Ezra - Life is Messy

Description
Ezra Key was never supposed to stand out. In a world where power is inherited and wealth dictates worth, he’s just a kid trying to keep his head down. But life has a way of pulling people into battles they never asked to fight.
He starts school in a place where names hold weight, where students inherit their future like a birthright, and where being nobody means being invisible. But Ezra refuses to disappear. He works harder, thinks smarter, and refuses to let privilege write his story for him. AlongsideBruiser,a former enemy turned brother, andJulie,a girl who sees through the illusions everyone else accepts, Ezra begins forging his own path.
But no matter how far he rises, something darker looms beneath the surface. TheWhite Coatsare more than just a legend, their influence stretching beyond boardrooms and into the very fabric of history itself. When Ezra is handed an opportunity most could only dream of—one that Julie despises and his father would have killed for—he is forced to question everything he thought he knew about success, legacy, and the cost of ambition.
As the past catches up with him and the future demands an answer, Ezra is left with a single truth:
Life doesn’t care if you’re ready.
And sometimes, the only way forward is through the mess.

- Lucian T. EinarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story presents an engaging coming-of-age story with a strong emotional core. The protagonist, Ezra, is well-developed, and the world around him feels rich and immersive. The interactions between characters, particularly between Ezra and Julie, bring depth and authenticity to the narrative. The themes of growth, ambition, and perseverance shine through, making this a compelling read.
Style: The writing style is engaging and fluid, effectively balancing descriptive and action-driven moments. However, some sections lean toward wordiness, which occasionally slows the pacing. Simplifying certain passages and refining dialogue exchanges can make the text even more impactful. The emotional weight in key scenes is well-handled, but minor tweaks could enhance clarity and emphasis.
Story: The plot is strong, offering a mix of personal struggles, academic ambition, and thrilling experiences. The world-building is impressive, particularly with technological advancements and the contrast between privilege and effort. However, the story could benefit from a clearer distinction between past and present events in certain sections. The pacing is generally solid but tightening a few slower moments would enhance momentum.
Grammar: Overall, the grammar is well-executed with only minor errors, mostly in sentence structure and occasional repetition. A few run-on sentences could be restructured for better readability. Additionally, some dialogues could be tightened to sound more natural, reducing redundancy while maintaining character voice.
Character: Ezra is a relatable and compelling protagonist, and his relationship with his father is particularly well made. Julie adds a lively contrast, and their dynamic strengthens the narrative. However, some secondary characters could use more distinct personalities to avoid feeling like mere plot devices. Giving them small but defining traits would add more richness to interactions. - SaturnMRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The book can be described as a life lesson that deals with many different topics such as personal growth, rivalry, self-development, and overcoming difficulties that most people might encounter in their daily lives. In general, I can't call myself an expert in this type of genre (I usually lean more towards survival literature or other horror genres) but what I can assure you is that as a person outside their comfort zone, this book was something refreshing.
Style score:
The style is perfect for a slow-paced but fluid book like this one. I liked it so much that it did something almost impossible, and that was to make chapters of nearly 8k words feel like a stroll between pages.
Story score:
I will try to explain this part without giving spoilers. In general, the story is based on Ezra Key, a young man who seeks to better himself and how he learns life lessons alongside other characters such as Seth (his father) and Julie (his ex-rival and now best friend). Sounds simple, right? Well, they're wrong because the author decided that this story would be able to teach readers more than school, and that specifically is what makes it so good.
Grammar Score:
It is well written, with no visible spelling or grammar mistakes to put you off reading.
Character Score:
The characters feel human and the conversations are fluid. Each one has their own personality and beliefs. This is one of the many points that I feel make the chapters and the book itself shine.
To conclude, the only thing I can say that left me feeling like something was missing was in the first chapter after Seth came up with the walkie-talkie solution, I feel that the situation between Julie and Ezra could have been explored more. For example, by showing how their conversations changed to become more friendly. (It's probably just me, but I was left wondering what happened during that time.)
