- AsteriskAceRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story grabbed me from the first chapter and never let go. Simply said, it's an unflinching tale of survival against all odds.
From the opening scenes in Purple City's underbelly, we're introduced to Lux, whose dual life as "Sam" immediately drew me in. Lux's devotion to her sister Mitty creates an emotional anchor that makes every risk, fight, and sacrifice feel genuinely meaningful. However, what makes this story really stand out is how the author doesn't pull punches, which I'm very much a fan of.
Lux's powers are portrayed with all its disturbing implications while maintaining her humanity throughout.
The worldbuilding is exceptional. Purple City feels alive with its oppressive purple (haha) aesthetic, corrupt officials, and stark class divisions. The author crafts this setting with such tangible detail that I could smell the filthy alleys and feel the weight of constant danger. The magic system is both disturbing and fascinating, so unique compared to other progression fantasies I've read.
The action scenes, prose, and grammar are well refined and speak of high production and a lot of thought put into crafting a truly engaging story. The author truly is talented, and their story is a testament to that; they excel at making moments simultaneously thrilling and unsettling without ever feeling gratuitous.
If you enjoy dark fantasy with heart, genuine stakes, and a protagonist walking the knife edge between monster and hero, you absolutely need to read this story. - cyanobacteriaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I rarely write reviews, but this novel instantly captivated me with its unique and cruel world-building. As a "terrible" reader (I might unfollow after finishing a novel), I want to try and promote this story a bit, as it at least deserves slightly better stats.Firstly, the protagonist Lux's "Devour" ability is both novel and filled with tragic undertones. Her growth is always accompanied by inner struggles and a deep longing for her sister Mitty; the characterization is well done. The story's pacing is good. This novel is indeed very dark, accompanied by a lot of black humor and a core of madness. It's a world I definitely wouldn't want to transmigrate into.Character development isn't flat; apart from a few slightly exaggerated characters, the rest are very vivid. At least you recognize who they are, not just remember their names.Combat scenes are described fluently and imaginatively. Sometimes the fight sequences can be a bit lengthy, and the action descriptions might occasionally feel a little dragged out.The power system lacks some refinement. The specific ability tiers of "Grace Bathers" and the diversity of magic aren't elaborated on much. Of course, I don't like info-dumping descriptions, but I suggest dedicating a chapter to outline these. The "one sentence per paragraph" format is used as much as possible, but in sections requiring delicate emotional descriptions, atmosphere building, or complex psychological portrayals, overly frequent line breaks can affect reading fluency and expressive power. This needs some improvement.Overall, this is a work with great potential, possessing a solid foundation and an engaging core story. By polishing and deepening the aspects mentioned above, I believe it can attract more readers and become an impressive and excellent fantasy novel. Looking forward to your future work.
- 123ABCRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This novel really drew me in with its interesting blend of Japanese light novel style and dark fantasy elements.
While the initial hook might have lacked immediate excitement for me, the story quickly picks up pace and dives into significant plot turns. I appreciate how clear the main storyline is, and the characters are distinct and well-developed – which is excellent development.
The interactions between Lux and Emily are a particular highlight; they're both humorous and adorable. The MC is also a very engaging character.
It's notably refreshing that this isn't a typical RITRPG-style story. Discovering a novel on Royal Road that focuses so well on pure plot and character development like this one does is a genuine and pleasant surprise. I'm definitely enjoying it! - NolzenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0At its essence, this story is about surviving the harshness of Purple City, focusing on somewhat realistic aspects of it, such as what it takes for a girl to survive in such unforgiving conditions. The story is paced beautifully with tender moments of respite mixed into a fast-paced action packed story that provides a masterclass of an emotional rollercoaster.
Story:
It is about Lux, trying to survive in this somewhat harsh, magical Purple City with her sister. The story manages to take great plot directions that blend natural world-building and high-octane, well-described action sequences.
Style:
The prose is a wondrous mix of descriptive writing, organic world-building and well-thought-out character interactions. They bring out a mood that pretty much embodies what Purple City is supposed to feel like.
While there might be a few run-on sentences, they do not impact readability at all.
Grammar:
Well-written. No error too noticeable.
Characters:
Lux, being the main character, is obviously the character that stands out the most. She is not one-dimensional. She has her own emotional struggles, a complicated and fleshed-out personality, and her power.
The other characters in the story are also intriguing. Mitty provides an interesting childlike innocence that contrasts well with the sin-riddled Purple City.

Overall, I am very intrigued by the premise of the story and would love to see where it goes in the future. - CapwallcroftRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm just going to say it,
RIP mitty, mitty was done dirty, mitty could have survived she better reverse engineer that flower on god fr fr
Okay! A little bit of graphic content here beware. My time doing review swaps has shielded me from the world but we've got an interesting fiction here with lots of potential!!
First off, this is a good writer, you know how you read a book and you like can instantly tell if someone is a good writer? if someone can actually transport you into that world? We'll this one is really damn good. This is professional level and this is without a doubt quite fun. It's like spiderman but if there was no spiders and no man and magic and dubious morals.
Sorry I don't know what to say but that's the best way to explain it. Lux is a great character and the author does well to make this not seemed forced and flow well. There should be more imagery and some better descriptors however this is more of an action and adventure enjoyable fiction than some heavy drudgery!
