Broken Soul

Description

[Winner in the Royal Road Writathon challenge April 2023] Broken Soul is a story that tries to give another take on the whole isekai thing by not actually having a real isekai character. This story is a high fantasy story following the son of Count Cedric Rowan, Michael, through his life of learning, fighting, and rising to his duty. It is designed to be a slow-starting and accelerating story because it starts with a quite young protagonist and is supposed to be long. What you can expect: - Kingdom building - Slowburn - No Harem or other weird stuff - Fun? Hey people, this is my first time writing a novel so it probably will have its problems. I would very much appreciate any feedback, as I am quite unsure about many things. English is also not my first language so any corrections would be also appreciated. Currently, I am doing one Chapter per week. Profanity: There will be swearing but not excessively so. Gore: As there will be battles and war later on there will be descriptive violence. Traumatizing Content: There will be cruelty and traumatizing stuff happening to characters but as I don't really like it myself I probably won't describe it too much but it is just part of a somewhat realistic medieval setting.

  • Although I haven't read it very far, I really like it. From the beginning, the author knows what he wants to write, and I don't feel any hesitation in doing so, which I've encountered with many novellas where the beginnings are hesitant to sometimes awkward…

Although I haven't read it very far, I really like it.

I like that even though it's an Isekai; it's also not an Isekai. It's an interesting concept. I also like how the author incorporated something of a "witch hunt" into the story when the MC exhibits odd behavior. Actually, I don't like stories where religious representation is too present, but the author has done it subtly.
The development of the MC is also slow, which is perfectly fine with me. I definitely support the slow development of the MC so the reader can connect with the MC better and experience more of his hardships and successes later on.
The secondary characters are also nicely done. Of course, I like his Guardian Knight the best.
All in all, I have to give 5 stars because nothing really disappointed me.
And as someone who is not a native English speaker, I won't rate the spelling; I wouldn't have seen them anyway.

I commend you for being something special from the usual in the field. The development of the Mc is good and the events are great.
Maybe you should lower the mountain advantage so as not to be a cheat item, such as granting to the crown half taxed.
And I didn't really like the main character getting Some ideal value ideas . I'd rather follow the standards of his time by judging by force and intelligence.
It only sets standards for the nobility and does not abolish it.
Thank you for writing this novel, keep going.

Great novel, the slow progression is awesome and it’s greatly written.
    spoiler:
please acknowledge his broken soul more. I don’t really get it, can he do magic with no downside. did the calming soul potion help. Is he permanently weaker. Is he still good with augmenting or did the soul thing mess with that too. It’s frustrating cause he got his soul broken, said “he can’t do magic no more” proceeds to do magic. and in de next 20 some chapters the only thing I read is that he looks for a new affinity.

One of the best stories I've read on this platform, it keeps you engaged and wanting to always read more! That characters have in depth storylines that influence their behavior while also showing how human they are. The author is able to portray the weakness in each character in such a way that not only can you understand how they feel but also see how they overcome their failings, an overall great read that I recommend to anyone.

Just finished bing reading to get caught up and I’m loving it so far. Like how human you make all the characters. They aren’t overly powered and make mistakes and have complicated emotions which make them so relatable. Can’t wait to see what happens next, Keep up the good work!

One of the most well written books of the genre, perfect for those who like dragon heart, defiance of the fall, ranger's apprentice etc...

I honestly feel this book is extremely underrated and I'm not sure why it doesn't have more followers.
The charecters are very believable. To be honest this book does the side charecter a lot of justice. They are not just plot points but living parts of story with their own arcs.
The plot is amazing. I loved the plot twist at the end of book 1 and it added the right amount of shock and mystery. It took me by surprise but didn't make me angry at the author.
The MC is not the embodiment of perfection. He makes mistakes that hurt himself and the people around him which makes him more believable.
I love the fact that we don't clearly know who the main antagonist of the books is. The book gives all the villains believable arcs as well.
The world building is good. The world exists on its own and isn't existing only for the MC's case.
The grammar is also good and I haven't seen issues that takes away the immersion.
All in all, I cannot recommend it enough.
The only problem I can think of is the slow release schedule but if that is what keeps the quality high, I'm fine with it.

It’s quite excellent. Well written, and the pacing is good, but the story isn’t an action adventure. It’s more nuanced but the story builds slowly and is character driven which does a good job at pulling you into the story. It gets you invested. There are a few scenes that were dark, not relaxing but heavy. It adds to the story, but they weren’t my favorite parts. Still, well written. I was invested and felt strong emotions.

This is a very good story, well-written and thought out. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole story. Highly recommend it, it leaves you wanting to read more!
Overall the story has good pacing and the characters generally have good development. It also doesn't feel like nothing bad can happen to the MC like in a lot of royal road stories.
