This was my first story on Royal Road. The new version can be found atthis link. It's received such extensive reworking that it's no long the same story in any real sense, and I'm renaming this story in order to successfully stub the new version. This one will remain on Royal Road unless Amazon panics about the first chapter's similarities - I have no plans to publish it as an eBook or Audiobook otherwise. Thank you.

- ninjacat007Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is still hot off the press and I'm only on Chapter 6 (the latest one as of this review), but so far Halcyon Nightmares is a delightful LitRPG adventure with a unique setting and a wonderful cast of characters. This story would appeal to anyone who has a taste for scifi LitRPG with a hearty dose of girl power.
Style: The writing has an easy, breezy style that flows naturally, striking a delicate balance between action and description. Worldbuilding is unobtrusively woven into the story, and the author helpfully includes little epigraphs before each chapter (ie TV interviews about the academy), giving color to the world and making it feel lived-in.
Story: So far the story is super fast paced. By the end of the first chapter, the setting and characters are established and chaos begins to erupt in the city of Haven. Like the teaser for a good movie, the author drops enough tidbits about Magitech Girls and the looming threat of Emergences to keep you intrigued without revealing too much. I'm excited to watch this story unfold.
Grammar: Unimpeachable. I'm pretty fussy about grammar but nothing jumped out at me.
Character: So far the cast of characters is small but well-developed, and the dialogue is crisp and engaging. I'm enjoying in particular the chemistry between Alice, James, and Overclock.
Overall this story has a very promising start. If you enjoy LitRPG, you will definitely enjoy Halcyon Nightmares! - Jack0fheartRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Halcyon Nightmares is an action-packed and captivating story that follows Alice, a high school student who becomes a Magical Girl to save the life of her savior, Overclock, set within a magical girl academy in the city of Haven.
Overall score 5/5: This book is an engrossing and well-crafted story that will keep readers hooked from start to finish. The story is filled with action, suspense, and memorable characters that make for an exciting and enjoyable read.
Style score 5/5: The writing is superb, with well-crafted sentences and an immersive style that draws the reader into the story. The author's ability to create a vivid world filled with magical girls and their unique abilities is impressive.
Story score 5/5: The story is full of action and adventure, and the characters are well-defined and multi-dimensional. The world-building is superb, and the author does an excellent job of creating a believable and immersive world that is easy to get lost in.
Grammar score 5/5: The grammar is flawless, with clear and concise writing that flows smoothly without any noticeable errors.
Character score 5/5: The characters are well-developed and memorable, with unique personalities and motivations that add depth to the story. Alice, the protagonist, is a relatable and sympathetic character, and her journey from a regular high school student to a Magical Girl is both thrilling and emotionally compelling.
In conclusion, Halcyon Nightmares has well-crafted plot, immersive world-building, and memorable characters that make it a must-read. I highly recommend this story to all lovers of magical girls! ♥ - Leahcim ZanathaxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a Magical Girl story, and a pretty good one! I'm normally not hugely into that kind of thing, though I don't really dislike it, either.
Of course, as a Magical Girl, the MC fights weird monsters - its practically a rule for this kind of story. In Halcyon Nightmares, though, the monsters they fight are an interesting spin on that theme. I also like the fact that, despite not being able to gain magical powers, boys are an important part of every magical girl's support team!
The grammar, spelling, and punctuation are all very good - well above average for RR.
This is a darned good story, you should give it a read. - M.G DriverRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've been following this since it caught my eye on 'New Releases' sci-fi. I can already tell that if the Author plays his cards right, this is a straight shot to a rising star position in a month or so.
The story follows all the usual tropes of a magical girl story, accented by gruesome scenes of carnage and destruction when the enemies attack. The bits and pieces of world lore at the top of every chapter gives a sense of wide scale detail. The author has clearly put a ton of effort into this novel, and i see it as a win for the readers as well.
Style:
Small pieces of worldbuilding information at the top of every chapter helps the readers feel that they are truly immersing into another world. The key of writing is to make the world such that the reader can imagine living in such a world, and the author has achieved this perfectly in my opinion.
Action sequences happen in short fast sentences, perfectly matching the pace of the high tension battles. Dialogue is clear and detailed enough to convey emotions, information and reveal character types.
Story:
As of the latest chapter, there's not much of a story now. The entire first six chapter is a high tension sequence so that is the main focus of the story now. I can sense a greater adventure ahead, if my assumptions are correct, and the world already seems to be set up for a few emotional tragedies.
Grammar:
5/5, perfection. I'm not native.
Character:
This is the only lacking part for me so far in the first six chapters, I don't really feel a sense of curiousity towards the MC. I get that the MC is truly ordinary, but perhaps a show of how different she is from the norm in terms of emotions, willpower, perspective on life, willingness to help can be better accentuated.
Other side characters haven't really had the time to shine yet, but we already see a gritty professional side to the magical girls, making it more realistic.
Overall, while it is still early in the novel, the author has the foundations to make something - NageboroshiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's a very interesting and very well written story, well above most of the stuff you find on RR! The plot is nice, the characters feel alive and there is not just a focus on action, but also the characters themselves. I like it and you will too, since you clicked on this page, considering the title and cover!
- WheelsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A very good story! I dig the twist on the animal companion thing- making it a human makes it feel more personal- and the story as a whole has a good feel and kept me digging. I actually meant to savour this for reading at work, but just slammed right through in one day.
If I had one concern, it would be the author saying they changed something due to reader feedback. If it's an editor, that's one thing, if it's just readers... I've had bad experiences with authors giving up impactful and fascinating plot elements because they weren't popular.
To not end a 5 star on a negative note- I'm just always glad to see magical girls who serve as synbols of hope. Too many people like subverting the good things in life. The world is harsh, but our heroes don't have to be, and I'm glad to see that here. - KarogRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Its a somewhat standard MG starting story, but better written than most. It struck a middle ground between MGG and SCS, being neither as dark or as humorous.
It ´resents an interesting background with a nice MC. So far , really interesting , so I hope it keeps going for a long time. - Apollo149Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Halcyon Nightmares [Sci-fi Magical Girls LitRPG], written by Aestereal is a new take on the magical girl formula with a dark twist. The main character is Alice, who is a student at West End High. She aspires to become a Magical Girl. However! Things take a sudden turn when an Emergence occurs at her school. It feels like trouble finds here when she encounters the Magical Girl, Overclock. This sends Alice down a path to fight an ever-increasing onslaught of hellscape machina.
Halcyon Nightmares is fast-paced and action-packed. Which the reader experiences right from the very first chapter. Plus the author adds some angst thrown into the mix here and there. The only downside is that we still barely know the characters in the beginning and so it is a bit difficult to truly feel the weight of their conflict, but I feel it coming.
The main character is the strongest part of the story by far (even though I love how the author uses the LitRPG blue boxes: they are done well). While in many ways a fairly typical magical girl story it differs from many other characters in these stories in key ways.
Grammar: Some minor mistakes, but nothing too egregious that makes the story unreadable. There's one thing that I struggled with, and that was the frequent switches from past to present tense. I'm not the best at grammar so for me, fine.
Halcyon Nightmares has a well-crafted plot, world-building, and notable characters. - BookseerRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I've read stray cat strut and mgm and figured I'd give this a shot. I knew going into it this was an early work but it's still pretty good. I'm not very far yet, so it'll probably get better over time. It's not "can't put down" but still very enjoyable.
- MezoarRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5This story was fun at times but really didn't feel that special. The author states that Magical Girl Gunslinger was what inspired them and it shows. MGG is a great story and what was the same still works but it sometimes just feels like a kickoff.
A decent story just don't expect greatness.
