[Books 1, 2 and 3 now available in e-book, audiobook and physical forms!]

On New Year's Eve, Lo Fennrick decides that he wants to die. The universe seems to hear him for the first time in his entire life, and just as the clock strikes 00:00, a message pops up inviting him to the Tutorial. Fennrick accepts. But at the prompt to choose the difficulty level, is there anything the former pro gamer can do but pick the very hardest--appropriately titledHell?

Hell, as the name implies, is nothing less than endless torment, not all too dissimilar to what Fennrick's life already was. Monsters, imprisonment and execution is enough to stretch what little sanity he has left to the brink of snapping, a haze of RED, BLACK and WHITE threatening to submerge him in eternal madness. However, despite his numerous sins and misdeeds, the world isn't quite ready to see him off just yet. Will those he cherishes be able to save him from the mad clutches of his own brain, or will he simply drag them down together with him into his self-made hell?

Originally a fanfic of anothers story that grew a lige of its own, as the story drifted and became something if its own the author has set forth to trully divest his writing from his inspiration and build upon the differences ti create his own work to be enjoyed.  Similar to some the authors other works, I've enjoyed this story just as well.
Honestly I don't like the main character.  He's the type of person who generally speaking talks shit with nothing to back it up, believes everything and everyone is against them and has no clue why all of life's failures are their own fault.
Knowing this and how much I dislike every interaction of the main character, it is nice seeing how the story progresses amd he matures albeit slower than a time stopped turtle, but still incrementally.
I've been enjoying the mechanics of the game and how the character is also slowly devolving into a monster physically gaining the characteristics needed to survive in any environment while also having morality beat into his stupid thick skull. I forsee by the end he'll reluctantly have gained insight into morality and empathy, however he'll be changed beyond reckoning physically.
I like the little nods to true hell as well, such as the jaguar wolf and lion from Dantes inferno, or cerebrum.  I have an inkling that the gods that look upon him favorably have a spark of the 7 sins.  Such as goddess of want = envy, or God of cowardice = sloth(or maybe pride since pride would get a laugh out of makeing a cowards action viable).  Still not enough gods in favor yet to tell for certain though.
So 5 stars, I'd say 4 since I dislike the Mc, however I understand he's a character designed to be hated and since he is that makes him designed well so 5

First off, the MC's an evil bastard. Not just a manipulative edge lord or a comedic saturday-morning-cartoon villain, but a genuine monster. If you can't stomach a story whose main character commits genuine atrocities then I must advice you against reading this one. If you can though, you're in for a suprisingly deep read with a lot of unexpected emotional growth and struggle. The beginning's a bit chaotic/strange though and I feel like there's a bit of a disconnect between where we start and where we end up. Nontheless, I really appreciate this story and the topics it explores through a Main Character who's both a childish monster and yet someone you can't help but watch in the hope that he improves.

To preface, I've read the previous version, as well as what it was based off of, so I have/had expectations and hopes when I started reading.
This story brings a certain feeling of realism and unhinged-ness that I don't get from anything else I've read on this site. While obviously the premise is as unrealistic as most things, the author is able to draw you in in such a way that you can feel an understanding of the main character, Fennrick, while still being able to be horrified by the decisions he's chosen and made.
If you don't think you're interested, I'd say at least read a couple of chapters. The writing up to the point I've seen (past chapter 100), has remained consistent, and will show you one way or the other if you'd like it.
Grammar is nigh spotless. The only grammar errors I've seen have been from when they're intentionally placed.
The style of this story is amazing. Like I said before, you get drawn in with the details, and when things calm down, you lean back and take a breath... up until Fennrick does something or has something happen to him again. It's a breath of fresh air, then back diving into whatever hole has been so conveniently placed in front of him.
Character wise, there's a level of growth that feels downright, gasp, human!!?!
Honestly, the depth that's been put into all the characters, even one-offs, has been delightful to read. Fennrick is insane, yes. So far removed from what's normal that he does sickening and horrifying things on a regular basis, true. But he's growing. The people he's able to make contact with are able to reach him in such a way that it feels just right.
The story is similarly great. The overall premise is so far somewhat simple, that is to leave the tutorial, but I'm sure that's going to change. Going back and reading this version, there's setup and foreshadowing that I hadn't caught the first time I read through it, so it can't be said that there's little thought put into this.

The story is fun to read and has good charters
It has very good character progression, the story shows what it takes for the MC to survive hell from him being a try-hard to just an inhuman monster that will do anything to survive. Except low budget gamer system with berserk levels of just excruciating misery that the MC has to go through

Read every chapter out on patreon, and man, it is good. Endless suffering and misery? Character development (degeneration)? Interesting characters (who will all probably die horribly)? Wildly varying methods of torture? An unique story? A fate I'd never wish for even my enemies? Morbid and honestly nauseating (but fun) solutions to simple problems? All this and more, written extremely disturbingly but extremely well in the Gamer's guide to beating the tutorial.
Somehow it never gets old. Kill, gut, eat your enemies, cry, paint with blood, repeat. You'd think it gets boring, but it doesn't. There is always a twist on it, always another way to make Fennrick's existence jut a bit (or a lot) worse, and that's what we are here for. Well, a lot of people. I've read people saying that he deserves what he's going through and such, I disagree. Looked at from an outsider's view, someone who lives a regular life, what he does would warrant the death penalty anywhere, but that view is simply incorrect due to the hell part being true. He is losing his mind due to the unfair structure of the tutorial, while being forced into worse and worse choices that are the only way to survive. Between death and murder, even though they claim they wouldn't, most people would choose murder, after all the survival instinct is the strongest. Also, I think most under the same conditions would be the same.
Or, maybe I'm stupid and all of this is wrong.
Anyways, if you don't read it I'll haunt you as a ghost after I die. Read it now

