A Son of the Dragon

Description
In a world where magic and lineage dominate the arts of politics and war, Vlad is the dispossessed heir of a fallen house whose powers have been locked away. In the Sultanate, he and his brother Radu are little more than pawns, hostages whose original reason for survival died with their father, the Dragon, when their cousin usurped their father’s throne. When the newly crowned Sultan Alaeddin puts his princely rivals and steam-powered mechs at the vanguard of his army, Vlad is swept into the action by his brother’s foolish desire to be accepted by the Turks as one of their own. With danger comes the opportunity to prove himself a useful pawn. Useful pawns can earn a little freedom and favor. Yet that battle is only the beginning. And favor and freedom is not the same as loyalty. Vlad may be the sultan’s soldier for now, but he will always be the Dragon’s son.

- gostsamoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is one of the rare occasions when eastern Europe gets some fantasy representation and it is not about vampires. Arguably, it is about the one who inspired the mythos in an indirect way, but no bloodletting with culinary intend so far, so it passes the local version of the Bechdel test. If one disentangle themselves from the historical and political implications of the story, the narrative is rather enjoyable including kings and intrigues, beautiful maidens ravaged by hot blooded men, battles here and there, and all kinds of excellent pastime oh, mai entertainment.
Do recommend. - RedtherulerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Love the fact you took vlad the impalers story and made it into a steam punk and fantasy story. - Sang RealRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Book sprint is finished. It’s very good so far, lots of quick action and rapid storytelling. The story can repeat itself occasionally, but there are subtle differences to show what each characters are thinking. Chapters are quick to read, I consumed the whole story so far in around a hour.
- SirealismRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love that Vlad the Impaler is getting a story from his perspective, and in such a cool setting too! The gaslamp fantasy is also really well integrated into what is a very interesting time in history without sacrificing any of the interesting historical tidbits.
Style
I love gaslamp, but it almost always happens in Victorian England. Don't get me wrong I love Victorian England for a setting, but it feels very limiting. This story steps way far away from Victorian England and handles it very well.
Regarding the writing style, it's excellent.
Story
The story is based on a very interesting time in history that's already inspired many stories in the form of Dracula. However this is from the perspective of Vlad the Impaler, who is usually seen as a madman by folks outside of what is now Romania but it's something of a hero in that part of the world (though with a tinge of fear). An interesting man with an interesting story.
Character
Despite the fact that this is meant to be a story based in history (though obviously it's not historically accurate being gaslamp) the characters are still unique to this story and developed in depth by the author. The side characters all have their own motivations and flaws making them and the story feel real.
Grammar
Great no comments - TheFartRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The book starts at around 1453~ at the conquest of Constantinople by the ottomans, this world seems to gave mages but they are rather randomly around and teachings are passed through generations, there's no formal mage teaching system, the plot is alright following Vlad Tepes(son of Vlad Dracula or the Dragon as in the book) who lives his life at the ottoman court
There are too few chapters to say anything more about the book but the thing that bothers me are the names, the author uses the Slavic names of many things, I am a Vlach(Romanian living in the South)myself and I gotta say the mc name is not Vladimir it was Vlad and they didn't call Constantinople tsaringrad, he slavicized the vlachs too much, even though indeed at the time the language and culture was more influenced by slavs as of now - WonderWizardRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I haven’t read through it all yet, but I’m definitely setting this on my read-later list! So far, I love the setup—magic, ancient history, love scandal, oh my! The world feels rich and immersive, and I can’t wait to dive deeper into it. The author has done a fantastic job making everything feel alive, and I’m excited to watch the story unfold. Looking forward to reading more!
- JolligreenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This book, set in a historical context but sprinkled with lots of tasty steampunk and magitech elements , is quite different from the usual RR fare. It’s as much political and social as combat oriented, but the stakes are high, progression feels earned, and it’s definitely a great read worth sinking your teeth and time into.
- ToldiRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story is set in the same world as Accidental Warmage. While this story hasn't had the chance to reach the same heights as that story, it has pulled me into its world. Probably the simplest way to sum up the premise is someone looked at history through a kaleidoscope of magic and war mechs. Most of the places, nations and characters will have their historical counterparts, while also retaining a uniqueness that draws you into the story even further.
The prose of the story flows smoothly, and I haven't found any grammatical mistakes so far. The characters we were briefly introduced to come across as multi-dimensional with their own agendas (rather than being puppets for the sake of the plot). We might not get to meet Mikolai in this story, but I am more than happy to follow the story of Vlad as he discovers his heritage.
The story blurb introduction captures the feel and theme of the story quite well. What it doesn't convey well is how well the story is woven together. Every interlude adds a new dash of color and brilliance to the story. If any of this caught your interest, I suggest giving the first few chapters a shot. Or if you are truly brave and wise, binge read Accidental Warmage before it gets stubbed and come back here. You won't regret it. - celerRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5The author has an interesting world, some good characters, and some fun notes. But I can't recommend it nearly as strongly as I do Accidental War Mage or Duke's Decision, which at least so far so the same but better. If you're desperate for more, then enjoy! He does continue to deliver.
