Valterion: The Space/Arch? Mage

Description
Meet Sara, the long-lost daughter of two of the most powerful Mages in existence. Follow her as she discovers her powers as a Mage, makes friends, accidentally gets a super-powerful AI, and finally finds a way out of the Mage-hating nation she grew up in. Accompany her on her journey through the galaxy where she discovers her origin and much, much more. Magic is real and made space travel possible. Humans were finally able to leave the Solar System! Now, thousands of years later, Earth is only a distant memory. The whole planet was lost to envy and greed. The reason? Simple! Not everyone could be a Mage back then. Advances in technology leveled the playing field, resulting in conflicts still happening today. Expansion led to system-spanning nations. Some are Mage-friendly, some are not. One rule stayed the same throughout the millennia: Space Mages are essential for travel between systems. Imagine finding yourself being one of them in a nation that exploits Mages for their power. Sounds fun, right? Sara disagrees. And so her journey as a Mage begins. Start reading now! New chapters every Monday. What to expect: - First person, present tense with a few third person POV shifts - Magic to support space travel, fights, and utility things - Main focus/inspiration is combining starships with magic - Soft Sci-Fi: technology just works or magic is used to bridge the gap - Low Fantasy: no elves/dwarfs; magic in a futuristic real world setting - No romance, but characters are alive and might enter relationships! - Exploration of the galaxy - Academy/College arc with other things mixed in, starting around chapter 90 - Profanity tag just for occasional swearing

- RicrosRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I found this about three days ago. I am hooked. This is a great way to loose time. There is humor, tragedy, a little bit of moral dilemma. The characters to me are good they way they are. This is Sara's story so I am not really worried about everyone else's life's. I like that the story continues and does not bog down over what everyone had for breakfast or how the starship was cleaned in detail. Now it is time to wait for the next chapters.
- BrGastlRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0We are not far into the story. To early to give it a decent review. Though I can say grammar is good. Worldbuilding and character development seems to be there and while we don't see much, I can already tell it has good potential for drama and action. While the author made already several tries at more advanced writing techniques like time skips and has done so greatly. Overall an easy read through all chapters so far which made me search for a Patreon icon. Give it a shot definetly worth it.
- Kallisti93Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0My brother recommended this to me. It's a bit too wholesome for my tastes, but it reminds me a lot of Cinnamon Bun (also very positive).
I enjoy the premise of the story (magic + space travel) and the author has obviously thought about the mechanics of how magic works. There are currently 148 chapters posted and thankfully the author seems to be going strong with updates (as opposed to randomly going on hiatus).
The grammar is pretty hit-and-miss. Comma usage is not based on grammatical rules but instead as a way to..how to put this..create pauses and emphasis as if for the reader of an audiobook. Also, the author seems to forget to put in "will" or " 'll" relatively often (e.g., "I do that" instead of "I'll do that"). There are some pretty common spelling mistakes (e.g., rein vs reign) but nothing too egregious.
It's definitely worth reading...particularly if you like wholesome stuff.
For the author, I would recommend finding a friend who is both meticulous about grammar, spelling, etc and willing to proofread.
Thanks for writing this story for us. I look forward to Sara's future shenanigans. - MaliticusRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Over All: This is a story about exploration and its many meanings. The main character spends a lot of time exploring things about herself, the world around her, her found family, and later even her blood family. The combination of magic and star faring civilization is interesting in the way that it is implemented in the story.
Style Score: The style of the story is pretty young adult fantasy in scope, but it is relatively well done with the emotional maturity of the main character and her found family taken into account. Personally, I would like to see some of the more ancient characters (those who's age is measured in centuries) act a bit more mature, but one could also say that those that have been introduced so far are acting more whimsical to put the main character at ease.
Story Score: The breadth of the story is pretty ambitious and it can be felt at times with how long some explanations can take, but I feel that the author does a good job showing as much as telling. The combination of a lost orphan finding her found family leading to her exploring the stars in a magic starship and eventually finding her blood family as well certainly leads to an interesting story.