For my part, I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read, even if you're not a fan of the genre. Because in “Ezra - bcmetcalfRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style- the story has long chapters comprised of scenes from the MC's life. It is character driven and mixes emotional moments with comedic relief.
Story- Ezra is a kid trying to navigate life. He faces many of thr struggles any child does; family, friends, school, growing up, learning who he is. The story takes place in a future that feels futuristic, but not quiet science fiction.
Characters-Ezra feels like a young kid becoming a young man. All his experiences are realistic and complex. He is the product of a caring father that is raising an intelligent and thoughtful child. The extended cast are not flat and very much feel layered. The rich girl is more than a snotty brat. The bully is compensating for his dysfunctional home life. The father is as flawed as any parent, but he does his best to not let this effect how he raises his child.
Grammar-there were minor errors, but nothing that was distracting, and they weren't numerous. I remember a couple of issues, minor ones, but they were early on. I've forgotten what they were by now. I feel like they were typos or something trivial.
Overall-if you like a story that will make you laugh, make you wanna cry, and makes you wanna keep reading...this is it. I really feel like this story is heading into something much more awesome as we get to read more. - Raizia URoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Style:
The style of this novel is pretty well done and it reads smoothly. However, I will note that some stuff is long winder, and needs to be smoothed out a touch. As this is the authors first book, It done very well and better than most first books I've read. There are some tense shifts that occur and minor sticking points that can be smoothed out with a quick proof read and some general line edits.
Story:
Story wise it is a very interesting premise. However there isn't much to grasp onto at the moment as there are only six chapters. But the world building is solid, there is more showing rather than telling. There are numerous plot points ready to explore, so I'm certain that this novel could become something great.
Grammer:
I'm terrible at editing, as anyone who has read my novels know. But I only noticed a few sticky points. The vocabulary is clear, but sometimes the writing just draws on a bit longer than it should. For some this is a good point, others, not so much.
Character:
The story follows Ezra, who by all accounts is a really well fleshed out character. He has hopes, thoughts, and feelings. Above all that however he has definition, and is multifaceted.
The other characters feel alive, and have thier own agency, which, is lacking serverly in most novels on this website. Characters from Seth, and Julia are able to exist on thier own in a vacuum and that alone is worth checking out. Even an early bully is portrayed in away that makes you feel bad for them instead of just hating them.
The world building is solid.
Overall:
This novel is really good and pretty well written. It has a vast amount of potential that can be tapped into given enough time. I highly recommend you check it out! - Ember1213Royal Road★★★★ 4.0While I'm not very far in, I feel I've read enough to condense my thoughts into a review. For one, the chapters are very long. Like, one chapter feels more like three or four chapters in one. Personally, I'm not a fan of the length, though I respect the passion and dedication it takes to make chapters of such length and I'm sure some would prefer a nice long read. The grammar is mostly solid, however there are many instances in the two chapters I've read.
With my two biggest gripes out of the way, I can say one of the benefits of the length is that so much is in a single chapter that nothing feels crammed in or rushed. You get a pretty basic gist of the world fairly early as well as the different dynamics between the characters. The first chapter does an amazing job showing how advanced this world is to the point that rockets to space seem alien to Ezra, and what that advancement has affected the setting. The story also has a few time jumps but nothing so massive that the reader feels lost. Ezra and Julie's friendship for example is largely told over a few sentences, yet their dynamic feels similar enough to when we last saw them while still being clearly more friendly. It feels like a natural evolution
Overall, this story is a bit of a commitment but if you can tolerate small grammar issues and long chapters, I think this could be a real treat - The AmadeusRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0"This feels like a lovely novel! I love the way you've brought out Ezra's character, and how you make his friendship with Julie feel so real. (To be honest, I'm a bit jealous!) So far, it's been good. My only problem is that the chapters are a bit too long, but that's a me thing - I can have a really short attention span. But it's a lovely novel!"
