Also, I'm reading it when I'm hungry and that makes me wish I had bear kabobs. - hoppysailrRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0RC Joshua brings us back to the action with another cooking adjacent protagonist!
All of his books are grounded in their worlds and the characters feel realistic. Ive been reading on Patreon since the release and Im excited for yet another great adventure! Slice of life, action, adventure? What doesn't this man do well!! - Dr.WaterproofRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5What else can I say? After reading multiple stories from this author, all I can say is that he is consistently able to put out novels that entertain and delight. From adventure to slice of life, anything that Josh puts out is something that will keep you hooked from the first chapter. I'm now reading two books of his simultaneously, and both are satisfying in their own way.
This novel is fun in that we're technically starting from zero (the war is over) but you can see where MC previous experience comes into play. Pacing is good without feeling rushed, and the stakes are realistic for the scope of the novel. Just another solid story all around for R.C., and I'm really loving this focus on community that has been a common thread for both the current novels I'm reading (The other one is the Archmage is Baking). Give both of these a follow, and then maybe read of of the others as well. There's plenty that at least one will peak your interest. - Ashen ImmortalRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Truly interesting. I don't usually watch many works like this—ones that revolve around food or feature a protagonist who gains strength by eating. I believe that, aside from this one, I've only ever seen one other such series—though I can't recall its title. It followed the same premise, except in that one, the protagonist had to carve up the monsters while they were still alive; if they died, the monster would simply melt away, leaving nothing behind but a crystal.
- November WoodRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Unlike other stories where the protagonist is a “lowly” chef or some sort of gourmet, in this tale, our hero inadvertently gets the “Monster Chef” unique class and part of the deal is that he has to kill, cook and consume monsters to advance. This storyline has a lovely town-building social aspect where people need to strengthen each other to survive and it becomes a found family situation. Enjoying it immensely.
- TsukimaruRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Good story, some information is not concistent (like the dextery stat being changed to skill andthe name of the class changed and some minor other things) that in my opinion breaks me of the experience.
System related could be better planned some names like butchering could be changed to knife handling that would make more sense.
All in all is good just the points noted remove a liitle of the fun in reading. - Carl AntuarRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0RC Joshua seems to have quite a few food-centric stories :D Can't say a lot at chapter 1, I'll update this later, but it's a decent opening: the MC's behavior is consistent with his backstory as a soldier (weak at the moment, but doesn't panic at the sight of danger), and his class has setup for potentially interesting development, particularly the restrictions.
- Caesura16Royal Road★★★★ 3.5So far the book is good. The characters are believable, the plot is nice, and the story, while faster than suits my personal tastes, is progressing nicely. However, the main downfall is that the author has (so far) been non-responsive to comments. This isn’t a bad thing in and of itself. I fully understand why authors may choose to ignore requests, stylistic advice, and opinions about where the book should go. However, the majority of comments are pointing out either grammar mistakes, or plot inconsistencies. Grammar mistakes are fair, I understand the author has goals they are attempting to reach, and I genuinely hope they reach them.
However, when there are repeated inconsistencies with the system, as well as character and object permanence, it becomes frustrating to read. When there has been no acknowledgement from the author, nor details about when/if edits will occur, it presents the image the author does not care about their own work - and if so, why should the reader?
Even an author’s comment acknowledging the problem would be greatly appreciated, but there has been none.
(Two spoiler free examples of the above include 1, a character being surprised the second time they hear a piece of news, and 2, the MC losing several pieces of equipment in a permanent way, only for those pieces of equipment to appear again in the next chapter)
This has the potential to become a wonderful book, but it needs some TLC on its foundations. When that happens, my review will gladly rise higher, but until then it stays here where it is. - Three StepsRoyal Road★★ 2.0The writing and story of the novel seems promising but it requires a full edit to adress consistency and dialouge issues. Examples from first three chapters:
The stat points from the very first level up are miscalculated (he has 13 points in dex - ten base, one from the meal and two from level up - but only 12 on the panel). The main character tells the gate guard at the start that he fought a monster without a class but the guard is shocked and suprised in the next chapter when he repeats this information.
Inconsistenies like the ones listed above break immersion and the novel reads like a first draft. Seeing such glaring issues with consistency at the very start of the novel where everything is at its most simpl doesen't bode well for overall quality. The starting chapters are meant to engage you in the novel but read like filler to position the main character in the situation the author desires. A full edit would signifiantly improve the quality of the novel.
