- akhier the dragon heartedRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is turning out to be quite a decent tale! Despite being a slow burn, the pacing feels well done. Advancement isn't being drawn out or rushed. The main character starts off bed bound and it is only through the loss of their father that they begin to free themselves that restriction. The loss of their father drives them and yet at the same time it takes all of their willpower to keep going knowing that their father will never be able to see the progress they are making. The story is emotionally charged and you can feel those emotions come through loud and clear.
Style - The story has a consistent point of view and with the well done pacing this translates to feeling things progress at a steady pace.
Story - The characters motivation is based on tragedy which you can feel drip off the paragraphs. Combined with what views we have gotten of the larger setting paints a picture or what we'll be seeing once the Main Character finally gets out of the location they start.
Grammer - Earlier I mentioned "tragedy which you can feel drip off then paragraphs". The story makes excellent use of words to project feelings, almost excessively.
Character - The main character so far has been consistent. They act with some impulsiveness brought on by the restricted circumstances they start with. All of which is tempered by the intense emotional termoil they are going through after having suffered such a devastating loss. - chrisdnyxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style:
The writing style is rich in detail, allowing readers to genuinely connect with the protagonist’s thoughts and emotions. The pacing feels steady and engaging, and the author’s approach to portraying the character’s situation makes it seem as though he truly stepped into his characters’ shoes. The vivid descriptions add emotional depth to the narrative, drawing you in from the beginning.
Story:
The story opens with a bittersweet and heartfelt tone. Those who’ve spent much of their lives in hospitals or faced similar limitations will likely resonate deeply with the protagonist’s early struggles. The concept of receiving a final gift from a loved one that could change your life is both moving and inspiring, it strikes a beautiful balance between sorrow and hope.
Grammar:
The grammar is clean and well-handled, making the story smooth and easy to follow.
Characters:
Johannes stands out for his emotional resilience. Despite his hardships, he remains grounded and uncomplaining… a rare strength. His mature outlook on life adds depth to his character, and I’m eager to see how he makes use of his father’s final gift.
His father, though a man of few words, is portrayed as deeply caring. Watching your child suffer is an unimaginable burden, and the father’s love comes through clearly in his final act.
Conclusion:
I Inherited My System From My Father is an emotional journey with heartfelt storytelling.I’m excited to follow Johannes as he begins this new chapter of his life. A touching and well-crafted story! - Cowabunga_BluewriterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0First of all, this was an altogether different experience from what I’ve had with Lit RPGs. Most I’ve read do not build up the character til later. This starts character building from chapter one. Johannes starts as a sickly man, not able to breathe without help, but this quickly changes at the exchange of his father’s life. Johannes is a rather nuanced character whose goal is to be stronger and to become a Diver. What I liked most about this was that instead of outgrowing the character’s weaknesses caused by his illness, it leans into it, fortifying the character both mentally and physically. The skills aren’t OP either, but things each of us takes for granted.
Story:
I am enjoying immensely the sassy system and the Master of Doom lol. As I pointed out earlier, the Lit RPG elements are a bit different, catering to a weakened mortal man rather than an adventure testosterone-driven maniac. Anyway, with his abilities being as they are, I can see some of them growing OP sometime in the future, but that’s way in the future, though. There must be a reason why his dad never used the system. I ain’t there yet, but I hope to get there!
Style:
The pacing is great, and the tone is also good. The first chapter’s opening sentence: Johannes is a young man who never flinched when fate pulled on its silken strings. This can be given umph like so: Johannes never flinched when fate pulled on its silken strings. You need to make it immediate and captivating for your readers to be reeled in. Otherwise, you are fine! The third-person past limited is a good pov to do this story in and offers good insights into Johannes' character without the heavy internalizing of first-person pov or head-hopping povs of third omniscient, and I doubt you’d want to tell this story in second-person pov lol.
