Description

In 1962, rifts tore open across the Earth and the Pale Choir spilled into reality. With their song came resonance and harmony: death, and the erasure of the self. Half a year later, the Luminaries—beings of pure light and defenders of this Universe—bestowed Essentia upon humanity and chose those who would wield it. The world would come to know them as Magical Girls. For decades, these champions have held back extinction. None are more revered than Golden Promise, the strongest Magical Girl to ever live, the axis upon which humanity’s survival now turns. And although the world does revolve around her, this story is not mainly about her. It is about the despair that comes with the loss of purpose, and how to rebuild oneself from nothing. About usurping a life already ongoing, so fragile and precious, and building upon it brick by brick. About learning to live for oneself. Siena Marquez is a new Magical Girl who has never had a chance to learn how to live, but something about her has been off lately and she seems to be undergoing rapid change shedoes notwant people to notice. This story is about the monster inside of her. A dark psychological cosmic horror romance about identity, grief, and the terrifying freedom of choosing who you are when someone has already decided what you should be—but also about two girls who might just need a break from everything finding each other. While readerscanandshouldexpect action, this is not the main point of this book.A general warning: this story will contain character deaths and a healthy amount of suffering.Update schedule: twice a week unless stated otherwise (Wednesday, Sunday) - Thank you to my proofreaderSuzuka! As I write this review there are only 5 chapters released, but the story already shows a lot of potential.
The characters are already a highlight. The main character, Siena, has struggles both human and alien that are all easy to relate to. The despondency from losing what you centered your life around is familiar to me and represented well here. She hasn't figured out a new purpose yet, but I'm excited for when she does.
Her brother is written in a way that endears him, at least to me, remarkably quickly. He's well set up to be the emotional foundation of at least these early story arcs, and whether his ending is happy or sad, I know it'll be moving.
Most fascinating of all, though, are Siena's counterparts, Keisha and Megan, the way all three respond so differently to such a similar situation makes clear a depth of character their backgrounds wouldn't suggest. How all three will manage the stress of their long mission will be interesting to see, even if I suspect most of their plans will go up in flames.
As for the plot, it's a magical girl story done in a way I haven't seen before. Unlike many subversions of the genre, the monsters are definitely bad, inherently terrifying, and likely impossible to bargain with. The powers behind magical girls seem at the very least a much better option. Instead its twisted into something like a spy thriller, where our main character must navigate being on both sides, wanted by neither. The overall trajectory of the story seems clear for now, but the path remains uncertain and captivating.
To be frank, though, the main reason I'm writing this review is because I know the author's work. She wrote one of my favorite books, and my favorite fanfiction bar none, I Will Touch the Skies.
It can be hard to guess which webfiction will keep going, will make it to the end of the story. I fully believe this one will. I Will Touch the Skies is the longest completed story I've read, and while I don't how long Soussouni plans False Note to be,

A very good introduction to a story that's shaping up to be very interesting. Absolutely loved Golden Promise even if she won't really be the main character.
Very interested to see what our resident aliens will do in the future, loved the different reactions by each monster depending on the girl they took over.

The writing style is really solid. There’s no awkward phrasing, the prose flows naturally, and the pacing keeps the reader consistently engaged. The sentences feel polished and purposeful, which makes the story easy and enjoyable to read without ever feeling forced or overly complicated.
I haven’t caught any grammatical errors, so there’s nothing that disrupts the reading experience. The technical cleanliness of the writing really helps maintain immersion, allowing the reader to stay focused on the story rather than being pulled out by mistakes or clunky wording.
The cast is very diverse, and everyone has a distinct personality. There are no stereotypes or clichés so far, which makes the characters feel authentic and believable. Each character has their own voice, motivations, and emotional depth, and their interactions feel natural rather than scripted. It’s easy to tell them apart, and that individuality makes the dynamics between them much more engaging. The author has already proven that they handle character writing very well in their last story and this story seems just as promising.
Overall, the combination of strong prose, smooth readability, and well-crafted characters makes the story feel very promising. It already shows a lot of care and attention to detail, and it definitely leaves me excited to see where it goes next.
