- luda305Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is an interesting one. It's very well written, with a great deal of depth to the background, characters and plot. Indeed, I strongly suspect that I've missed a lot in my first read through that I wouldn't pick up unless I read it again.
There's not much on the box, but the story is what it says on the box.
A witch couple (yes, romantic couple) discover a strange artifact deep in the forests in a post-post-apocalyptic era (one of them has a motorbike). Perhaps related to the artifact (perhaps not), the older, more powerful of the two begins to experience vivid, terrifying nightmares. The horror comes from the fact that it's hard to tell whether they are truely dreams, or whether (a) there's some alternate reality shenanigans, or (b) they are repressed memories from earlier in her life and the young witch might not really exist.
The romance tag appears to largely come down to a moral about the importance of communication in relationships. Oddly, the story seems to end on that note, with the affected protagonist promising to tell the other everything. While that note makes sense if it occurred in the middle or three-quarter mark of a story, ending on it is... a bit flat?
So, like I said, it's very well written and there's a lot to unpack. That said, did I even enjoy it enough the first time to re-read it? Well, no. It's very good, and I'm glad I read it, but there's a really high bar for something to be worthy of a re-read. That said, I do recommend reading it, though perhaps I would suggest to take your time doing so.
