Saga of the Storm Wizard

Description
Rose Cooper had always been told she has a lot of potential as a wizard cadet. Too much, in fact; her weather magic frequently ran wild when her emotions got the better of her.
That was why the mission to uncover a lost magical artifact in the Spratly Islands was perfect for her. They were no man's land, abandoned by both the demonic Grim Horde and the human Anti-Demonic League. All Rose would have to do to do was keep the weather under control. All of that talk of the Spratly Curse was just superstition and nonsense spread by bored sailors.
If only. Evil wore many masks, as Rose was about to discover.
Warning: This story contains elements that some readers may find disturbing, and minor language. Think of it as a PG-13 rating.
This series is a spinoff of the Confessions of the Magpie Wizard series. As such, it contains spoilers for the main series. I have attempted to write it so that you could start here without reading the original story. You can also check it out here: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/27872/confessions-of-the-magpie-wizard/

- luda305Royal Road★★★★ 3.5Stripping away the set-dressing, it's a YA romance with a smattering of magic and adventure. But it has its fair share of problems.
First, the protagonist is deeply unlikeable. She comes across as an emotionally unstable problem child with a predilection to destruction. There's a bit of an anti-hero air to her, but most anti-heroes have a likeability to them that colors that fact that they're willing to kill or commit atrocities for the greater good. The protagonist here instead comes across as immature, especially in the confrontation of her parents where she reinforces that her parents made the correct decision regarding her.
Second, the plot takes a long time to get going because we keep getting distracted by side quests.
There's her brother dying and it being kept a secret from her, with that and the emotional fallout taking several chapters, and has some weird romance all tied up into it. Then there's a side trip to go shopping and coral reef diving, which really just stinks of westerner describes going on vacation to an "exotic" locale.
On top of that, for a while, it seems like the whole book is going to revolve around the romance, but there's a deus ex monstra which puts us back on plot.
Some positives. The worldbuilding is fairly deep and well thought out. The characters are well defined and distinct. The grammar is impeccable. And the style on a small and medium scale is fairly good. That said, taking it all together, I have to call it fairly mediocre. If you're interested in a YA romance in an interesting setting, this is for you, but I would not recommend it for a general audience.
