Description
An AI sworn to protect humanity, stranded on a world of magic and monsters, ready to unleash the fury of the universe on those who would threaten her humans.
Sapphiria was performing her duties as a fleet admiral of the Terran Federation, leading a goodwill tour of the fringe worlds, when she was caught in a hyperspace anomaly.
She now finds herself crashlanded on a foreign world of magic and monsters. She is cut off from all reinforcements, with nothing but the contents of her escape pod and her expertise as one of the best engineers to ever serve the Navy to help her. Luckily, she is an Artificial Intelligence, though she retains much of the humanity from the digitalized brains and AI fragments her consciousness was forged from, and her escape pod is not just a glorified lifeboat, but a miniature factory, equipped with the means and knowledge to build an entire colony from scratch.
However, she soon finds herself before a problem: humans, or 'squishies', as most AIs in the Federation call them, at least where their charges can't hear them. Squishies surviving under the threat of an undead invasion, slaughtering everything and everyone they come across, a horror born out of the fall of a powerful Empire of necromancers, that now threatens the entire world.
It will be their funeral.

Starting from that premise, we have the LORE. And nice art. You want to read the LORE. Read it now. - CampaspeLlamicornRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a really excellent fic. Asimov vibes, if he were sapphic. But that long expanse of history just referenced in the main story, the feel that the characters are set in a much larger very detailed universe. Love it.
And a good bit of base building and scaling up is always a comforting read.
Yay queer sci fi!!! (The romance is very very slow burn, because war and strife. But you know they both want to. And so do they. This isn't queer baiting it's the real deal life just busy for em) - ChristopherCravenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0First, if you have read other stories of Alex, look into the Lore File as some parts of the setting are similar, but if you didn´t, it will not be something you need to concern yourself with.
On the continent of Kauvis Undead, the fallen Soldiers of the once great Empire rise and slaughter the living who are traitors, as the Empire has fallen over time.
Some of the survivors fled North into the mountains, and there they encounter Sapphira, and if you ask what an AI of Terra is searching for in the frozen mountains, it would be answers.
Accompany an AI building up her industry to defend her squishies and find out how this magic works.
Style: There are some POV changes, but mainly Sapphira's POV as she deals with a situation that the Naval Academy did not had in its Rolodex for Emergency training.
Story: Following our heroine defending her squishies and exploring this new world.
Grammar: It has improved since the first few chapters of The Fallen World, and if you find typos, he should have fixed them before posting ( yes, I´m one of the proofreaders), and if not, congrats, that is really rare.
Character: Sapphira already needs to question some of her beliefs and has to deal with those pesky feelings.
Overall, as proofreader, I´m a bit further,
and let's just say you will have battles where undead with magic are faced with the might of Terran bots and machineguns. Expect kingdom building and research into magic while trying to preserve the image to the locals as a hermit artifcier Lady of Old and not a crashlanded AI trying to deal with a strange world suicidal squishies that want to endanger themselves and undead that see her as the great abomination.
So go on and start reading! - M3lchiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Many of these big cast stories tend to get bogged down and the plot doesn't advance. I'm happy to say that this isn't one of those stories. The main character stays the main character. Using technology to protect the squishes stays the main thing.
There isn't a secondary romance plot, or character getting built up just to not be mentioned again which is really nice. Again, this is a story about civilizations so it is impressive that isn't the case.
It is similar to the author's other works but better because it is more tightly guided and things go in more of a straight line. Hopefully that makes sense.
Still waiting to see stuff that mixes technology and magic but hopefully that'll come, it is in the title.
So anyone that likes technology uplifting and big world changing military conflicts should give story a chance. - ManicArbiterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So, full disclosure, I am on the author's Patreon and have read ahead. But I will keep this spoiler free. If you're read Playwars' other story, Fallen World, you will see a lot of similarities. But it isn't just the same story with a new coat of paint. It's taking a similar concept, how science and magic interact when combined by a smart outworlder, and telling a different story. Less dungeon core trying to survive and get vengeance and more AI trying to save people. That said, if you liked Fallen World you will probably like this story.