Character:
Johannes is a great character filled with many contradicting emotions, which marks him as a caring individual and not a sociopath. Often, Lit RPGs don’t go into deep characterization, instea - CapwallcroftRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I Inherited My System From My Father is a heartfelt and very unique LitRPG that intertwines personal loss with the challenges of newfound power (bros gotta LITRPG to save his life). The story follows Johannes, a young man grappling with depression and the recent death of his father in a world increasingly threatened by mysterious dungeons.
The narrative begins with a touching message from Johannes's deceased father, introducing a system that offers him a chance at a new life. This system, reminiscent of those found in popular progression fantasies, provides Johannes with abilities that gradually transform his frail body, starting with the simple yet profound act of breathing unaided. I am assuming as this progresses he's gonna go crazy in the dungeons!
What sets this story apart is its focus on the emotional and psychological aspects of Johannes's journey. The author delves deep into the protagonist's internal struggles, portraying his grief, self-doubt, and gradual acceptance of change with sincerity and depth. Great writing and good grammar overall!!
While the pacing is intentionally slow to allow for character development and world-building, some readers might find the early chapters a bit leisurely. However, this deliberate approach enhances the emotional resonance of Johannes's transformation.
The writing style is introspective, offering readers a window into Johannes's thoughts and feelings. This narrative choice fosters a strong connection between the reader and the protagonist, making his victories feel personal and earned.
While the pacing is intentionally slow to build the world and character arcs, there are moments where more vivid, detailed descriptions could enhance the immersion, especially during critical scenes.
Overall it is a powerful, emotionally gripping take that combines the LITRPG genre in a very unique and potent way. It's sad, it's definitely a heart wrenching story but it also is one that slowly progresses into something far more powerf - EdenCRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story immediately draws readers in through strong emotional writing. Johannes is a very grounded and believable character, and his struggles feel authentic from the first chapter onward. The author excels at creating internal monologue and emotional resonance, especially when depicting grief, quiet hope, and small moments of triumph.
The early pacing is slow, focusing heavily on Johannes' emotional journey, which fits the tone well. However, readers should be prepared for a slow-burn start rather than an immediate action hook. Those who enjoy emotional depth will find the buildup rewarding, but readers looking for fast-paced tension from the first chapter may need a little extra patience.
One area that could elevate the storytelling even more is in the presentation of scenes. Currently, the narrative leans heavily on internal thoughts and direct description. If the story added a little more cinematic flair by "showing" more through vivid actions, sensory details, and dynamic scene movement, it could make key emotional moments hit even harder. The foundation is already strong, and enhancing the atmosphere would help scenes feel even more alive.
Overall, this is a touching, slow-burn journey with a refreshing take on system stories. Readers who enjoy emotionally-driven character growth will find a lot to love here. - HastumRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0There are many interpretations of litRPG systems. From integral parts of the world to skills only available to protagonists, and I have to say this interpretation is one of the best. The power progression through the system is gradual, starting from the first skills like breathing and standing. This makes it feel more alive and gives a fresh perspective. It is further enhanced by the emotions coloring the story, such as the loss of a father contrasted by the happiness of reclaiming one's life even at the expense of the tragic death in the family.
Story: The story follows our MC, who is tied to a hospital bed and unable to live or even breathe without the help of machinery. The death of his father allows him to inherit a unique and interesting system that shines throughout the narrative. We begin with the gradual progress of the Mc learning skills that will enable him to function normally. Even though the skills may not be cinematic, they feel rewarding and emotional. Witnessing the MC stand for the first time is more impactful than many battles. Furthermore, the system and its effects are tied to the character's emotions, making it much more unique, and the MC's feelings hold greater significance.
Character: As I already mentioned, the character Johannes is a young man lying in a hospital bed. We get to know him through an emotional scene in which his father passes away, and his monologue and internal conflict easily capture our interest. The MC is likable. He is torn between his father's death and the celebration of the power bestowed upon him, making him easy to root for.
