Fighters use supernatural powers to climb a global leaderboard and enter the Ultimate Versus tournament, where the winner — the #1 Fighter in the world — can have their greatest wishes granted.

And Daniel Chase needs to get home. A seventeen-year-old teen from Chicago, he’s always loved music more than fighting games, but he must battle his way to the very top to earn the chance at wishing himself back. Even worse, the System labels him a Joke Fighter, and only gives him one technique: a counterattack.

A retired top fighter unexpectedly offers to train him, and Daniel seizes the chance to learn from a master. But, as he further grasps his counterattack and prepares for a local tournament, top fighters are dropping dead worldwide. Someone is trying to take over the Ultimate Versus — and every victory brings Daniel closer to the lethal truth.

Don't you hate when you wander into an alternate universe with fighting game mechanics and only end up with a single move? No? Maybe that only happens to me, and to the MC of this entertaining story. Counter is loads of fun, and manages to achieve the perfect blend of speculative fiction "what if?" alongside realistic people, all in a fun and instantly familiar setting of an Earth that could have been.
If you're into fighting games and love precise reactions, combos, and counters, then this is the story for you.
If you like self-reflection, growth, and relatable characters, then this is the story for you.
If you're a fan of thrillers and conspiracy, with crazy plot twists and reveals, then this is the story for you.
Starting to sense a theme? Regardless of what your preferred reading style looks like, there's bound to be something here you'll love. The prose is clean and the narration never gets in the way of the story. Characters have depth and motivation, and they're genuinely fun to read about--there are heavy moments, but above all the story is a great adventure that's grounded in good characters.
Personal preference: I wish we had fewer point of view changes, or perhaps more main story content. The side plots are good, but I would have moved them later into the story so that we build more momentum and connection to the characters first before escalating the stakes. That's my only quibble, however.
    Highly recommended!

Really enjoyable start to a series here. Need to get myself over to Kindle Unlimited now and pick up the rest of it. Nicely drawn characters, detailed world building and a very effective style make this a really enjoyable read. Looking forward to seeing where this all goes on from here

A very high quality story, an unusual isekai themed around fighting games. MC has a unique power set, the training arc is fun so far, my only complaint is that the non Daniel/Carmen segments are too long.
Chip is adorable, send him my regards. I also like the diversity of the story, it's rare to find litrpg with a Black MC, and the number of supporting characters of color is high. (Is Gigabyte based on Cyborg from Teen Titans?)
In conclusion, a good story for isekai fans and fighting game lovers alike.
for my fighter: Bluesky, a lightweight zoner who fights with cloud themed projectiles. General cloud/ meteorological theme. Perhaps lightning, but I don't want to step on Carmen's toes. Another good name for a cloud character could be Nimbus. Maybe a cloud strife/FFVIII reference..

Of why it is a good thing to find a story after a very suspenseful confrontation!
Not to spoil anything but the recent showdown today started on the train was beyond epic! Very rarely do I sit on the edge of my seat hoping for a specific outcome to happen....and even though it didn't (this time), I can't help but be glad to know that the author is going to do that moment justice!
Seriously if the less important points of the story, even have me on edge than the culmination of the main point of the story is going to be bloody epic!

The characters aren't realistic at all. You've got the random bar owners that let a homeless man live in their home taking their teenage girl into fighting arenas without asking for any ID.
The protagonist is super quick to adapt to this new world, it's honestly ridiculous how he goes from "I just got isekaid and almost died" to "let's become the best fighter in the world" in less than 24 hours.
Of course as typical trash rr stories go he meets a girl in the first chapter that he ends up living with, and the girl is gonna become a fighter like him and they get a training session where he can't bring himself to hit her because she's his alternate universe crush and bla-bla-bla...
I may seem unnecessarily harsh, but this had so much potential. I don't care about the 1000th fantasy isekai with an elf harem that ends up being trash, however "counter" could and should've been way better than whatever the f*** this is.
As far as I'm concerned the grammar is fine, the style is a bit "flat", by that I mean that there's nothing to write home about, it's not bad.
    I really believed in this.
