- LifeWisherRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Where to begin?
The thing I loved most at the very start of this novel was how it instantly broke multiple tropes while continuing to use others skillfully in future chapters. The doting parents taking out their child to help it grow to acquaint it with adversity was a particular stand out.
I also loved worldbuilding so far. There have been no info dumps as far as I can tell, although they rarely bother me, and we learn a lot through simple dialogue between Abeni and her parents. I have to say that with only 10 chapters out, we already have a very fun and unique idea taking shape, with a lot of promising elements that remain to make a bigger impact on the story.
Abeni’s character is another standout. I love characters who have been left with room for emotional growth too, instead of only focusing on the power aspect of things. It is hard to execute and a slippery slope sometimes, but I think we have a great thing going on so far.
While events happen a bit fast in my opinion, the author still somehow manages to make readers emotionally connect with the story so it becomes a non-issue. I honestly don’t know how that happened, but it did. Respect for that.
The grammar is very good, with nothing weird going on. I noticed only a few small mistakes.
I think a more frequent posting schedule would do this novel a lot of good and allow it to gather a bigger audience much faster, but slow is better than none. Especially when it comes to unique little gems like this one. - M3CR_1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall this story is definitely amazing from what I've read and I've seen pretty much no bad qualities.
Style: Definitely one of the more unique stories I've seen in a while, especially with all those litRPG in sight. The words don't feel convoluted or anything and I can actually imagine what the author is trying to portray.
Grammar - Very good grammar. Just slight grammatical errors here and there but it's rare. I love the way the author makes use of imagery and literary devices. It doesn't feel forced at all and not overused.
Story - To me it feels like the plot is moving along just right. Allowing the reader to feel satisfied and not wanting more in the plot so far. I can tell that the setup is giving me a clear picture of the future and I have some theories.
Character - To me, this is the author's strongest part. The author's done very well at allowing the reader to relate and feel for the characters in their interactions and different situations. It's not like their character is a robot and actually has a personality of their own.
Definitely a must-read and with determination, I could see this becoming successful! - OsiriumWritesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Full disclosure: This was a review swap, but my goodness did this story surprise me. I absolutely love it when a story shatters your expectations!
Now, onto the review without spoiling too much.
Character: This is the strong point. The main character is believable and unique. Sure, there is the obvious power aspect involved, but what drew me in the most was the emotional/mental aspect. You see her break off parts of her innocence and replace them with a more mature and colder perspective. She’s wonderfully flawed, making it easier to relate to her, although she can still surprise you in fun ways.
The style and worldbuilding were also wonderfully woven into place. There wasn’t a mass of info dump, which you frequently see. Instead, you get your hand held as you drift through the story and organically learn more about the world. The only real downside here was that the occasional ‘big event’ happens quickly, while you’re still processing the last one. It could be a personal style to keep up the heat, but the occasional extra chapter to process it all could work as well.
The grammar was fine, without breaking my immersion. Upon closer inspection, you can spot a few errors here and there when you look under the hood, but nothing a decent editor or another once-over won’t fix. (Think passive prose, the occasional comma, or dialogue tag. Nothing big). The best part was that the author kept the prose tight and varied it well. You don’t get flowery, drawn-out sentences that bloat the story. Sometimes you get a complex sentence here, another time you get one word that hits... hard! - PenguinsAreScaryRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really liked the story and what it hints at about the environment the story takes place in and would love to read more. This story had me interested in the main character Abeni quickly. She seems quite bright.
Spelling is impeccable and the style is easily followed.
I would love to read more! - DarkodiaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5"Abeni's Army Escape The Underworld" is a gripping tale that artfully blends elements of fantasy, adventure, and emotional depth. Set in a vividly imagined underworld, the story follows the journey of Abeni, a young girl celebrating her thirteenth birthday in an otherworldly maze with her parents. The narrative begins with a warm and familial tone, highlighting the loving relationship between Abeni and her parents. Their interaction is filled with laughter and affection, setting a contrast for the darker events that unfold later.
The underworld, as depicted, is a place of danger and mystery. Abeni’s curiosity about the labyrinth and the creatures known as ẹda drives the plot, leading her family into unforeseen peril. The author skillfully builds tension and intrigue as the family navigates the maze, encountering various plants and fungi, and hinting at hidden dangers lurking within.
The story takes a dramatic turn when a monstrous creature attacks. The parents’ protective instincts and supernatural abilities are revealed in a thrilling confrontation, showcasing their love and dedication to Abeni. This scene is particularly well-crafted, blending action with emotional resonance.
What stands out most in this story is its exploration of themes such as trust, innocence, and the harsh realities of growing up. Abeni’s transition from a carefree child to someone confronted with life's brutalities is heart-wrenching. The narrative captures the essence of a child’s perspective, with Abeni’s internal thoughts and fears adding depth to her character.
Overall, "Abeni's Army Escape The Underworld" is a compelling, emotionally charged story that masterfully combines fantasy elements with a poignant coming-of-age narrative. The vivid setting, strong character development, and intense plot make it a memorable read. - Little RacoonRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The beginning of Abeni's Army drags the reader straight into many mysteries, both of the world and the people that inhabit it. Although each chapter isn't very long, it does enough to explain what's going on and to dive just a little deeper into the titular character's thoughts.
Style: 4/5. The writing style is smooth and easy to read. Though the use of bolded and italic words may seem excessive at times, it does reflect the style of a thirteen-year-old narrator well.
Story: 5/5. For how little words the author used, the story is presented very well. Quite a bit happens in the first two chapters before slowing down in the next three, most likely to build up for future story arcs. The introduction of different unique terms in the world do not seem jarring at all, creating a vibrant, new world that seems to be vaguely tied with real-life earth.
Grammar: 4.5/5. Mostly very good, though there were some minor mistakes that distracted a little from the flow of the story.
Character: 4.5/5. Abeni, the story's titular character, is believable and possesses an interesting, nuanced personality. I think some readers might've already linked her to a certain personality type with how clear her character is. However, in the beginning she seems a little too childish even as a thirteen-year-old with her words, not that it detracts much from the rest of her personality.
Overall, the story has a lot of room to develop. The author likely has prepared a clear plotline, but for now, the opportunities are limitless.
