- AcrinoeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A New God, Betaverse book 2, by Menilik continue his explorations with exploring and terraforming worlds, real and virtual, with his unique characters leading the charge.
Style: Menilik’s descriptions and evocative and amazing, painting a picture for his vision of the future. Trying to blend a story that exists in both real and virtual settings is a challenge that Menilik captures well.
Story: I need to go back a read the first book. Tons of awesome concepts are being introduced, some that were fleshed out in the previous book, but there are plenty of hints and details to bring a new reader like me up to speed. The author is experienced at World building and his characters literally are building worlds. I love it.
Character: Exploring and making new worlds is a key focus in this story, but character development is there as well. Despite graduating from mere biology, the cast still struggles with death and loss and meaning. A sound lesson that even godlike power csn’t solve all problems.
Grammar: Somer errors to be found but nothing disruptive enough to derail a scene or readers enjoyment. The author is delivering a sound tail with skill, and some clean up might be needed later.
Overall: the story is still dropping chapters, but I'm investing in the quests of the cast of characters. Icarus, Trillion, and especially Peter. I hope to see a lot more of this worldverse as the story continue ps to unfold. - FallhowlRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have loved your novel and your thought process on all of this, it's hit me in the feels. I used to love reading Sci-Fi books but they all were generally the same, I love how your novel is like a Sci-Fi version of Fantasy.
Keep up the amazing work and know that your novel is loved and sought after. - Marc MeaneyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I read this on Kindle in a couple of days - this is a fast paced and exciting read that it un-put-down-able... highly recommended.
The story develops and deepens the characters that were introduced in A New Eden... and we really get to grips with what compels them. And so much more depth in the universe too - but even as the explanations emerge even more mysteries develop. I mean... the New Gods - what the heck?
I'm looking forward to the conclusion to the story in the next book and hope to see it here on Royal Road - but I urge everyone to click through to buy it for Kindle. It's well worth the money. - MysticMaverickRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's a sci-fi world with lot of techs but doesn't go around just one biggest greatest invention changing the world. It explores various interesting ideas and uses all of them while still developing more.
It doesn't go around just creating one big problem to solve. It makes us explore the universe with chars, we watch char encountering problems then coming to solutions in multiple different directions.
The chars are enchanting, you feel connected even though there are so many different perspectives. The activities they do in their free time is most hilarious to read.
The story is nice, but I feel like it was too short for me.
Going critical here because a advanced review requires 200 words.
The story had a good start with a lot of unknown to explore. But when Peter reached them, it ended almost abruptly.
That not an ending, it's a premise for next volume, I understand that a lot of authors do this (some do this even after 3500 chapters) but it feels to me like author doesn't know how to give closure (maybe it goes wrong with reader to give closure, I don't know). But I love those stories that know how to give closure allows the readers to rest and go running for next adventure with next volume (ex - HP series). Otherwise, it gets tiring, there are already so many novels ongoing, it feels like you keep reading and reading to never getting to it, for which you started reading it.
The style is superb with info while not dumping a lot of info it keeps the story moving smoothly and explaining the working of tech.
Overall, a wonderful space exploration and colonization adventure with wide array of interesting tech. - PaulieDRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I loved the first book in the series and this is even better than the first, it's so captivating and I like the mix of cool tech, god-like near-immortality and complex manouvering of the characters. I see this is the author's first series he's written so I think this guy is one to really look out for. I'm a fan of authors who write bobiverse, undying mercenaries and expeditionary force and I find it hard to find good series/authors that I like but I'm now adding M Dyer to my list. Keep up the great work!
