Unreliable narrator inside. This novel contains a lot of subtext.Currently in epilogue. Book two in the universe is next on my writing queue.Cover byLittleRuby726

- Black Rose.Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Okay this is my first review and to be clear it is an unsolicited one. (only read as far as the 6th chapter when writing this)
Story:
What we have here seems to a Magical Girl LitRPG story set in a world populated by humans and fae, alongside alien fauna. The protagonist is the daughter of what seems to be a leader of a human resistance. Yet not all is quite as it seems given the warning of an unreliable narrator. a story like this is full of potential for shades of grey.
Characters:
Our lead is Casey, a young girl that is trying to be a Guardian in the hopes of helping her father overthrow the current regime. Her father in turn seemed to be the leader of the resistance or at least an important member of such, and wants his daughter to gain the power without revealing to the current fae overlords their goals, which means we have a good conflict on top of the resistance one. Rounding out the core cast so far is Ela, a fairy that grants Cases the powers of a guardian, but as an agent of the fae selves as an antagonist as she tries to get Casey to diverge secrets that could jeopardize the revolution. The last character of note so far as Casey's mom who was killed by the fae.
The fae themselves are interesting as the main antagonist, dystopic overlords are a dime a dozen, and they seem to be wanting Casey for unexplained reasons. Yet we haven't quite seen the rulers yet and Casey is established to be an unreliable narrator by the blurb. There is a possibility that the arthoress might go with shades of grey instead of writing it, maybe the resistance will be revealed to actually be a human supremacist moment that Casey was is indoctrinated into, maybe the fae are will be revealed to actually benevolent rulers. Or maybe things should be taken at face value ad the resistance is a noble one and the fae the moanrchs of a fairyland hellhole that'd put Avalon to Fae to shame. Just take that as my speculation for now. With that said I am looking forward to where they are going - BlenheimRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Through the looking glass on Magical Girl Gunslinger - A teen girl in an abusive household/cult that holds onto a strong and positive personality in incredibly difficult circumstances rather than becoming introspective and dull.
Other characters are really good, although there is a likely intentional cartoonish quality to some of the villains. The fairy advisor is intensely annoying.
World building is great, looking forward to more. - CobaltWolfRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0After this author's first story went down, I was a bit sad. But holy shit, I'm glad this new piece is out now. Twists on the Magical Girl genre are not new, nor is adding litRPG aspects to them. However, this series adds the most horrifying thing to a magical story- Bureaucracy.
Without going too much into spoilers, the world of magical girls and boys is corrupt and run by evil magic fae who want to turn the entire world into other fae. Casey is a rogue magical girl who was able to gain powers without submitting to the horrific bureaucracy and is currently in massive danger while her familiar tries to repeatedly get her to join the system. It is a bizarre concept, and there's so much more to the world than just that. The way that mana exists in the world is unique in that the human body isn't exactly great at accepting it. Where in a normal litRPG setting killing a fish might give you levels, in this setting it fucking poisons you. Yay! It is horrific and depressing being a citizen of this world and trying to survive, and if one were to be a normal citizen, I can imagine them appreciating the existence of the Fae run magical girl society.
Character wise, the story is strong. Casey is easy to sympathize with and makes for a strong protagonist who has genuine struggles to put up with. They are pretty OP even this early on, but there's a good chance that the rest of magical girl society is about as reality bending as her. The dad is strict and intent on leveling up Casey (a sort of continuation of their previous series with Riley's father), but in a much more fucked up manner. It is a uniquely exploitative and even sometimes abusive relationship that makes you feel for Casey's struggle to affirm herself to her father and live a happy life. Maybe it's just me, but forcing your daughter to fight dangerous monsters on the regular to level up to fight the evil fascist fairies isn't great parenting. It's getting even more messed up in recent chapters when her father is tryi - DWinchesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Having only just started reading this fine book I cannot say it is my favorite magical girl story (Puella Madoka Magica), but I can say it's a contender and compares very favorably with my previous RR mahou shoujo favorite, Nowhere stars. Looking forward to digging deeper into this one. Thank you author!
- LazieRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Dear diary,
This fiction presents an interesting premise. The story is told from the perspective of a 14-year old's diary, and given from the perspective of a child as she ages while also being a magical world.
There is a society that has been taken over by a system, and this is a LitRPG, for anyone wondering. There are few text boxes in chapters, with most of them concentrated at the bottom in a summary and hidden by a spoiler.
This fiction is a subversion of tropes, several of which this crab is not 100% farmiliar with, due to being new to the genre. There is an air of mystery to the story, and there is the promise of a reveal with each chapter that is released. At some point, that mystery will come to fruition, and this crab imagines it will be well worth the wait.