Grammar Score: The author writes in English mostly well, but difference in idioms and sentence structure can sometimes really stand out. I would like to see a bit more editing go into chapter releases, but the story is perfectly understandable if a bit jarring at times. Granted as a Southerner from the US this is absolutely a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
Character Score: This story has many characters to follow and many more added to help move the plot forward. Both the dynamic and static characters are written in a very young adult novel style and their antics tend to be performed through the same lens. Considering the age of the main character I find this to be a boon for the story because it keeps some of the darker elements more light hearted. This might not be for everyone though. - DaithiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love the way the author combines science and magic. Nice coming of age story for a orphan. Easy to read and nicely paced. Check it out.
Characters are interesting and the setting unfolds nicely. Has a solid YA feel in a good way.
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Or words to that effect. - DlorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It’s an enjoyable read, fun but not perfect. While there are some issues with the story it’s worth reading and the author is rewriting to make it better for the early chapters. I binge read all of it in two days, can’t give a better review than that. I recommend you give it a try.
- FahnirRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a wonderful story about a young woman without a family who discovers she has magic and sets out to explore the universe and find her family. It has wonderful characters and a very enjoyable plot. I love how she discovers more about herself and grows as a person throughout the story. The author also has created a fascinating mix of technology with magic. Great Job!!
- GrayloreRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a story with a lot of potential! Enough that I'm going to be a little generous with the score. The feel I get from this story is less Science Fiction with a side of magic, and more Space Opera. Honestly, I could see this developing into something a lot like the Firefly series. And I ALSO believe this story might do better turned into a screen play and sold to a studio. I could see a great TV series being made from this. But let's drill down a bit. The author has stated this is their first published series, and you can see some of the rough edges here. But at the same time, you can ALSO see the author going back and smoothing some of them down, and taking on board various reader comments to assist in doing so. This story is a work in progress, but I could see that polish gradually appearing, even without professional editing assistance. Both the Style and Story score I've given reflect this. The grammar, however, already seems pretty much perfect, though I understand some editing already took place including improvements to dialogue. There's a general nod to science fiction in the writing, but magic is used somewhat frequently to hold together the plot (particularly to maintain ancient structures so they can be explored). That said, the magic system is interesting and generally appears to have internal consistency. The pacing here can be a little rough at times. This includes some time jumps, and then other places where the story smashed through a section too quickly, without fading in the edges and satisfying me as a reader. One of the results of this is that although the MC is pretty vivid and well written, many of the side characters arrive and depart too quickly to develop much depth. While the MC will be getting a crew later, she doesn't really start with one consistently accompanying her, which is the main reason I marked down the character score. It's not that the characters aren't well done here, but if they aren't around consistently you can't really de
- CyuriaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I don't normally leave reviews. Or even ratings. So much so that I usually forget about these sorts of things. But the moment I read an author's note which reminded me of them I immediately favourited and left a five star rating. As of the time of writing this review, RR stats say there are 864 pages of story, but I swear it felt like 200. I started reading less than 48 hours ago and have already caught up :(. I've probably averaged 20 pages of content every hour since I started reading this story (and more than two chapters an hour). If I have any gripes with the story it's that the protagonist encounters a lot of luck, but I'm happy to suspend my disbelief and tbh that's what stories are for. I also maybe have a few minor disagreements with some of the world building stuff which to me doesn't make sense. But I do feel that without those the story would probably be less engaging, and I wouldn't get to complain.Tl;drWhy are you reading my review? Read the story instead it's so much more worth it (unless you're the author in which case why aren't you writing more chapters).I have never read a better sci fi story. I'm not going to say it's the best story I've ever read because I've read a lot of books, webnovels, etc and there's possibly a better book or something that I just can't remember right now, but this story is most definitely a strong contender. Also I want more chapters :(I know this is after the tldr already but I just scrolled down and read another review that disliked the time jumps and I have to say I really liked the style on which they were done. It seriously cut down a lot of fluff and bits which kept the story much more interesting. Hmm maybe I guess I didn't like the prologue quite as much as everything else (it's great, just not quite as much as the rest of the story imo). I do think it adds some very helpful context though which pretty much shaped my experience reading the first big part of the story and I wouldn't want to have not read it.Edit:It's
- XargonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is thoroughly enjoyable. The first 20 chapters are a bit rough, but once you are through them, the author develops a nice pace and style. Light read, friendly friends and evil villains. All you want in your space opera. I am about 40 chapters in now and I have read most of that in the past few days. Good stuff.
