Book 1:Heavenly Shae: Old MonsterA teenage girl with a secret or two is stuck on a mountain with a powerful cultivator, an Old Monster. He suspects she is holding back information which could help him break through to immortality.Sheis fed up with him. Book 2:Heavenly Shae: Manifold JourneyTravel with Shae as she journeys to join the sect. A slower paced travel-log that ballooned out to be longer than intended. Has a lot of shorter story arcs that show off a lot of the world and still has some early progression for our heroine! Book 3:Heavenly Shae: Librarian in the MirrorShae has reached the sect and prepares for her first year as a student and cultivator. What hijinks await!? This is a xianxia / cultivation novel written by a fan of the genre and Canadian. This is a fun andcasual*approach to this mythic formula (*less grim & serious) with lots of slice of life, some cozy scenes, and a cast thatdoesn'ttake themselvestooseriously. This is a more relaxed interpretation of a cultivationworld,so expect differences to crop up. It's a great ride for fans of the genre, and especially fans of more casual & comedic takes on it. Update schedule: about once a week. What to Expect(some spoilers here):-Slice of life tag: Conflict arcs are shorter and develop rather quickly. The story mainly progresses through slice of life and character driven arcs as Shae steps along her cultivation path.-Comedy tag: Very light on straight up jokes with minimalforcedhumor. Mainly aims for humor to develop during natural dialogue. (Review complaining about it was during the second book. *shrug* Can't please them all.)-Reincarnation tag: could be called an isekai, however the story skips most of the normal truck-kun tropes and starts far into Shae's life where the plot & cultivation journey is.-Fewer physical fights, more interpersonal & dialogue conflict. (Therearefights later, spaced out a lot.)-Occasional, in depth examinations of cultivation as Shae explores her new abilities. Sometimes with big & showy displays of power. However, her reflection is usually internal as she meditates and contemplates.-Many unknowns about cultivation details that Shae is slowly exploring.Someof it is intended to be understood by readers familiar with the genre.-Lots of subtext and implied storytelling. Speed-reading or low retention may cause you problems.Sorry, not sorry. Don't skim,read!-Varied tone and themes. It's a very character driven story, soooo...stuffhappens!-Flawed characters that make mistakes (including the MC). Whatnotto expect:-Hyper-tragic backstory, murder-hobos, violence as spectacle, litrpg or system elements.-Full, in-story explanations for everything that happens. The mystery is part of the fun!-Cat pictures. *sad Shae face* Winner of the April 2024 Writathon!(crushed it!)Winner of the November 2024 Writathon!(ezpz)

I usually skip stuff with the comedy tag because most authors try to hard to force the humor.  In this fiction, the comedy seems to flow naturally as part of the story and dialogue.
The premise of the story is that a librarian from Earth reincarnated in a Xianxia world. The story starts kind of slow, but we skip any super baby syndrome.  It picks up with our MC essentially kidnapped by a powerful cultivator.  The author does a great job of slipping in her backstory through the chapters. We also skip any tutorial chapters on the different levels of cultivation.  If you are looking for a lot of action and face slapping, this is not for you.
What I really like is the way the main character leverages her Earth knowledge to help her in the new world.

I've been looking for a while for xianxia stories that take it slow and pay closer attention to the experience of cultivation and what it's like to live in a cultivation world. Though the story is still in the 'early stages' of cultivation, what would be the introduction of many other stories, it has already nicely scratched that itch for me. It's not afraid to marinate in the day to day of a beginner cultivator's life and gives itself a lot of breathing room.
Style: Solid and distinct, but not the most appealing part of the story. I do feel like the prose leans too much on a 'this and then that and then that' pattern, rather than a driving through-line or a smooth flow, but it's still plenty readable.
Story: As mentioned before, this is a slower fic that manages that pace well, letting the relationships between the characters grow and change credibly and taking us through the character's learning process alongside her. This is exactly what I've been looking for elsewhere and rarely found, and I expect a lot of other people will enjoy it as well. Tension, humor, and drama are quite well balanced and flow into one another.
Grammar: Broadly very competent with one tiny little complaint. The author sometimes uses punctuation a bit oddly, sometimes in ways which seem incorrect and sometimes in ways that just break the flow. For example, for chapter 8:
When she had focused too much on her right side. Small shocks and synesthesia like flashes of light were all she could sense. Whereas her left side was like a dull gray field.
This stood out to me more in the earlier chapters. Not a huge deal, but worth paying attention to in future edits/revisions.
Character Score: Understated, but very strong. We've only got three characters in the story so far, but I feel like I know the protagonist and the old monster very well by this point, have seen many sides of them, and they feel quite real. I look forward to meeting an expanded cats in the upcoming chapters!
    Overall, this is a d

