- OneDropRainRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0From the very first chapter, this story draws you in with a mix of camaraderie, competition, and an undercurrent of mystery. Ryan is a strong and relatable protagonist while Kyle’s evolution from cocky antagonist to layered ally adds real emotional depth. Their relationship forms the narrative’s core, with Aaron’s humor and Thayar’s strength rounding out a cast that’s distinctive, well-developed, and enjoyable to follow.
The competition setting is imaginative and full of potential, providing a steady flow of tense challenges and unexpected twists. Just when the rhythm feels familiar, the introduction of a genuinely unsettling antagonist shifts the story into darker territory, keeping the stakes high and the tension fresh. This tonal pivot works well, balancing lighter moments of character interaction with a growing sense of danger.
Pacing alternates between quieter character-driven beats and bursts of high-stakes action. While some transitions feel quicker than expected, the story maintains a consistent momentum that suits the overall plot. Dialogue is generally strong, even if a few exchanges could be tightened for greater impact. The prose shows occasional rough edges, but the clarity, charm, and energy more than compensate—especially impressive considering English is not the author’s first language.
Overall, this is an engaging start with a lot of heart, balancing warmth, humor, and tension effectively. If the character arcs continue to develop alongside the unfolding mystery, this story has the potential to become a standout in its genre and keep readers invested throughout. - Steve RockRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This book has a fun and interesting introduction. Its characters are endearing and its setting is nice. The book wastes no time before diving in and introducing a couple of mysterious elements that I am excited to learn more about. Dialogue is good but not great. Prose is a bit clunky, but very good for someone who doesn't have English as their first language.
Will leave a more complete review later. - longwindedone1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I listened to the Strange New World by Light_2 using the RR app. I listened to Act 1. Chapter 1 to I Act 1. Chapter 6. I apologize for any spoilers that this review may contain.
Style
The writing has a clarity that makes it easy to immerse yourself in Ryan and Kyle’s world. While English isn’t the author’s first language, the writing is polished, with dialogue that flows naturally. The mix of warmth, humor, and creeping unease works beautifully.
Story
From the very first chapter, we’re introduced to Ryan and his small circle of friends, and then thrown into an unexpected turn with Kyle. Their bond forms the emotional core of the story. Around them, the plot grows darker, with many dangers (poisonous swarms, strange dogs, and a shadowy family). The competition and survival elements add some nice tension.
Grammar
I thought maybe there were some bumps in the road on this category, but it could have just been the AI voice that the app uses (when listening). I was never distracted from the narrative.
Character
Ryan is a wonderfully kind and grounded character. Kyle’s character arc is particularly well done. The dynamic between the two is the highlight of the book. Supporting characters like Rock, Dell, Zam, and Asper add all of the ingredients for perfect supporting characters.
This is an incredibly promising debut. The camaraderie of the characters make this story a standout. If the character arcs keep growing and the mystery deepens, this will absolutely become one of the best ongoing reads in the genre. Highly recommended—five stars. - NoarRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story has a fantastic blend of fun, character-driven moments and a compelling, dark mystery. I've been hooked since the beginning! The author does a brilliant job of establishing a world that feels normal before twisting it into something more sinister. The characters are the real strength here, led by a great protagonist, Ryan, and his co-star, Kyle. Their friendship is the emotional core of the story, and the way Kyle's character evolves from an arrogant rival into a complex hero is brilliant. The rest of the team, especially the clever Aaron and the strong Thayar, are just as unforgettable and make the group dynamic a joy to read. The competition itself is a creative and exciting premise, and the introduction of a chilling villain adds a terrifying new layer to the plot. While the pacing from the quieter moments to the high-stakes action can feel a little quick at times, it keeps you on your toes. I'm so invested in where this is all going, and I can't wait to see how you pull it all off! 💛
