The System Seas [LitRPG, Pirate]

Description
Marco trained his whole life for one thing: to become a captain. He maxed every childhood achievement the System would let him, from diving to rigging to outrunning couriers up mountains. But when classing day finally comes, the system doesn’t just make him a captain. It makes him a Gluttonous Marauder. On the plus side, it’s a unique class with combat perks, shipwright skills, and captain material. On the negative side, it comes with a reputation so bad he’s arrested on the spot. Now on the run in a barely seaworthy smuggler’s dinghy, Marco sets out to prove he’s not the villain they think he is. Unfortunately, he first needs to out-sail bounty hunters, survive cursed dungeons, and feed enough victories to his ever-growing ship to outrun every danger thrown his way.

Read up to most recent chp release. - Dr.WaterproofRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Once again our author here jumps into a new story and delivers a great novel that you can actually finish in a realistic timeframe. Power is gained without feeling unearned, characters are solid and have great motivations, and plenty of adventures to be had. It's a solid story story that won't disappoint.
- JeraRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As a fan of ‘system’ novels, and as a nerd who loves learning the intricacies of different worlds and magic systems, this story holds the potential to be one of the best. Based off of previous works by this author, you can be sure to expect a fully thought out and well used system that won’t just be a table of numbers that makes it easier to show how strong someone is. Im excited to see how the characters progress and how the world expands as this goes on!
- JiodomRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There’s no need to beat around the bush: this fiction is fantastic. It’s one of those rare stories that grips you from the first chapter and never lets go not because it relies on shock twists or cheap drama, but because every element is crafted with creativity. At the heart of the story is Marco, a young MC who wants to become a captain. Unlike many LitRPG or Progression Fantasy, the System here isn’t just a backdrop or a game-like mechanic. It’s embedded in the laws, the society, and even the politics of the world, shaping everything from a person's career to their morality in the eyes of the law. People are judged by their class, limited by it, and in some cases, outright punished for it. Marco is one of these people, but he will find a way to get by.The progression is deeply satisfying. Leveling up matters, but so do decisions, relationships, and reputation. Marco doesn’t just get stronger; he gets smarter, more strategic, and gradually grows into a leader worth following. Around him, a small crew begins to form, each member uniquely shaped by their class and backstory. Their synergy feels organic, and the way they interact with the world (and its limitations) is consistently compelling. And then there’s the ship. It’s practically a character in its own right. It evolves with the crew, gains abilities, and becomes central for their survival. The nautical setting adds a fresh twist to the usual dungeon-and-castle fantasy, giving the story room to explore themes like freedom, exploration, and isolation, while still providing space for tense battles and dangerous environments.Above all, the writing is sharp and efficient. The humor lands when it needs to. The pacing is tight. Every chapter moves the plot forward without feeling rushed or bloated. And just when you think you know where it’s going, something shifts and you’re pulled deeper into the world.I’m at chapter 25 and genuinely invested in every character, every decision, and every strange corner of this world
- Lightning_godRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So, disclaimer, I've read a previous title by this author, The Infinite Dungeon, and I noticed that this title has some similar flaws.
I thought this novel was a lot better, and I enjoyed both. They both have this attitude to worldbuilding which is annoying. Where are the details! Everything is described in incredibly vague terms at times, which, for a genre where part of the enjoyment is the visual spectacle,... annoying. Also, hardly anything has names. Large numbers of the enemies are mostly nameless.
This novel was clearly heavily inspired by one piece, but its unfortunately pretty surface-level. Some of the plot is vaguely the same (but thankfully different enough, I still enjoyed it), but I really wish they'd copied more of the style. They are clearly trying to build up members of the crew to similar heights of power and personality, but it's not working for me.
One piece has a huge ensemble cast, and the way they get around luffy not solving all their problems is the individual battles. They give depth to characters and let them show off their latest cool move/power-up. In this story, everyone is mostly locked together and they always take out the main bad guy like it's a boss battle. Everyone takes turns, and they all hit them like a hundred times. You gotta give characters room to breathe.