Really, this is so much more than what is advertised, an in-depth exploration of concepts based on different understandings. Well thought-out and phrased, at times almost poetic. It just works.
Very good in the 'Show, don't tell' department, so far it's a slice of life and slow-paced, but it doesn't feel slow, not much is happening and yet it always manage to send the reader(me) into reflection and introspection.
Good grammar, well fleshed-out and interesting character and a good premise.
    5/5 recommendation on my part.
I believe this is my first review in almost 3 years of reading on RR, as the title said, how is this not more popular ? I'm a big fan of somewhat westernized or alternative-view xianxia, and this does scratch that itch.
It also delves more deeply into the underlying mechanics of a universe with Qi, where Qi is not the basis of everything, the answer to all that is, but rather more of an added layer, affecting reality as we know it without subverting it completely.
How haven't I written 200 words yet ? I don't have much else to say so far I'm only at chapter 9, I might come back and edit this later to update my review.
Author of you're reading this, you've made a stellar work so far, please don't drop the story like so many others... I think a previous comment said this as well. Now I'm rambling, I'll hit submit and see if I wrote my required 200 words...
    Go pick it up !

I would describe this story as a more Character driven xianxia instead of the usual "power-progression/quick dopamin" storys that are more common on here. Overall its slower paced with more slice of life elemnets but this enables us to learn with Shae as she stumbles (up to now) through the beginning of cultivation.
Since i am not experienced in writing myselfe and english isnt my first language i decided to not make this an advanced review but i wanted to still give an opinion about it:
Gramatical mistakes/typo like stuff is far and few inbetween and gets fixed very fast once its brought to the authors attention. Overall its a very smooth reading experience.
The characters and not just the protagonist are well fleshed out with their own motivations and relationships.
In conclusion: I am looking forward to the continuation of Shae's journey and hope you give this fiction a try.

This story is without a doubt one of the stronger xianxia stories on royal road. I believe it suffers from a lack of attention due to the lack of an image. I also have to apologise in advance as someone who finds it easier to focus on the aspects I would like to see improved. The four stars reflect my true opinion and if my main criticism was resolved it would be a true five starts.
It is always best to start with the good stuff. So, the cultivation mechanisms are complex, varied, and generally difficult to understand. Which I absolutely love. It feels like you truly join the protagonist on their journey and find it as difficult as she does. You get a real sense of how much effort has to be expended and thus also how exceptional she is. This is truly the strongest part of the work. The challenges are more about understanding and ideas. Which makes it truly feel like a cultivation story and not an action story with cultivation. The world itself is also a breath of fresh air compared to what you normally get. In some ways it is quite advanced and in others, such as technology, not at all. That it is different offsets my gripes with it at times. That it feels anachronistic and that there is an misunderstanding of the author what is needed in material and personnel cost for certain institutions to exist and knowledge to be spread. If you don’t think about it too deeply, as one should for most works of fictions, it is truly a world of wonder.
I have two major points of contention with this work the personality of the protagonist and the interaction between characters. My problems with them stem from the same source and I find it difficult to put my finger on it but I will try. The protagonist has a quite developed sense of self and this often clashes with certain other individuals. She has certain expectations that severely clash with reality and instead of folding she stays strong. Which is certainly admirable, but in reality one must compromise at times or at least see

I have a few problems with the book mainly how childish the character behaves and how mature she really thinks she is.
She is like a know-it-all person always needs to be correct never able to self-reflect and always needs to one up the other.
I really dislike this MC on few things the temper tantrums and never able to think to herself maybe I'm wrong sees all the wrong around her and decides that the person that is clearly the leader should behave in the way she finds things should be. She behaves like a child I'm very curious if the author does this knowingly or he thinks that he makes her sound adult like, but I can and only see a petulant child.
Yes, there have been time where I just wanted to just stop reading, I would have if I didn't read all in one go but the book is still very well written, and it is fun. I like all the different perspective the author makes and how it blends into the story it's often better to let the reader see stuff from other person perspective to maybe make them try to understand the MC better.
I never read the comments under a chapter, and I think I have posted very few comments on a real chapter if any at all but some chapters pissed me off and I really wanted to write something but then I thought it's in the middle of the story and why bother I don't want to influence the author with what I think and feel I'd much rather read a story I don't influence.
Keep up the good work this is quite good only other real complaint is the pacing I find it to slow I sure like slow paced books, but I find this to be too slow I don't want to say anything more since I would feel it would be a spoiler if I describe all of this too much.

The story is solid at the core. Plot isn't too unbelievable (it is xianxia-ish), setting is sparse if you think about it but it doesn't really impact the story flow, and the characters are mostly pretty strong. Not always super-logical, but rarely so farfetched as to be implausible. The clash of social norms between MC and the people around her is interesting, and mostly well-written as well.
The kicker, though, and what has driven me away and prompted the review... Well... You know that kind of person who takes any word ending with -er and follows it with a "word? I hardly know her?", or frequently trots out lame "jokes" like responding to "... you can call me just Name" with "Hi just Name", or who has to comment on everything that could possibly be taken as innuendo? Yeah, well, that's the most consistent aspect of the book besides the technical quality of the writing. It's just stupid joke after stupid joke, and they're not even funny in story context.
