A dark magical girl and defector who found a soul in the light of the world’s greatest heroes. She turned her back on the Ashen Reliquary, joining the Starlight Blossoms as Magical Girl Star Zinnia. For a few brief years, she learned what it was like to be human. Then, the sky broke — and the monsters came. They fought and they fought. And after years of struggle against the invading Azure Blight, her reality unspooled into nothingness. The few she loved were erased before her eyes. The heroes are dead. The world is ash. Now, the forsaken Ashbloom finds herself awake beyond the rift in an unfamiliar world - with a jagged blade, a really big gun, and a singular purpose: to show the horrors beyond why they should have killed her first. ...Or at least, thatisstill the plan. Unfortunately, she somehow finds herself deep in suburban New Jersey, stuck babysitting a team of newbie Magical Girls who think the"Power of Love and Friendship"is a valid tactical doctrine. Shehatesthat they're right. - TheBestofBothWorldsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I adore this story so far. First person narration sometimes puts me off but this author uses it so well. It really brings things to life and gives everyone a personalized touch! I love the switches between protagonists. It is very easy to tell who is your POV character even without the clarification at the top of the chapters.
You already know a bit about Reimi based on the blurb, but it falls together so neatly in the actual writing. I can really tell there's been a huge loss, and that this new situation is incredibly confusing and disorienting for her! The tension it creates is somewhat funny, but it's a gripping situation to watch.
This is just very well written in general. I also really like how the system is used. I haven't read many system books but I really enjoy the mechanics of the merit point system and how that can be used to make purchases. I would recommend this for people who enjoy magical girls suffering and facing situations that are not typical for magical girl media. I'm looking forward to seeing how this story unfolds, and to see if Reimi can let herself back into a group once again! - ZhurenaissanceRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is very, very good, and you should give it a chance sight unseen if possible. Now a review:
The sounds of western guitar follow the footsteps of the cameraman as he walks up to the farmer, tending an open book growing out of the ground. The farmer looks up and towards the camera and gives a salesperson's smile.
"Well-I-say, lookie here." The way he says here lands on a flat 'ah' sound. He takes in a deep breath to enhance the anticipation. "I may just be a humble word-farmer, lawyer, doctor, and philosopher, so you don't have to take my word for it. But, I say, I say! This here is some of the finest crop of words I've seen this year!"
He dusts his hands on his canvas pants and tears off a page, eating it directly. "Mmm! Mm mm. The Style is sharp and to the point. It comes in with a strong flavor and doesn't let you down. The prose is clear and you can feel the respect for the tropes and genre grown right into the page."
Standing, the word farmer faces the cameraman directly. "Story-wise you've got yer blend of reincarnation, world hopping, fate looping strangeness to add onto the base of a Mahou Shoujo tale. Our Doom-Girl has many secrets yet to tell and I'm jumpy as a jackrabbit in june to find out more."
"Now speakin of secrets, there is the core cast of Magical Girls to consider as well! While each has a clear archetype to pull on, I'd like to see a little more differentiation and lore behind each girl's life, but I'm bettin' that's just a matter of time." The camera nods wordlessly, it's a bit disorienting.
"Grammar? I don't know why you would ask a humble word-farmer about grammar." - vivifaeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is for those who both love edgy girls fighting through darkness and despair, and wish for these characters to find a way to heal and be surrounded with the love and care they so desperately need and deserve.
0042, or Reimi as her friends call her to her immense chagrin, is a magical girl from a doomed world. After being taken by those she was destined to destroy, and being unable to prevent their doom by the that same hands that originally guided her, Reimi is a girl full of regrets, with little left but hatred for those who both shaped her into a living weapon and took those from her who showed her she could be more than a tool of destruction.
Meanwhile Maya, or Star Morganite as shes called when out on a mission, is just your regular run of the mill magical girl, trying to figure out her place in the world and working with her team to fight the darkness encroaching upon the world where most of the world just sees an economic boon to be harvested for the local economy. Stuck deep underground and desperate to escape after her and her team get caught out by monsters well above their pay grade on what was supposed to be a regular scouting mission, Maya and her team inadvertently free what looks to be a magical girl nearly as monstrous as the beasts they were just running from.
Despite their warniess due to Reimi's repeated threats, both explicit and implicit, the novice magical girls decide to take her in. After all, she did just save their lives from certain doom, and she seems to be hurting from something much worse than just physical wounds. It does help that she also clearly surpasses the team in both power and knowledge when it comes to their shared fight against chaos, and is willing to work together as long as the girls don't push her buttons too much. Besides, after losing all of her companions and living in tortured solitute for so long, maybe Reimi wouldn't mind some company that doesn't try to kill or abduct her for once.
Now if only the girls Re - LoyalvyRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I have never read any of PizzaPizza's works before. I wo chienuinely started this exclusively because of the "Lesbian Romance" tag, as a self-proclaimed yuri fae. I'm really glad I did.
I was loving every second of this story, but the chapters that cinched it for me were Recollection 3 and the succeeding chapter. How both of them start exactly the same. I had to check and make sure I had actually moved on, but once I realized that I had, my heart sunk, and my respect rose.
Reimi is the clear standout here, despite basically every character being a masterwork. She comes off a little as an angsty teen sometimes, but the story knows it, and it's a part of her whole vibe. She's mistaken for someone angry at nothing, someone vapid and selfish, when her core is completely different.
I'm really glad this story spends so much time in the present, and not the past. Personally, I think Reimi's recollection chapters are the best chapters of the whole story, but it's because they're so few and far between that they're special. The fewer and farther between they get, the closer Reimi gets to healing.
I hope she can find some comfort, peace, and maybe even love. - OnmurRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I love me some dark and troubled protags. When they don't suck and flop into the cring side of the Force, that is, which, sadly, is the case, most of the time.
Fortunately, Reimi is not in the 99%. Without spoilers, she carries a huge weight that's bigger than she thinks, and suffers for it. Even if she manages to still keep to her values, that would be too much of a downer on its own, so that's where the other characters come in.
The rest of the cast manage to be their own, believable characters with depth, while providing Reimi both the relief she needs and challenges to overcome. The jaded veteran-naive newbies dynamic is done very well.
At times, the characters can be a little info-dumpy, specially when it comes to their past traumas, that's the only thing that broke me out of my immersion a bit, that's why I'm giving this 4.5 rather than 5 stars.
The characters' backstories being revealed little by little is also very interesting. It leaves one wanting to find out more. On one hand, there's some very recognizable tropes at play, while, on the other, there's still plenty of events and details to find out about.
