a large number of books and chapters allows the story to have room.
- SiliconWolfRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0TL;DR: I encourage you to give this story a try.
Story score: Background and plot are nicely done. 5/5
Grammar score: no real problems. 5/5
Character score: vivid and interesting characters. 5/5
Style score: ok, here's where the problems are. The author passes out the same phrases over and over like cheap candy on Halloween. Hero saves vs death! Hero critically succeeds at cultivation attack skill! It would be fine if used in moderation. But instead you find phrases like this in nearly every chapter. 2.5/5
Was it this bad earlier in the books? I want to say no. I didn't struggle to read the first four. But lately, books six and seven have been difficult to read. And somehow this problem is even worse in Billion Credit Heist. I had to drop that one.
If you're interested in trying out a book by this author, give Silver Fox and the Western Hero a try. BUT DON'T READ BILLION CREDIT HEIST AT THE SAME TIME. You'll quickly find yourself irritated by the repeated lines, and that irritation will bleed over between the two books. If you decide you do like this series, you can try out BCH after finishing this one. - JwaishRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5I've been reading this book a very long time, and I've had a certain love/hate relationship with it. On one hand, I hate how the interface messages are written. I find them immersion-breaking in an in-your-face kind of way. Quite frankly, to me, they're less system messages and more like a commentary from an analyst describing something. On the other hand, I love how I can skip reading the battles by just reading the interface messages and knowing roughly how the battle went. I find it quite convenient, as I can't say I'm a fan of how most battle scenes are written.
Of late though, I find that I just can't keep reading this any more. No, the quality hasn't dropped. I wouldn't say it has improved either, but it's good enough. The story is still fairly great and the flow is good. There's nothing wrong with the story.
No, what has me contemplating dropping the story is I feel like the story is going nowhere. Having read the book till now, I feel like the author is more or less following the well-trodden path her story took in the past. Fight the big bad, kill them, die in the process, be born again sometime in the future when your previous love interest is dead or moved on, grieve a bit, find a new damsel to save, ad nauseam. Hell, even in the recent chapter, they've repeated the Dantian-shifting thing.
I don't like harems or even romance in the story. But if in the entire time the MC has been conscious he's had love interests and the story just doesn't develop in any meaningful way, it becomes annoying to read. It feels like I'm watching some romance drama where the protagonists just miss each other by several seconds or are conveniently looking away from each other. It's annoying.
I'm not sure how many times the MC is regressing in their cultivation, but, to me at least, this has become too much. We can't keep repeating the cycle every few books. At this rate, shouldn't the story be considered a time loop? Just kidding, but seriously.
My point is, I love your book. I - Z3n1thRoyal Road★★★ 2.5It’s always sad to drop a series this late in the game. This story actually started fairly interesting and I think with a better editor or beta readers this could be a great series. I made it to book 8 and after the massive time skip it’s just boring now.. the Author desperately wants to create sexual tension with EVERY female character to ever cross Alex’s path.. after 8 books of it it’s a tired plot point..
