The book is an excellent read for whenever there is downtime. The characters feel like people, the conversations flow, and everyone has motives. The setting is intriguing; there is so much to expand on. Then he mixes these two to make a world that feels real both in and out. Despite this, it is easy to understand and makes you want more, and I am looking forward to where he goes.

I'm very impressed by the writer's eloquent style and imagery, verbose in the best possible way. The setting is gritty and interesting without losing any of the colorful fantasy elements, the characters are compelling and frequently surprise me. You can bet I would pick this up if I came across it in a store, it ticks every box for me.
For the sake of transparency, I am a friend of the author and a long-time fan of their work.

I love the fact that this isn't a traditional good-aligned hero story, but still cast in the way of how death has a role to play that isn't neccesarily evil. Flawless grammar with descriptive, but not overly so, prose. This story is a joy to read and I'm on the edge of ny seat waiting to find out what happens next!

I like Hannibal's style, and I like VRMMO stories. So obviously I would like Eternus online.
This review is based on Ch13.
To go more in-depth, I would say that a lot of the author's traditional esthetic goes into this one as well, so if you like his other projects, especially the Sanguine Prince, chances are high you will like this one too.
I like VRMMO stories, when they are interesting. Basically, power fantasies that don't tell anything aside for a progressive braindead search for power aren't my thing. And good thing, Eternus doesn't seem to be heading towards that. Although, that's not to say there won't be some adventuring. I don't know at this point.
My favorite VRMMO story is Infinite Dendrogram (the Light Novel, not the crappy anime adaptation), and Eternus has some resemblance to it, so this also explains why I am so positive towards it. A mix of kingdom building, political intrigue, solo adventuring, fantasy, IRL stuff too, this is the good kind of VRMMO story, in my book.
So yeah, I may update this review to an advanced one later, when there is more content. For now, I am satisfied with this.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to play as the BBEG in an mmo game? Well, you are in luck because that's exactly what you are getting in this novel!
TL;DR: the story is pretty great so far, expect it to get better after the writhathon ends and Hannibal stops rushing out chapters to meet the required wordcount.
The following review includes minor spoilers for the first couple of chapters.
The story follows Brad Pendragon, alias Romulus (as he is known in-game), a history nerd turned Avatar of the Dark (but not evil) Goddess as he tries to gain some personal agency and fulfill his yearning for adventure, which he so dearly lacked in the real world.
Or so Romulus claims, but as chapters 2 through 16 take place in-game, there was a bunch of telling and very little showing of this fact, which is the main reason why I rate the characters as 4.5 out of 5 stars. The side chracters, on the other hand, are well written and definitely not one-dimensional, though they could use some develepment. After reading the author's other stories, I am reasonably certain that this will happen once things slow down after the ongoing conflict is over.
Without going into more spoilers, the story so far seems quite well thought out, with plenty of hints as to where it's going. We can probably expect empire management, large scale warfare and epic showdowns between key individuals. There may be some romance and sexual content, though there was none so far.
In terms of style, expect lovingly crafted (read 'occasionally long and exhausting') descriptions of scenes, objects and characters. I can't say I am a fan of this style of writing, but Hannibal is pretty good at writing them so I am disinclined to take away points for those. Expect a lot of inspiration from the Roman empire, Arthurian legends and all things dark, gothic and edgy. Also vampires, but not the 'shines in the light like a freaking disco ball' kind. No, these are the 'supernaturely beautiful predator who's going to r

The story is very good, I like the characters they are intelligent and not cliché at all and I love the premise. Honestly at the moment I do not have any complaints about the story and my standards for royalroad stories are very high. There is just one issue however, at the time of this review I have already read over 200pages/14 chapters but plot has barely gotten started, this is not a bad thing in my opinion in fact I really like it. However it does mean that the author needs to be in this for the long haul, think thousands of pages, and I have no way of knowing whether this will ever become a finished story like Mother of learning, or whether this story this just stop in the middle of the plot like so many others have done. For Example I'm at chapter 14 right now and the author said chapter 15 would be uploaded days ago and that still hasnt happend and im left wondering whether chapter 15 will ever come. However if the author can keep the quality of his chapters as high as they are now and if he sticks to a regular upload schedule, I know I will be reading all the chapters of this story however many there may be.

Really enjoying it so far. The author is getting better and better with each release! I really like the dialogue and how the lead character swaps between RP and his personal vernacular as needed. I'm excited to see whether he goes for a more intimate story with the main character or widens the scope into more of a political story. Lets find out!

Eternus Online is a fantastically written story from a point of view that is often sorely overlooked. The buildup of the characters and the exposition in the story are both addicting and highly sought after from a fiction fan like myself. This is a story I would highly recommend to anyone looking for fantasy with a heavy dose of darkness and a touch of humor.
Grammatical errors were quickly remedied and the flow of the story was unimpeded by the simple mistakes. I look forward to reading more of the story and find myself rooting for the presumed "antagonist" more than I have in any other work of fiction.
I feel that even though Romulus was forced into this role without much time to make a decision that he is well-rounded and honest about his lack of experience, I find that a lot of writers will often make their leading characters far too powerful and as a result, the story seems destined for a certain ending no matter how it's written. Hannibal manages to keep me guessing and also intrigued in the main characters growth.
When it comes to the style of the story it gives me dark fantasy vibes, which is something I look out for when looking for new fictions to read. The story so far has managed to check all of the boxes that I often have when reading independently written stories. I would not however recommend this story for anyone who has an aversion to heavy violence, blood or horror themes as there are plenty of each of these within the chapters available.
Overall, I look forward to more chapters of Eternus and can't wait to see the climax of the final arc. Hannibal is a fantastic writer and you would be sorely missing out if choosing to skip this title.

If this was anywhere but RR I'd give it 1 star...but it's RR, and I have to compare it to it's peers
So I'll sum up the good - good grammar/ok prose, satisfying chapter length. Plot is coherent, world mechanics easy to understand.
Everything else - It honestly reads like the summary/unpublishable draft of what the author wants this story to be. Standard game-thats-actually-realworld. Standard something-goes-wrong/god-plan path to MC OP power. Also said goddess is hot, and DTF. But none of it feels fleshed out, like everything the MC does feels like an apethetic choice (which doesn't seem in any way what the author is going for) and a.way to move the plot forward/get the MC OP. As someone who reads a loot of RR trash, I felt my brain fully switched off by this.
MC does the whole chooses Evil, but this actually means he's good thing. We get a classic line about him skull-fucking the God of Light...for reasons?
MC is explicitly told he'll be doing a lot of murders, MC, takes a second to fully internalize that all of the NPCs are real living people...then decides he's totally cool with murdering a bunch of them for power. BUT he's still a good guy!!
Idk, I wanted to like this. Made it 9 chapters in and gave up. If you want to read a new 'Evil' MC story try Unknown Swordcraft. Caught up on that right before trying this one, and the compared quality definitely was part of why I couldn't do this.
