Born of privilege, Alaric has little to fear in his day-to-day life. Bare of magical aptitude, his inborn focus drawn incomplete, Alaric doesn't even participate in the battle for the throne.

His siblings compete for the crown to their own peril. The king ignores him. The queen pretends to care for what he does, but only to save face.

So he whittles his days away in all the right places. Alaric watches his siblings' slaughter rare and mythical beasts in the colosseum. He ignores the plots that kill his brothers and sisters. He attends gatherings and lives in the background. He even spends his spare time in the capitals' libraries, showing the appropriate respect for knowledge.

Of course, no man was that simple. No man held so little ambition.

If he found what he was looking for, who could say? Perhaps Alaric was the kind of man that preferred to hold the world in the palm of his hand... No matter what it took.