- T.A.L DeasonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is part of a review swap. With that being said I haven’t read the first book in the series, but I will be listening I g to it on audible, it’s available there so go check it out!
styles- anyone familiar with Sci-fi and theories relative to the metaverse will love this book. The story is well written and the author has a very firm grasp on the theories that are discussed. Honestly I had never heard the term Betaverse before this book. The story does dive pretty deep into those two realms but in the best way.
story- again I didn’t read the first book, but the story is well written. The pace is energetic and the characters are great. The story follows two groups of characters. Atlas, Icarus, and trillion who are trying to find peace and seed new worlds (there is a really cool meditation scene.) and Peter who was dead but has been resurrected in the metaverse and is working to be brought back to life in the physical world. The story is deep, detailed and great and I can’t wait to listen to the first book, did I say it’s on Audible? lol.
grammar- very few mistakes, a couple of misspelled words but definitely not an issue. Overall the author does a great job here.
characters- the characters are definitely the shining star here. Trillion, Icarus, and atlas are good but I don’t know much about them. Peter on the other hand comes out of the gate swinging. He has swagger and personality and drive. A fantastically built character!
overall I can say you should read this, it seems like a really well written interesting story. However if you haven’t read the first book then you should go check it out ITS ON AUDIBLE!!!! - VetTelisunRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: Full marks here. Every time there’s a perspective switch, you can pick up who we’re following within the first couple of lines. And everything’s tagged, so that helps too. There's not much I can add here.
Grammar: Again, nothing much to complain about here. There are a few instances of editorial mistakes that may crop up here and there, but since they don’t quite fall under grammar, I won’t be docking points for them. A New God works well from a technical standpoint.
Characters: For this review, I’ve decided to discuss the characters purely as they appear in this story and this story alone. There are many characters here, and it’s difficult to talk about anyone without getting into spoiler territory.
As mentioned before, it’s easy to tell whose perspective you’re on through grammar alone. However, each character also has a distinct voice, which helps you really latch onto your favorites. I found myself going through ‘Peter-withdrawl’ every time there was a switch to Atlas and his crew. But that’s not a negative. If anything, it’s a credit to A New God’s strength in characterization.
Story: And this would be where a few issues might arise. The first few chapters are a bit slow to pick up. For the fans of the first book, they’ve already fallen in love with the world, so they’ll have plenty more to sink their teeth into here. But for newcomers, it’s a bit of a slow build-up to the wider mysteries and conflicts on the horizon.
In the beginning, the story’s much more focused on exposition and lore. But in choosing to stick with it, everything just sort of starts to click, and suddenly you’re finding yourself more and more invested in what’s going on out there. It’s a sci-fi mystery, after all. You’ll have to be patient.
So overall, I’d say pull up a chair and enjoy the ride. You just might like it. - skrublordRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Interesting Sci fiforwards with a steady and fast post speed. Quite a few typos/spelling erros so if that is a problem this may not be for you. Nice pacing to keep you engaged but also keeping most of the cast relevant and keeping you invested in them. Interested to see where it continues going fowards.
- Vachel ThevenotRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A New God is exactly as it is advertised: a fun ride through space, with super interesting technology and concepts to boot. And boy does it deliver on the concept side of things. I’m a huge fan of high-concept stories, and A New God absolutely takes its main idea—the seeding of new worlds in an age where much of society exists in a simulated “paradise” (yes, the quotes are intentional), and runs with it as far as it goes.
Every story element is driven by the simulated setting, and there is constant, super-creative usage of the artificial nature of the metaverse that much of the story takes place in so far that permeates every chapter. Sci-fi fans (especially fans of anything simulated in stories) rejoice, because A New God is a great dive into a high-concept world that has yet to really miss from a story standpoint. The mysteries that are being built are intriguing and keep me wanting to learn more.
The characters are interesting and well-written, especially one in particular who I will not name due to potential spoilers. I love the moral quandaries that they have to face while living in their simulated existences. Aside from that, I don’t have much else to say on them without spoiling anything.
The style is good, clear, and it is fairly easy to tell what is happening (which can usually be challenging when writing in such a different setting). I like that the author isn’t afraid to dive deep into imagery when describing a cool new detail the characters discover, as those moments are where a story can be at its richest.
A New God’s greatest weakness is its grammar, as there are sometimes sentences that break off at unexpected intervals, or editorial mistakes that can prompt a double-take of the sentence you’re reading. While it can be potentially distracting and break the pace of the writing at times, ultimately, grammar and editorial mistakes are the easiest to fix in a story, and in general, they become less frequent the further you read.
In general, I would highly
