Druid Evolution (A Battle Royale, Druid MC LitRPG/Gamelit Adventure)

Description
A high school biology teacher is sucked into a new reality, where a mysterious Gamemaker forces him to fight for his life. With no other choice, Theodore Cross must become a Druid and master the powers of nature to protect himself -- and those he loves the most. --------------------------------------------------------------- What to expect: 1. A pretty standard LitRPG apocalypse set-up, with certain high-potential players getting invited to participate in an Arena. 2. A MC who is human and empathetic, who makes mistakes and flounders sometimes, but who is willing to fight and kill to protect his friends. 3. A quest to save his best friend and crush from another party of players led by two psychopaths. The MC doesn't vie for power, but does what he thinks is right and gains power along the way. The basic set up resembles a love triangle, but will not go that way. 4. A Game/System that is reminiscent of both Skyrim and Dungeons and Dragons. 5. Some gore and violence, mild horror, some foul language, references to torture. Leaving all the warnings on so that I can go different directions in the future. 6. Typos -- this is a first draft, so bear with me! I am going to keep writing forward, then go back later and take comments and suggestions into account.

- 1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0A system chooses indivuduals to fight for their lives, sorted into small teams. In terms of genre, this is more or less a battle royale game with high stakes; even the system announcement called it a game. The reward for winning? Incredible power.
The protagonist's group has some interesting dynamics, chiefly among them the fact that the system wants him to kill his best friend. Additionally, his dog appeared, who is now a wolf. Progression is where this story really shines. Unobtrusive LitRPG aspects, detailed skills and stats, with an actual effect on the narrative. I think that's about it for now? Definately a good read, overall. - hilburnRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Man, druids are cool. And they get so little love in writing, it's great to have a mature magic wielding main character and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes.
The story is well written, both technically with only a couple of grammar/typo issues that I noticed, and in terms of the characters, world and story.
The secondary characters are a little underdeveloped at this point, but I get the feeling this is something that will change in time.
The world and magic are simple, easy to understand, and have lots of scope to develop.
And there's already some interesting questions in looking forward to having answered by the story!
Give it a read - you'll probably enjoy it - mistermisterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0really promising start. characters feel real and the system is unique. cool to see litrpg from a druid's perspective, because i havnt seen that before. the writing is really solid and the story starts right away. there's a tutorial but the consequnces feel real so its not like just wasting time or making extra pages to read. also the multiverse aspect is really cool. seems like the writer could go almost anywhere with the story so im excited to see how the multiverse enters into this. looking forward to seeing where it goes!
style: style is great, to the point, but solid writing.
grammar: grammar is really good, i can't think of any mistakes ive seen. maybe one or two
story: story really picks up around the chapter 'quest received.' excited to see where the pvp elements of the story will go
character: theo is interesting. he seems kind but also a little distant. i like him but i'm not sure i have a really strong image of him as a person yet, just cause its so early in the story. i think i will learn more about him as it goes on. no spoilers but i really want to see how his quest turns out with Blake. that's keeping me reading for sure. - AlsoJohnRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Started slow but readable. Keeps picking up steam. Challenges are reasonable with out characters having to be overpowered.
This is a very good read at this point with no sign of plateauing or slowing down. Should be good for the long haul. (Honest reviews by readers as opposed to authors or language scholars should have a less inflated required word count) - JetsmillionRoyal Road★★★ 3.0At the start of the story, I was very interested in the idea of the character becoming a Druid based on their background. They were said to be both someone that enjoyed spending time in the wilderness and a biology teacher. Combine that with the Druid class and I was expecting someone who could exploite the combination of system granted skills and original knowledge and abilities.
Sadly that doesn't appear to be the case. Instead, the MC is acting like a standard video game protagonist as soon as he gets his class. He is grinding for levels, got a special cheat skill from a god/sponsor that wants to remain hidden, and even gets his dog turned into a wolf animal companion. On top of that, the MC even dismisses a possible class/path that he could have exploted heavily due to his background. I wouldn't have minded if he simply thought there was a better option, but it bothered me that he considered it to be mostly useless.
What is the point of giving him these backgrounds if they are going to be ignored once the story starts? - DreamsRoyal Road★★★ 2.5I'll preface it all by saying most people will probably enjoy reading this story. This review is also obviously going to be somewhat limited due to only being 18 chapters in.