God damn I love this novel. Out of all the books I have read, this is by far my favorite. There's something just so disgustingly, brutally human about Kitty and the way he acts. He's a an emotional, confused, struggling, hypocritical monster in a way only humans are capable of. No plant nor animal is capable of the cruelties the human mind can conjure, and I see that in Kitty. He's like a feral cornered animal, but one capable of complex thought. He wants to survive at any and all cost, be it a life, or his humanity. But I can also see that he doesn't want this, to be this monster he's become. He's a beast of circumstance borne through necessity, fear, desperation, and suffering. I cant see him as a good person, but neither can I see him as evil, as I wouldn't be surprised if I made the same choices if in his shoes.
It reminds me of a quote I read in another novel on this site; "Blame not the beast for its beastly flesh and beastly ways." -Father of Monstrosity by Dosei

This is the first time I wrote a rewiev for something, but this story deserved it. The way it managed to portray a broken character as the mc is simply phenomenal. The gore scenes are there for a reason and play a essential part in the character progression of the mc. The side characters seldom turn up, but when they do, they leave a lasting impression.
In summary I can say, that not everyone will like the story, because the mc can be quite psychotic at times, but it's worth a try!

There's literally no way I can express how much I love this book! But I'm going to try without spoiling anything OK here we go. The main character does grow but keeps the same charm that we love him for. This is the kind of book that you pick up when you were on a break from that hero B***S***. It definitely earned its villain tag and antihero tag. It's kind a hard to find  stories  like this and this type of story is definitely one of my favorites. Overall a great story. I hope you continue for many chapters to come.

So, lemme say that I love this story. I read the original version, and I am copying my review over from the previous version to this one. Main character wasn't a very good guy before he joined the tutorial, and lets just say, he gets so much worse. The story shares some plot elements with Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint and similar stories, with gods that indirectly affect the events by "rewarding" points and skills at the end of a stage, floor, etc. Spoiler for talking about more of the story in a general sense, still sorta spoiler.
Main character is alive because of dumb luck. His reasons for picking his starter weapon didn't matter, his plans didn't matter, the first floor is a death sentence. The only reason he is still kicking is because he is well on his way to maxing his passive skills before the first floor is over, and continues this on the later floors. I also get that the main view point of the story is our delusional, maladjusted, completely insane main character, but I would have enjoyed a bit more backstory/build-up for the Representatives and the Executives, but I also get that the story is trying to show that the main character has nothing to do with everyone else. Its good, but this is also a double-edged sword, because some people want an MC that plays a role in almost all the stories/arcs happening in the story.
Style and Grammar is a 5 because the style is great, because it disregards Grammar to make it work. I honestly would've left grammar blank if it didn't tank the grammar score, since it doesn't really apply. When the story is at a point where regular grammar can exist, its good. But this story is told from a 1st person view, so the story is being told from the main character's perspective, not from an outside view. Sentences are not the reader seeing what is happening, it is the MC telling you what is happening. Its confusing to describe, and I know I'm not describing this well, but you know, its whatever. Either you understand this ramble, o

It's difficult to write a review without getting personal about it and discussing very much spoilers, so I'm going to do both- I'll just clearly part my spoilery thoughts for the very end, so this is my warning.
That being said. I find that although I can't say I've read too many stories on royal road, I'd struggle to find another that hits me as deeply as this one has. I've felt a flurry of emotion for Fennrick, ranging from hatred, disgust, and pity all the way to pity, understanding, and.. relief. I suppose. I don't think I've ever felt such a strong and wide array of emotion for a character before, and I'm not sure if I love it or hate it. In a way, though, I think this story was one I very much needed- and will continue to need.
I don't know how much I can say about the genre. The system, the world, etc. I'm not well read on this genre in the first place, and to me where this book shines the most is in it's character and world building. It's well written, and maybe just like me you'll end up in tears and when you're caught up, you'll be a better person for it. Maybe you won't. I still feel regardless if this is just a fun story or one that.. rips your heart out of your chest so to say, it's still one very much worth reading.
If anything, I literally spent an entire straight 24 hours doing nothing but reading this story- I didn't sleep, I haven't slept yet, and that feels almost ironic to me. If that doesn't speak in itself for the story, what will?
So.. for the personal stuff that dips heavily into spoilers. Again SPOILERS. If you haven't caught up- do yourself a favor and do NOT read this. Please. This story is one best experienced blind.
To be blunt, saying I "just cried" is.. untrue. In fact, on hitting a very specific chapter (one I can't recall the number of atm, forgive me.) I had a borderline mental breakdown and closed out of the app. I was convinced I wasn't going to be capable of finishing it at all. But.. after several hours and quite a bit of dissoc