The character has the foilables and follies that are present in all teenagers, and thus makes an engaging and well fleshed out character. Casey has a definite air of determination to her as well as a respect for the authority of her father that sometimes strains credulity for those who don't understand the contradictory variance teenagers are capable of.
For fans of magical girls and LitRPGs, this story is most definitely well worth the read. So open up the diary, be prepared to read and be prepared to run when the FBI finds out you stole a child's diary.
From,
A low-level crab - coralieRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I like :
- Casey, the narrator, is also the protagonist, a teenager with very relatable attention issues
- Casey is a hilarioiusly hopeless supervillain who gets up to all sorts of antics in the name of saving the world
- In Magical Girl worlds, the "familiar" is the friendly face with invaluable advice and resources for the newly-hatched MG. True in this story too, but not in the way you'd expect, and certainly not the way Casey expects.
- 1st-person narration, I'm not used to this style but it definitely grew on me
- No romance! (I can see a future for Casey and Daniele though ; they're just too busy right now to notice)
Could be improved :
- Give Casey a bit of time at the end to process her trauma, and exact revenge, perhaps hilariously, on her tormentors
- I don't understand why Casey trusts Dad so easily. Dad is a bit see-through and one-dimensional. He is all hard taskmaster and zero affection. I didn't see any Dad behaviour justifying Casey's ongoing trust. And the story relies on Casey trusting him and his version of events, without question. But Casey seems much smarter than that, I would expect a bit more cynicism from a teenager especially
The mechanics of the world seem to allow her power up a little too easily, but she more than makes up for this by being . It would have been interesting to watch her exact revenge on her oppressors post-epiphany - crimeladRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A story more about the girl than the magic. There are fights and some are important, but all the conflict comes from family, loneliness, isolation, angst, friendship, and a young girl learning to make her own choices and fumbling along the way.
There are litrpg elements but they are thankfully pretty light. The MC has an antagonistic relationship with her familiar, which is refreshing, and completely avoids the issue that other works in the genre sometimes have where a problem shows up, familiar offers a solution, and the girl executes it.
A very enjoyable story if you like compelling teenage drama and a main character who acts like a real person, even if its messy at times. - LleayaaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I don’t usually read a lot of litrpg novels because they always tend to blend together and not be original. Thats not the case here, this one really caught my eye. The author clearly has put a lot of love and care into the story. I’m only at chapter 6 but i’m finding it fun and really enjoyed it and do plan to continue.
Style
The pacing is very well done and the narrative doesnt feel uncomfortable or awkward. I found it very easy to read with only a few slight hiccups(barely any). The formatting is well done and there aren’t many errors that’d make it a deal breaker.
Story
This story very well put together, I’ve rarely had this much enjoyability from a litrpg but this one took the cake. My only concern would be some more detail in world building but I imagine as the story goes on i’ll get my wish.
Grammar
I haven’t had much trouble with the grammar in the story, though some quotations were missing and other small grammatical errors which made parts a little confusing but it wasn’t to hard to understand. Generally the grammatical errors don’t cause any major problems in the story. Slight editing will easily fix the issue.
Character
The mc is nicely set and shows promise. Though a good amount of the time I’ve found her to be a little bland and lacking descriptive touches.
Overall
It’s definitely a solid story. I’d recommend this story to anyone who enjoys general litrpgs and are wanting a new look. - YoungreeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Fun magical girl
The protagonist is an interesting take on the litrpg genre. There aren't too many young heroines so to have one here is a breath of fresh air. We get a good look at the protagonist's early life including the story with her father and what seems to be a very interesting world. The description of food at the beginning was interesting and made me wonder what "Mana food" would be like. The early paragraphs read a bit like the protagonist is meant to be talking to us as the reader which was a bit disjointing but the confusion ends relatively quickly. From there we get to enjoy the story and go on the beginnings of what I hope to be a long and fun journey. If you are looking for something new to enjoy I would recommend reading. - DragonzruleRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5For a really, really well-written book I found my response to this story all over the place at times. Let me explain. Casey is a fun character with a great sense of humor but she is in a very dark situation and there's a lot - a lot - and a lot - of abuse through perhaps 60 chapters of the story, both by her family toward Casey, and by her toward her familiar. The prose swings between being "dear diary" and beautifully poetic, and for me was one the the highlights. The climax, while terrifically satisfying and resolved in a way that was not foreshadowed, develops so fast I felt a bit of whiplash.
Sooo ... worth reading? Absolutely! I do hope the author is able to develop a Book 2 but this one does stand firmly on its own as a complete arc.
