The Descent of a Star || <星雪降世> Xing Xue Jiang Shi

Lai XingXue was the unfavored second prince of Laixu. He was considered astain on the name of the prestigious royal family. Shoved into the darkness of the palace, he became a useless bastard synonymous with bad luck.

But everything changed when he met his Master. Shen QuanLi had been a half step to immortality, lofty and frigid, but he was the only person in the entire world who would spare the second prince a shred of kindness.

Lai XingXue was ready to give Shen QuanLi everything he could. He won martial competitions to win his Master the glory he deserved, he cleared his name and became a prince his Master could be proud of. As he cultivated closer to immortality, Lai XingXue believed: maybe one day, once he was powerful enough, competent enough, he could confess his unfilial thoughts to his Master.

But then Shen QuanLi died.

Lai XingXue had once decided to give his everything to his Master, the one person who had brought him out of the darkness.

Thus, even if it meant cutting off his own future, Lai XingXue will defy the fates to bring Shen QuanLi back!

For the record, this is the first cultivation story I've read, and I enjoyed this one a lot.
I'm uncertain about how the "magic system" typically works in this genre, but I like that it's kept somewhat of a mystery, at least initially. There isn't too much time spent on the specific mechanics of it, rather we are dropped in with the characters having already learned how it works, and so we get to see it in action.
I haven't met many characters yet, but our two MCs so far are delightful together. For a master/disciple relationship the author could have taken a more stern dynamic, but they chose what feels like a wholesome route and it's actually refreshing. Both characters seem to genuinely care about each other early on, Lai XingXue having a lot of reverence for his master and Shen QuanLi seeing a lot of potential in his disciple, despite XingXue's association with bad luck.
Occasionally there is a word or phrase that doesn't seem to fit. Without revealing who says it or when, there is a character who says "Hey! Let me go!" Which feels like a very modern and odd choice for that specific character, and briefly took me out of what was an otherwise exciting encounter. Other than that the grammar was good. There is some cleaning up to be done in certain spots, but nothing too noteworthy.
I like the direction the author seems to be taking their world and characters, and this being my first cultivation novel, I'm loving the feel of it. The author really seems to care about it as well, as they include helpful terms and explanations at the beginning and end of the chapters, as sometimes I had to slow down and remember that each character typically has two names they are referred to as.
The author also includes a map, and some extra information about the world in an attempt to flesh it out more, and I love that. Readers who are into cultivation stories will very much appreciate it.

I enjoy the interactions between Shen Quanli and Lai Xingxue - they're cute, hilarious and endearing. The plot and conflicts are unique, something I haven't seen in Xianxia books before (though granted I haven't read a lot). I think adding more description on the context would be good to put the reader into the scene.

I have an instinctual dislike towards those tropes. Yet... brain detects BL warning. Brain wants to read. And while I haven't gotten to the good stuff, I see plenty of set-ups that will show up later in story. I foresee it. And if that doesn't happen? I will be very sad.
Personalites are pretty decent. About the level I had hoped for. Grammar is fine enough too. 4.5/5

This is a rather serious and more traditionally written Xianxia novel. Anyone who is a fan of Danmei(I am assuming it is based on the synopsis and the first three chapters) genre and is familiar with how various plot devices usually work in Xianxia novels is probably going to enjoy this very much.
This is a more specialised work and may not be for everyone. But being a long time reader of Xianxia novels, I think that the writing style is pretty good and the story, cultivation method seems interesting up to this point.
