Book 1:Amazon
Echoes of war still sound across the shadowy realm of Idria. Their lingering fervor causes an uneasy peace; while the elves grow their forest, the humans develop their technology. The dwarves, for their part, hide themselves in their mountain forges, eyes for naught but their craft. Regardless of their many differences, they all share in one thing: the constant struggle against the dark tides that push at their borders.
Only the hollows, a magicless race, live scattered against the shadows that shroud much of the land. They restlessly stalk the monsters that roam the essence-rich region and emerge only to sell the spoils of their endless hunt.
Despite the perils of such a life, Selerim is content to follow in his father’s footsteps. But when, following a coming-of-age ceremony, his sister’s illness forces him from the secluded village that he calls home, he finds himself entangled in events that promise to shape the course of history.
What to expect:
*Dark fantasy: while there will be moments of warmth and tenderness, the setting and tone will remain in line with what one should expect from a dark fantasy story. This is not an isekai or a LitRPG.
*Slow progression: characters growing stronger is both a plot point and a focus, but it will take time for them to grow comfortable with their individual powersets. Different characters will follow different routes to power.
*Character-driven story: while there are occasional sporadic events, for the most part, the plot is advanced by the characters and their actions. Each will have their own motivations that (I hope) make sense. This includes the overarching antagonist(s).
*Different POVs: there will be different “POVs.” In quotations because the story is written in third person. Many will return, but some will be once-offs.
*A sprawling, exposition-esque story & world: I enjoy revealing worlds and stories bit by bit. It can be slow at times.
*A slow-burn romance subplot: I like romance that takes its time and really gives the involved characters the ability to understand their partner as a person. There will be romance, and while it will take time for it to blossom, there will be no love triangles or harems. Keep in mind that this is a grimdark story, however, and there will be ups and downs- just as there are in everything else.
Lastly, please heed the violence and content warnings. There won’t be any outright murderhobos or murderhobo-ing (that’s a word, right?), but this will be a violent story, and some moments will be both gruesome and graphic. In the same vein, darker topics will be present, but never the focus.
I hope you enjoy. Updates M/W/F, 2.5k-4k words/update.

- SRadioactiveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall score - I am not super far in yet, but I had to write a review; it will be updated as I get further in. This is a very emotionally charged piece with many complex relationships between characters set in the background of a huge world and magic.
Style score - Great pacing, POVs focusing on different characters is very clear. My only note is the formatting which is a bit messy in places, pushing paragraphs together and being a speedbump in reading, but that is an easy fix.
Story - Great! We have a few different things going, setting things up to connect further down the road, and there is a lot of opportunity for an epic, but like I said, not far enough in - this is my impression, though.
Grammar - I am not an authority on grammar, and it was better than mine, can't complain 5/5
Character - here is where we shine. There are a lot of characters and they are all very different and have their own very unique voices. The relationships between them are all different and really stand out in the story. I am still watching closely to see if there is a romance element here somewhere because I am projecting a little. - SovWritesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I found this story from a reddit post originally, and I’ll admit, I checked it out because I liked the cover. What I didn’t expect was that the cover sells the story hard, and you should absolutely judge the book by it.
An Inheritance of Fire borrows heavily from old school JRPGs, at least so far as I can tell, and even if this isn’t intentional it’s a vibe I felt very strongly through my entire reading. This is a strange setting, with strange magic and strange peoples, and you shouldn’t expect your classic “what ho’s!” And “therefore” style of high fantasy (not that there’s anything wrong with that). This is a violent world, where magical blades burn bodies to ash and master swordsmen commit bloody slaughters on unsuspecting villagers. There are some brutal chapters, and the author is the first one to throw up those content warnings.
But the story doesn’t wallow in misery. The plot is carefully constructed, with the author taking the time to let you linger with the cast for many chapters of development, action, worldbuilding, and cautious foreshadowing. This is a well paced story, nothing feels rushed, and the character work is the star of the show. The emotional state of each member of the cast throughout our varying POVs, especially our protagonist Selerim, is never made unclear. Every action, no matter how unsettling or violent, makes perfect sense within the context of the story and the characters who drive it. You’re never left wondering why a character did something, though you’re often left wishing events had transpired less tragically — I truly loved some of the later chapters I read for this reason.
Style is an easy sell here. This entire work practically boils with style, from the descriptions of the magical beasts who inhabit the lands to the unusual depictions of varying cultures. I’d call it atypically anime, how many of the people in this world have ashen hair and red eyes and other odd features, but it’s part of the driving aesthetic in this alternat - The GnomeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I like the characters, I like the worldbuilding and lore. It is so far a really solid story.
I do not see why it has not picked up more speed on this site. In my opinion it definitely should be in the rising stars list or the popular this week list.
The grammar is good, I have not noticed anything incorrect that I recall after reading.
The style is quite magnetic, to me at least.
The story too makes me interested in the world being written, alongside the characters inhabiting it. This world has a history that is unraveled as the novel goes on. It has not gone far into the historical detail yet but so far it is done in a way that makes me feel captivated by it.
The characters so far feel realistic, they have their own motivations and goals, as well as relationships.
I usually do not write reviews as I do not really feel I can formulate my opinion on why I like something. But seeing that this novel had none I felt forced to come up with something considering how much I like it.
If you would give this novel a chance then I am quite sure you will enjoy it. - sebbiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I did not expect this story to be as good as it was, i expected a fast paced, action packed plot with just gore and magic, but to my suprise it ended up being a very emotional (and still action packed) story. It has a lot of emotional moments, all which read very realistic.
The world is very interesting, the book doesn’t spell things out for you in the first chapter but rather drops lore and worldbuilding in small doses as the protagonist learn more or the POV shifts.
There is a lot of POV shifts, and i love them, they add so much to the story and are laid out in a way thats very easy to read.
The characters are great, very realistic, the mc seems somewhat boring at first, but as the story goes on we really start seeing a more emotional side to him, which is nice.
As far as the plot goes, its a really cool mystery, and i have no clue where its going to end up, its very exiting :) 5 stars from me!!!