Overall: The story is set up to be an isekai like battle royal at this point. The class of the MC is interesting and I am definitely looking forward to how it evolves in the future. Figured I'd get that out of the way at the beginning because that's always a main draw for these types of stories. The world being hexas is also something I enjoy. Slightly more unique than the standard litrpg set up and I can think of quite a few unique ways a story could go using them. Obviously at this point it's TBD if the author does something entertaining with the setup. The litrpg system is straight forward and easy to understand. Fairly basic but I can see avenues to make it more unique/interesting.
Style: No complaints so far. I give it a 4 star because although I haven't noticed any huge problems there's nothing special about it either. Fairly simple word choice and sentences. The descriptions get the job done but I wouldn't call it flowery for any means. There's for sure a good bit of improvement that could be found here as the author improves.
Grammar: A few small mistakes but the author is active in the comments and seems like they're committed to go back and try to fix things. I personally feel like that's good enough for a 5 star rating for a web novel without consistent glaring errors.
Story: A 3 star here although I think it could improve in the future if the author irons some things out. I already get a feeling that the power scaling is off. The rate of levels gained by different characters doesn't make a ton of sense based on what's explained so far in the story. The MC has also already gotten 1 (maybe 2) skills that are going to be a problem to balance going forward. Another minor qualm comes from the "event" the MC gets into is presented like he's one of a select few from Earth yet he ends up in - RepossessedSoulRoyal Road★★ 1.5This fiction starts off decently and works to establish expectations that teamwork can be used to overcome challenges but not without an equal challenge.
It also does a good job with indirect characterization and establishing some characters that look bland but have some promise.
Then the other shoe drops and it reveals itself for the unthinking 'I'm smart because the author says I am! (Ralph wigum voice)' power fantasy that doesn't have the good grace to be honest with itself.
This fiction couldn't make up its mind of being an unthinking attempted knockoff of First Defier/Primal or something that attempted to accomplish more while maintaining a similar theme/world.
I just couldn't make it past the first 'challenge' of saving the damsel from the PKrs that out leveled the MC and should have killed him via the worlds/stories established rules.
Which came right after the MC and two other characters thought it would be smart to take on a monster way stronger than them with half the team that was needed for the first fight being somewhere else.
Establishing rules and world interactions just to ignore them I favor of 'hero saving the damsel' character advancement is a poor decision. It broke my ability to suspend disbelief and connect with the character.
Don't make rules that won't apply to important characters, and don't make someone have their main Stat/character feature be Wisdom who then goes off and does dumb moves without thinking of the consequences. - PlutonianRoyal Road★ 0.5I was really looking forward to reading this. That is the only reason I am doing this review that this great idea was shot, beaten and then molested in one paragraph and it's explanation.
This pargraph for being choosen and having the highest score being wisdom is the reason he gets that class.
"Wisdom encompasses the arenas of willpower, empathy, intuition, perception, awareness, common sense, and spirituality. Wisdom is the core ability for Sages. A person with High Wisdom is more likely to unlock deeper secrets of the Great Game and the multiverse itself. Those with High Wisdom make excellent healers, priests, advisors, naturalists, and tacticians. Although not as immediately useful as the Physical Essences of Strength, Agility, or Durability, the Mental Essences more often tread the Paths that lead to Vast Universal Power. Your native Wisdom is 2.0, and the average human Wisdom is 0.7."
This whole thing is contrived. How is it that he has high will power or empathy when he cannot getup the courage to ask the woman he is pinning for out? In order to be empathetic you have to be able to read people, and in the first chapter he himself described being unable to read people and when the woma od his desire shows signs of being interested in the other dude he aparently can't tell even knowing that is one of the sign of interest the is ofte showed. Same goes for intuition and perception. He cant intuit or percieve that if the woman he is interestted in is also interested in him or not. He is also not aware of his surronding when the person he considers a friend/enemy is right besides him until they speak. Commonsense not sure about but, from what I have read so far he is most likely lacking in that department as well. Have not read enough to know about spiritualit and will not know because I don't want to read this teenage drama.
In conclusion, the reason for this story is so obvious and cliched that even cliches went "NOPE, I"M OUT!". If the authour wanted to have th