The Devouring Curse: An Epic of Maidens' Divine Rebellion is a dark fantasy web novel hosted on Royal Road. It follows Lux, a young woman who, after a tragic event involving her younger sister Mitty, embarks on a perilous journey in a world dominated by indifferent gods. The narrative delves into themes of grief, identity, and resistance against divine tyranny.
Strengths:
Atmospheric World-Building: The story presents a grim and immersive setting where the gods' whims distort reality, creating a backdrop filled with despair and oppression. Also amazing style like really damn good style, flows quite well and makes for a great read!!!
Character Development: Lux's transformation from a protective sibling to a determined protagonist is portrayed with emotional depth, highlighting her resilience and complexity. Yes there is ACTUAL character development, I know right? yeah this is just that good that it actually has character development. Now okay I admit some chapters like there needs to be - Apollo149Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The Devouring Curse kicks off with strong worldbuilding and keeps things moving from there. It follows Lux, a morally grey girl hiding under the name “Sam,” as she tries to survive in the gritty, violet-lit streets of Purple City. Right from the start, the story throws you into a world full of danger, curses, and strange powers, but it never feels overwhelming. You learn as you go, and it’s easy to get hooked by the mystery and tension in Lux’s world.
The pacing is really well done. Some chapters are packed with action, curses flying and characters scrambling to survive, while others slow down to focus on emotional moments—especially between Lux and her younger sister, Mitty. That relationship is the heart of the story and gives it real weight. Lux is easy to root for, even when she makes questionable choices, because her love for Mitty is so clear and believable. The writing itself is clean and smooth, with vivid descriptions that bring the dark, eerie settings to life without feeling too wordy or complicated.
Lux and Mitty feel like real people, and their bond is touching. On the other side, the villains—Rio and Pony—are definitely creepy, but their over-the-top madness can feel a little too exaggerated at times. A bit more subtlety could make them more believable and threatening. Still, the book does a great job blending the vibe of a Japanese light novel with darker fantasy elements. It’s intense, emotional, and just plain cool. If you’re into curses, messed-up cities, and flawed but lovable characters, this is one to check out. - TakeoMasaki889Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall, I enjoyed the first 5 chapters of this book. The author has some fresh ideas, which I hadn't seen before. Here are the different categories:
Style: The writing is detailed and imaginative. The author clearly put a lot of thought into the setting and powers in each scene. Sometimes the descriptions are a bit too long or dramatic, which can interrupt the flow of action or dialogue. There's a bit too much exposure for my taste, with the author simply telling you what's happening, and not showing you. With some editing to make the prose more concise, the story would be easier to read and more impactful.
Characters: Lux and Mitty feel real and relatable. Their relationship is touching and central to the story. Lux’s struggle to protect her sister is believable and makes her easy to care about. The villains, Rio and Pony, are scary and unsettling, but their descriptions and dialogue lean heavily into a cartoonish madman trope. Toning that down slightly could make him more effective and serious.
Story: The best part of this book. The chapters are well structured and the worldbuilding is great. The author creates real tension and has very well-written action scenes. The pacing is good, but the tone shifts sometimes too quickly from emotional to violent and grotesque to funny and back again.
Grammar: Generally solid, but there are moments where the sentence structure could be improved. Some lines are repetitive and the dialogue gets confusing from time to time, as I'm not sure who's talking. A round of editing would help the text read more smoothly and improve it by 0.5 points. - exSiftingRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This story offers a compelling narrative built on a solid foundation of thoughtful world-building and character-driven tension. While the early chapters lean a bit heavily on exposition, it’s a forgivable impulse—orienting readers in a new world is no easy feat. Fortunately, the setting quickly proves itself to be grounded, well-constructed, and immersive, with just enough detail to spark curiosity without bogging down the pace for long.
The real strength lies in the characters, especially the protagonist. She’s capable and flawed, with clear motivations that keep the story moving and make her choices feel earned. Supporting characters also stand out, each with unique personalities and roles that go beyond archetypes. There’s a sense that every character is living their own life off the page.
Some of the fight scenes can be a little hard to follow, and the writing would benefit from another round of editing—grammatical issues occasionally distract from otherwise strong storytelling. But these are fixable details in an otherwise promising work.
Overall, this story shows real potential. With a bit more polish, it could evolve into something truly special. If you're looking for a character-rich, lore-heavy read with heart, it's definitely worth giving a shot. - AddictednovelicRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0First of all, the story is very thrilling. It keeps you off your feet, wondering what will happen next. This is something no matter author or reader will like.
From the corpse collector, purple city, the awesome fights with the demon hunters, mitty dying, the world destroying fire, meeting the mysterious man, etc. All of it was in sync, no off the point events, pointless dialogue, and inconsistent's.
Besides that, I see no problem with the style. It perfectly suits the novel. The author did a very good job.
As for the main character, Lux is very good. This includes all aspects of her. Whether it's being family bound, a unique op ability, a very mysterious past, etc. If anything, it keeps a reader engaged.
Also, from my point of view, the grammar has no issues. Everything seems to be in order.
The world building seem pretty solid too. Even though I seen a corner, I can see in the future it will gradually expand.
All in all, it is a pretty interesting novel. I will continue reading. I want to see what else she will devour lol. I wish your novel continue to do well with a high-five. - DuskDoveRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0There is huge room for improvement for the author. I believe the story hook at the start is weak compared to the novels I have read.
The author's narrative voice is not really that developed. It can improve and the story has immense potential.
The author needs to improve on showing rather than telling. There is a lot of telling going on but not much showing.