Style and Grammar: I’m not sure where the issue lies, so I’m addressing them together as one. I think the writing could use some polish. The raw emotion, interesting system, and unique progression get buried under awkward wording and strange descriptions. The grammar is fine in the sense that there are no misspellings or grammatical errors, but the abundance of odd descriptions and unclear, meand - Human514Royal Road★★★★ 3.5I actually read a lot of LitRPG genre before. Some featured battle systems, some featured gaming skills, others featured special techniques of cooking or building. This story is a typical one that is similar to stories like "Solo Leveling", a story with a main character struggling with he's emotions about he's family, often getting their powers inherited by their family members. It also captivates the mind of readers by showing a weak character into a powerful character using certain mechanisms, showing some aspects of a munchkin. However, putting this much emotion into a character, and putting a lot of words in every chapter, shows that the author is, at least in some regards, surpassed the bar of an amateur writer. I wish that their was more aspect of creativity in the story, like the background of the story, or the system of the book(perheps I read too many LitRPG to begin with, so I don't like the story having the same pattern), but I think that it has potential in terms of how much a writer can write. The story of Johannes, in the other hand, is actually pretty typical. I like how the writer wrote about the emotions of the main character, and he's motives, but I think it can be typical sometimes, like how the boys in Shonen Manga can feel. The main character has this grief towards he's father's death, one that portrays the love of family from the main character, and he is also eager to improve he's ability, with the purpose of becoming a fighter. Perhaps he's motives or purpose can be a little more creative? Perhaps he could use he's powers for somewhat selfish reasons(like destroying he's enemies for he's own level up), and perhaps he could use he's grief towards he's father to fight against he's enemies. But anyways, that's just my opinion, honestly.
- WiltedFaunaRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5SPOILERS AHEAD!
I actually don't have too much experience with LitRPG, but I've read a few. All in all though, I will be reviewing this story through the lens of a general one at the end of the day, what it accomplishes and what it could use some work on!
Unique Take!
This story tries to be an emotional ride of a boy who lost his father, tied in with the aspects of an RPG. Honestly, I didn't expect it to work but it's been an interesting read so far. The premise is unique and kinda fun, so that's what initially hooked me.
Does it succeed, though? Sometimes.
The System
Probably my favorite part of the book is the system and how it's presented. I'll start off with something slightly critical and say that the first chapter was a bit of an info-dump, but it doesn't detract much from how unique this entire prose is. Small screens popping up- the fact Johannes chose breathing as his first skill, all pretty funny actually and its the best developed part of the book for sure. From the mysterious characters met to the skills chosen and the quest system introduced, its what makes this book stand apart from the others.
Mixes Feelings on Johannes
I'm gonna go a bit out of order and just mention Johannes here. The story does a good job of hooking you emotionally with the loss of his dad, and there's at times in the books where you can relate to the anxiety he feels with the gain of new powers. The interactions we're given with him interacting with others and the systems are pretty fun too. He's a lil' quirky, but it's a nice, breath of fresh air at times. Usually within these tropes, lots of sadness occurs. While there's some sadness still there, I think the fact the story shifts it to light heartedness at times does give us a character who feels new and not always depressed and brooding.
However, the way he's presented at times can feel... rushed? Which isn't something you'd want from a slow-burning book. Scenes are often summarized instead of being gone into in depth. We're to - AddictednovelicRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5A faint but strong father and son bond. I especially like the words "you are a fighter, you always been a fighter" those words struck a chord with me.
Also, it but been clitche about him being able to breath but small steps in big strifes. Also, I like the foreshadowing into his future. It makes a the reader what to see how he progress. - Chetan VashisthaRoyal Road★★★ 3.0I tore through this litRPG saga rooting for frail Johannes every gasp of the way—his heartbreaking fight for each breath and wry internal quips made me care, but the story would grip me even more if the author showed those moments in vivid, cinematic detail instead of summarizing them.
Tho I would say that story have potential.
