Description
Derrick Johansen had been preparing to buckle down for the afternoon with a nice enjoyable game Crusader Kings II. Never in his wildest dreams had he been expecting to end up in the place of the ruler he had chosen when he started the game.
Theoretically, this wouldn't be too bad, trading modern amenities for the life of royalty/nobility.
Of course, that's if he had picked someone with immense power like the Kaiser of the Holy Roman Empire, or some random count in a stable part of Europe for a simpler life.
Of course though, he had to have gone and chosen young Queen Isabella II of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, right at the tail end of the Fifth Crusade when she was only eight years old. All because he thought it'd have been an 'interesting and fun challenge' to try and subvert her fate in history.
Now he has to do it for real and reality is far different from the games. If he doesn't want to end up as the historical footnote she ended up becoming, he'll need to weave his way through a world seemingly set to prevent the rise of someone exactly like Isabella.
How hard could it be?

- Do I ExistRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Absolutely fantastic. I enjoyed every aspect from the interesting characters to the engaging plots and all. I would absolutely recommend to those interested in the Isekai/reincarnation genre as it handles the aspects of said genre quite well. As of this review it only has so many chapters out, and yet I find myself sitting at the edge of my seat in anticipation for the next chapter to be released.
- RulotRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I don't usually like LitRPGs at all, I find them boring and unearned, too much of a game. However, this story has proven me wrong, it doesn't abuse the "digital" elements and it only uses their best things for the narrative, the act of choosing.
Apart from that aspect, the historical accuracy is on point and you go on learning about medieval society and there are pretty significant hints towards political schemes and machinations.
I like the fact that he is reincarnated into a girl of young age, so that in itself is an advantage (adult knowledge almost decades before being a full grown adult), the breaking of barriers, not blatantly but subtlely is also a fun thing to read.
The protagonist has determination and there is a very good internal dialogue on accepting what he "she" is now, the queen of Jerusalem. The characters thoughts and actions are natural, so there are little if no moments where you are thrown out of the immersion.
It is a very entertaining read, I found myself devouring 12 or so chapters in two days. - YuabndsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Solid start to the story. Moves a bit slowly to yet know how it will develop as we've only been on 'set' for a few weeks.
I thought the random back story to explain why there were no maids pointless and overly in the weeds, but it was a fine way to slowly introduce new characters, just felt a bit forced and could have been left unexplained.
The politics between the counselors is a bit simplistic. I feel like the story may be better off by leaving some of the politics unsaid/off screen. I do appreciate that there is no "obviously evil" dude present and also that all characters have their own motivations rather than some overly simple "good vs bad" alignment driven motivations. - corgi in tightsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0From what I have read so far, no understanding of the original source (CKII) is required.
I will begin this review by stating that this novel is far *more* than I thought it would be. The concept itself is very interesting but in 12 chapters I feel extremely invested in everything about the fiction. Good writing is when you can finish thousands of words, keep track of everything going on including side character motifs and genuinely empathize, so suffice to say - this is good writing.
STYLE: First person perspective with really well-placed perspective changes, it flows like a river. The author is experienced and it shows.
STORY: The blurb drew me in. I have little knowledge of the game this story takes place in but things are very intuitive to grasp. Side characters, asforementioned, have believable motives and conclusions (as of Ch. 12). I'm a bit of a history and mythology nerd so this story really appeals to me. Worldbuilding is literally built on a real scenario and it helps that you can feel the crushing hand of society loosen or tighten as chapters go along. 5 stars, no obvious plot-holes I can see. Plot is tight but still leaves a couple strings for later.
GRAMMAR: No doubts - 5 stars. Good sentence structure, interesting word choice (especially the uh.. swears).
CHARACTER: This is usually the make or break for me. Isekai, love it or hate it, is sadly an overdone trope these days, the novel plays it off beautifully by tying it into the world - people notice, MC notices, the world(or system) itself too. I love the dialogue that takes place, it just feels realistic.
As far as reviews go this is pretty generic, I'm aware of that, you're aware of that - but at this point I've read probably hundreds of books similar to this (all political, underdog, new body, etc.) and this genuinely stands out to me as one of the best even with the minimal number of chapters posted. Give it a shot, or don't - your loss.
I found it criminal that there were only a few other reviews - molkRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Ahh, to be stuck in Crusader Kings instead of some cozy fantasy world were good and evil are often easy to distinquish. The writing is excellent so far, theirs a little bit of litrpg being inside a game and all. Do hope stats and game elements would't overshadow the ruling, intrigue and kingdom building thats the core essence of the Crusader Kings games.
