A Terran Space Story: The Commander Saga

This is a sequel to my previous story, A Terran Space Story: The Lieutenant Saga.  Our titular character has finally reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander.  With his ship seriously damaged and due to be in repairs for several months his crew has been reassigned or they've taken, without his expressed blessing, for other opportunities.  But the Confederate Navy is not about to be wasteful in a resource as valuable and capable as John is.  A new mission is presented to him, one with potentially dire circumstances for the Confederacy as a whole.  But to do so he will have to shake off some rust and go into enemy territory to determine what is happening and to sow as much chaos as possible.  With such an astronomically risky mission, will he succeed?
