The Dark Lord's Redemption

Description

Victory... was the second worst thing to happen to you.

The power of love and friendship was not enough. The plucky band of unlikely heroes failed. The prophesied child and the chosen of all the gods both fell beneath your mace, along with all their successors.

There was no last-second intervention or clever scheme revealed in the final moment to bring about your downfall.

The whole world tried to stop you. The whole world failed. You reign supreme, from now until the end of time should you wish it.

So why does it feel so empty?

This is a, more or less, slice-of-life tale of a dark lord who succeeded in all his schemes, inevitably realising that he was wrong and travelling forward into a future that has mostly forgotten him to seek out why. Set in a classically stagnant fantasy world that has recovered from the many calamities unleashed upon it.

It is told from a 2nd person perspective of said dark lord, as well as occasional 3rd person interludes of other characters to put things into context. It will mostly be in the present tense, but I'd ask for some patience and help pointing out where I'm going wrong because I have a bad habit of glazing over it sometimes.

Mostly, I intend for this to be a slow, but wholesome realisation for the dark lord of what is truly important in life. Of course, this necessitates for him to be a truly foul individual from the get-go, you are not supposed to 'like' him straight away. However, there will no doubt be some humorous moments as well as some very serious ones, with a splash of action here and there.

I would like to say that the main characters' views, especially in the beginning, do not necessarily represent my own.

I am aiming for around ten thousand words per chapter, and about a chapter a week.

This will probably be quite a long story.

No ai was used in the making of this fiction, except for the cover art.

I will be crossposting this to spacebattles.com

I'm genuinely surprised this doesn't have more views/reviews.
A very refreshing read compared to most of the novels i've read recently. It is very well written, and the second person is used to great effect, making the writing a tad more personal and allowing much more of the characters' reflections and psychology to shine through.
The characters are well developped, lifelike, and each is interesting in their own rights. The story has been good so far and takes it time to pace revelations and intrigue (i'm only basing this on the first 7 chapters, though they are quite chunky).
I expected an edgy story, full of common tropes and was surprised to find that it gave me the tingly and warm feelings that reading stories about people doing their best in their day to day life always gives. It is heart-warming to see the equivalent of an Archmage Hitler try to be a better person after winning the war and erasing most life.
The comfortable and retrospective vibes this story has are matched by few novels i've read, and the psychology aspect of it is definitely doing some of the heavy lifting for my appreciation of the book.
Small edit : magic system is also very nice, exposition on it is done just the way i like through some passing comments etc. And holy shit does the story know how to also feel epic, the fights are veeery well written.
I'm very hopeful and hyped for the rest of the novel,
    Thank you for writing.
