Description
Zeke is a bartender from New York whose greatest talents are mixing drinks, chain-smoking, and complaining that his life is going nowhere. None of that prepares him for being abruptly dropped into a cult-classic video game world from the early 2000s; a game series so obsessively dissected by its fandom that it has outlived the servers and the developers of the game itself. Like any isekai protagonist, Zekedoeshave a special power. Unfortunately, it isn't magic, a legendary weapon, or infinite stat points. Instead, it's access to an online fan forum dedicated to the very game world he's now trapped inside. The problem is that every time Zeke asks for help, the forum assumes he's writing fanfiction. To get advice on things like avoiding monsters, finding safe campsites, and figuring out why everything in the world is trying to kill him, Zeke has to prove he's "doing the research." That means posting field notes, travel logs, dungeon maps, and historical breakdowns of his own near-death experiences. The more he writes, the more engaged the fandom becomes...all while completely missing the fact that this is all really happening to him. As Zeke struggles to survive a hostile world filled with bandits, hidden dungeons, and boss fights the community swears never existed, the forum itself turns into a second warzone. Lore purists argue canon versus headcanon. Amateur historians dissect his posts line by line. Longtime fans resent him for not knowing trivia that they've long since memorized. Live at the Forumis a story about survival, the absurdity of fandom culture, and the strange way collective storytelling fills in the gaps when canon falls silent. It's an isekai where the most dangerous thing in the world isn't a monster or magic, but being corrected by someone with a wiki link while you're actively bleeding.

- leaf3367Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The central premise of live at the forum almost makes you think you’ve seen something like it before. Let me disabuse you of that notion. This is not your everyday isekai, portal fantasy or dollar store escapism. This has all the hallmarks of a serious writer with story to tell, who is thinking ahead and has a plan, and isn’t interested in pumping out slop.
Style- fantastic, the forum conceit is wonderfully done and makes you feel like you could actually be reading it on the forum. Especially if you see your comment used in story. It does a great job of driving reader engagement with the material, and I’ve never seen a story presented in quite this way before.
Story- absolutely solid writing chops. It is a slow burn at times, but even the non action chapters have stakes, payoffs and lore. Oh, the lore. So far some of the best lore I’ve seen out of original fiction. Great stuff. Actually now that I think about it. Maybe it’s a slow burn for some people, but there were very few points where it felt like the story was dragging, and unlike for some stories I follow, I’m always eager to jump right into the chapter and it never stays open in a tab for long. Taken from that perspective it’s less of a slow burn than some action stories I’ve read!
Grammar- if he’s made a grammar mistake yet I haven’t caught it. No the deliberate misspelling of certain words by the forum posters don’t count. The contribute to the feel of the community involved in fracture verse content.
Character- characters really make or break a story from what I’ve seen. Zeke is a solid protagonist with-believe it or not- actual character traits. A lot of authors have Gary Stu’s or reader stand ins for a main character. Zeke breaks the mould by feeling like a real, 3d, flesh and blood person as the main character. Heck even the forum posters feel more fleshed out than another story’s love interest!
All in all, this definitely deserves your attention. I’m not going to say that this is the greatest thing to - CodyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I absolutely love this story, it's truly and amazing and deep world its painting. I feel drawn in and like I'm truly part of the story watching day by day as Zeke explores this new world and fights with a rowdy forum of passionate nerds who pull him from wanting to fight against age old monsters and then to talking for hours about lore even a scholar of that world wouldn't know of. I can't wait for more, I'm so excited!
- Dreams of MarsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As I said, the author of this story is either a genius or a bit crazy, maybe a little of both. I’d never seen a story in this format before. It mixes several different things: forum comment templates, first person narration from the MC, and gigantic chapters that feel like info dumps but seem like they were taken from a history book. It’s kind of hard to explain, but it’s like a patchwork of several plans stitched into one piece that somehow turned out beautiful.I often found myself agreeing with the comments on the forum. Other times, I found myself cursing at them, so it feels like I’m there on the forum too. It’s incredible. The world is so interesting, and it seems like we’ve only seen a small part of it. It’s become one of my favorite stories, and I hope it gets updated more and more.I spent two days of my time off on it, staying up until the early hours of the morning. Some chapters are huge. Anyone who wants to read and enjoy truly profound stories will surely like this. I think the only ones who won’t like it are those who prefer wish fulfillment stories. It has my seal of approval.
- FickleGnomeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is a refreshing and unique take on the isekai genre, and using forum posts as the medium for the story leads to some interesting plot lines and dialogues. The author does a great job of capturing the personalities of a bunch of random internet strangers, and the plot manages to not feel forced. Like some others have said, it might not be for everyone, but I think it’s worth a shot, especially with how boilerplate a lot of the front-page stories have become.
- FillaskRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0To put it simply: I came across this story and read the entire thing with every bit of free time I had, doing very little else but reading. It's gloriously unique in the way that it is presented.I've been a die-hard reader for the better part of my life. For the last decade and a half, I've been keeping track of the number of stories I've read and I've consistently hit well over 100 each year. So when I say that I've never come across anything like it, barring a passing similarity to a dungeon core story where all the dungeon cores were communicating with each other via something forum-esque, I feel it says something.Self-aggrandising and disclaimers aside...I will readily admit that sometimes things went on a massive tangent, that I didn't always enjoy the choices that were being made, and that I had my gripes with the MC. Normally, I would dock points for it, but then I would read on and see that the author had written exactly what I was thinking, framed as forum posts by random folks.Where normally I would feel the frustration mounting, here I just had to chuckle every time a forum shitposter would come along and voice exactly what I was thinking. The MC isn't perfect, the pacing isn't perfect, the language isn't perfect, but the style and the way the story is presented just blows all of that away. Typos become immaterial simply due to the fact that it's all presented as forum posts, which are rife with language errors. Pacing stays annoying, but becomes forgivable by making it feel as if it's just people sharing their feelings, experiences, and goals, as opposed to an author trying to write the perfect story. The style makes it feel human. It makes it interesting and unique and I love it.The fact that it's filled with references and comparisons that feel like they were catered specifically to me also helps.
- GGOAPRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have been reading this story over on SpaceBattles, and overall I have been really enjoying it.
The worldbuilding and interaction with the forum goers offer a really unique experience, where Zeke (the protagonist) has to navigate appeasing them and staying alive. I think an example of what it feels like is Omniscient reader's viewpoint, but not quite.
the worldbuilding is also quite unique, seemingly pulling from various series from the 2000s and 2010s as inspirations, as it merges them in ways that are intentionaly kind of messy, but with strings tying them all together, as a lot of our informations comes from (instory) theory crafters, that took all the information they could from the games, and started connecting them like conspiracy theorists with red string and a corkboard.
The protagonist isn't powerful and that really offers a different perspective to the already unique world, from most stories, that may change with time but the slowburn really works in the fic's favor as the protagonist slowly builds their strength.
overall, I think that if you are looking for a story that blends nitty gritty realism, with talking via a computer, with disembodies voices that give (sometimes) sometimes questionable advice, this story is probably for you. - GigabyteRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is successfully pulling a concept I have always been looking for but never able to find: the interaction between 'the internet' and its characters. The forum sections feel like a reasonable facsimile of real forum culture, although it does get a bit expositiony at times I think that can be explained with the fact that all the forum posters are big fat nerds. The story itself works fine, although it is sometimes difficult to reconcile the first-person segments being in a forum post. Great! My only real complaint is how the characters say 'dood' instead of 'dude'. It violates the natural order.
- LuckyKPRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Really fun premise and excellent execution on the idea. MC is a begrudging NY Bartender turned video game adventurer just trying to stay alive in a beloved but defunct series. His fairy god mothers are lore-nerds and internet trolls from the game’s forums who don’t believe his life is on the line. I’m loving the story’s framework- it could feel gimmicky, but instead is immersive and all the posters of the forum sound like the kind of people you’d meet in a discord channel or game lobby (if a bit more reasonable than your average gamer). Looking forward to keeping up with Zeke’s travels through the Deadlands and beyond as he tries to make it back home to Earth without being killed, inducted into a cult, or eaten by cannibals.
- OmniextRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Live at the Forum is a story of an isekai into a video game that the MC, Zeke, isn't aware of, shown almost solely through the forum that the Zeke has access to in universe, which is a forum full of people who've actually played the game. Zeke, having zero knowledge of the verse, obviously asks them for context, hints, and help so that he doesn't die. Only, they think he's writing a fanfic and so, act accordingly.
I fully admit, I'm a sucker for forum interludes or full forum stories like Worm's Meta, but this blows everything else out of the water. Not only have I never seen a premise like this, Zeke is also an incredibly honest take on an isekai. No, you wouldn't be calm. No, you wouldn't be a hyper competent badass. You'd be Zeke, panicking and floundering. It's also pretty cool to see the types of people who tend to be on forums.
STYLE: 5/5
As I said before, I'm a big fan of these forum type stories, so I gave style a 5/5. It might be a bit too slowburn for some people, as some in-universe people mention, but I think it isn't so bad.
GRAMMAR: 5/5
I can't think of any mistakes off the top of my head, so they were either minor or nonexistent. Either way, 5.
STORY: 5/5
Great stuff. Isekai through the lens of literally anyone else is already a treat, doing it through the lens of an out-of-universe group who can interact with the MC and thinks that it's fake is just fantastic. Half the fun is figuring out what the forum is going to do next tbh.
CHARACTER: 4.5/5
I'd give it a 5, but even now Zeke isn't really a 5 for me. That's more on me than the character- pretty sure I've read too much shit by now that my standards for a 5 are too high- but he's realistic, honest, and a good guy. The posters are all fairly consistently characterized too, actually, and they're characterized enough that I noticed that, so that's cool. - Pericles_OzymandiasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0For the millions of words I’ve read on Royal Road, I’ve never written a review before which is probably sacrilegious.
This novel, even though it’s clearly far from over, necessitated a review because it is beyond a shadow of a doubt, one of the greatest written works I’ve ever seen.
The lore and breadth of emotion that this novel exhibits is something Tolkien would’ve been proud of.
The only grammatical or spelling error I have come across so far was ‘cool’ instead of ‘cook’. There are no run-on sentences, or weird tenses or peculiar phrasings that ever break up the immersion of the story.
I’m the type of person that reads fast so I’ll often end up letting my eyes glaze over the 1,000s of random lines of text that could have been boiled down to a few things of dialogue or a summary instead of repeats of unexceptional and unimportant information. I’ve done that maybe once over the course of these first chapters, everything feels worthwhile and relevant to what may come later.
This story is a class act, and even if it ended here on such a cliff hanger with no resolution, I’d still be glad I read it, because it’s so freaking good.