The Author secretly hates LitRPGs.
I believe this with all my heart. Its almost the end of book 2, and I have no idea what level the Main Character was, no idea what level the big boss was, no idea what level his companions were. In universe, whenever the mc has to check his notifications hes always super annoyed, because he hates power? He even says at one point that it's just not exciting anymore. Like why? This guy spent 16 years obsessing over his class, and now he just can't be bothered? They live in a LitRPG world, and nobody seems to care about levels. I really think the author just hates writing LitRPGs. I think that all of the MC's skills should be higher, but I' - anaustralianwriterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Honestly, it's a really good story. Not quite five stars, but giving it that anyway to boost the story a little, lmao. Our MC is kinda dumb, but that seems to be more for exposition than anything. Using the MC as a foil to explain the base mechanics of the story. Once the world is fully explained properly, I can see him being bumped up in intelligence. He's hard working, and honestly a good guy. I'm happy to see that he isn't just another edgelord doing everything by himself as his harem of crew members cheer him on.
While our MC is stronger than the rest of the crew, that doesn't mean they don't do their fair share. The crew have their own skills and are clearly going to be vital to our MC's success in more ways than just a cheer squad. I am a little bit worried about the extremely traumatised elf basically just throwing herself at our MC, but from what I've seen so far from this author tells me that it will be handled with care. - YtachRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The quality of what you can expect from an RC story holds up fine with this one.
It's too early to say that everything is fleshed out and the characters are well written, because I don't know what this book holds for us. But given the experiences from his earlier works, I have no doubt that we're in for a wild ride, unexpected twists, adventures that will leave you on the edge of your seat and an overall fair system instance that has to work hard to keep up with whatever this MC starts cooking.
Occasionally you may find a slight typo, which is very understandable, given the pace with which RC pumps out these books. I believe that with the MC's name, autocorrect will throw a few more in. In general though, the writing is consistent, clear and without errors.
There's nothing I can say against the characters, other than they sometimes choose differently than I would. Then again, I would probably lead a very quiet life that could hardly be considered worthy of writing down. So it's probably for the better that they sometimes go with a more risky route.
All in all: I'm definitely in for the ride, and I'm curious where our captain will lead us. - Ezr4ekRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story will really grip you right from the start, as you follow along with what essentially amounts to cabin boy Goku and bookish Bulma. This isn't to take away from the tale though, for the adventure that has begun to unfold promises to deliver excitement akin to that very series referenced in my review. The crew will quickly fill out in a similar pace to One Piece - another series which seems a kindred spirit to The System Seas.
Style: The action is fast-paced, and the author has a great way to plant little details that could bud into further content down the road. Each scenario that the group encounters so far has lasted to juuuust the right length of time, and it never feels like a drag to get on to the "next thing."
Story: As mentioned in the description - it is a kindred soul to the greats like One Piece, but with a LitRPG twist. I'm thoroughly enjoying the "good pirate" trope, and can't wait to see where the crew will get up to next or in what way the MC will be able to use the more unique perks of his class to take us where the winds may (or may not - you'll see ~) blow.
Grammar: No real complaints here. A onesie-twosie thing here and there, but nothing to take you out of the tale or detract from the enjoyment.
Character: Probably the one slightly rough patch. The side characters seem to be pretty fantastic, but the MC is a little... flat. He's super strong, super talented, and super dense to the point his friends have to guide him along - nothing new here, and it really screams "Luffy fell into a LitRPG", but I'm not necessarily mad at it - just looking forward to seeing if he develops beyond this. - HaveRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story is quite enjoyable to read, its first few chapters immediately hooked me and it has maintained the same quality ever since. I love that the system isn't just number go up, and is more fleshed out rather than usual litrpgs. The adventures has been intersting thus far and im looking forward to more
Only problem I have is that character motivations are rather shallow and the story is a bit unrealistic at times, even for a fantasy genre.
Overall, still a good read for a cozy adventure
