Seventeen-year-old Malcolm Sinclair arrives at the prestigious Enshin Academy in the Japanese-inspired kingdom of Kagetsu as a diplomatic admission after his parents die in an accident during trade negotiations. Grieving and displaced, Malcolm finds himself in a rigidly traditional culture where his Western directness and practical approach immediately mark him as an outsider.

During his initial assessment, Malcolm discovers that while most students have large "soul spaces"—internal dimensions used for storing items and practicing alchemy—his is barely a meter wide and features a strange black pool at its center.