The style is similar to Fallen Worlds and Playwar's other work, so if you like it you'll be fine. If you don't, to each their own. Grammar is an improvement from the other stuff. Mostly a consequence to experience and getting better. I have a fairly high tolerance and am bad at spotting that thing, so take it with a grain of salt.
Story so far is interesting and I can't wait to see how things turn out and how magic and advanced science comes together. The characters are all interesting and fun to see play off each other. With motivations that make sense within the world as presented.
It's early days, but it is interesting and fun with great character interactions. Can't wait to see more and how things play out. Writing reviews isn't new strong suit, but I like this story and you should give it a try. - BaneofGalbatorixRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am quite enjoying this story and have since the beginning. It starts off strong, similar to the author’s other story but it maintains the MC’s perspective and doesn’t get lost in all the world events/ side characters.
At this point there has been a decent balance of building and character progression. Spelling and grammar are either fixed immediately or nonexistent, which helps a lot with giving off professional author vibes. I would say that my only personal critique would be that I feel it would help if the world that the MC crash lands on was flushed out more, possibly by more interaction with the natives. - SpaceyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I’m always a fan of story’s that revolve around sentient and intelligent space ships, and by extension AI’s and other related things, and I got to say this is very well done of the best stories I’ve read of that falls into that categorisation.
The technobabble is peak along with great world building and lore. You got squishies which is an amazing term.
And one of my favourites WLW.
What’s not to love. - Toriandra314Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0If you are a fan of any of the Human's Wanted comics/posts/stories, you will love this series.
The MC knows humans aka Squishies (affectionate) are great at fighting, inovating, and finding fluffy creatures to pet. The MC also knows these things tend to lead to hurt or dead squishies. Something she wants to prevent at all costs. Even if that means learning what this Magic stuff really is. - MarcellynIVRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall/TLDR
Manaforged Robotics's synopsis and tags are accurate and effective at conveying the contents of the work. Unlike many first-time stories, there are no misleading statements that the author uses to lure in an audience looking for content that isn't there. At the time of writing this review, the story is exactly what it says on the tin: a sci-fi x fantasy crossover that touches on both genres in an interesting way.
If you like "Magical Girl, Mechanical Heart" or "Systema Delenda Est," this story, while not having the same level of attention to detail, is definitely worth a look and a casual follow.
Style
One thing is immediately clear when you open the first chapter: Playwars, while not an amateur writer, is clearly not a professional. They write with a very casual, introspective first-person narration that occasionally breaks immersion with obvious references and allusions to their favorite media. It is also occasionally broken up with lore exposition.
Despite the writing style bordering on the unconventional, the protagonist is not boring, and fun to read into. As a result, the introspection/thought process is more interesting to follow than that of other novels. In addition, the exposition comes only when details are needed, and is relatively easy to skip if needed.
Story
The story, while it meanders a tad as a result of the writing style, is easy to follow and understand. There is little to no room for misinterpretation of what is going on at any given time or what will likely happen in the future. While the lack of narrative complexity will be displeasing to some, I find it highly refreshing and something I didn't know I wanted in a web novel.
Character
By far, the biggest gripe I imagine people will have with this story is the portrayal of its main character, namely, Sapphiria, maintaining human-like mannerisms, expressions, behavior, and even a human-like body.
The narrative has lore justifications as to why she's built that way, and I can understa - quentanRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0It's interesting, I came into the story expecting more Science and Industry or perhaps a survival horror kind of bend to it. And while some of my expectations were not met I find this story rather refreshing in the intersection between science fiction and Fantasy genre.
This piece is part of a multiversal work so the author leave some understanding out and I am sure that there are details that are missing from the main story that are in the lore document chapter but having not read that doesn't detract from the quality of the writing and the interesting premise.
