You won’t regret it if you like this type of novel!
- OriiRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The writing style in "A knight's journey through life" is highly engaging and immersive. The author skillfully employs descriptive language to vividly depict the training regimen at Hexenguard. The use of vivid imagery, such as Roderick's thunderous commands and Tika's awe-inspiring display of magic, brings the scenes to life. The pacing is well-managed, effectively conveying the intensity of the training and the wonder of magic. The incorporation of dialogue is natural and effectively conveys the personalities of the characters.
The writing demonstrates a high level of grammatical proficiency. Sentences are well-structured, with minimal grammatical errors. The author maintains consistency in verb tense and effectively uses punctuation to enhance readability. There are a few minor instances where sentence structures could be refined for even smoother flow, but they do not significantly detract from the overall quality of the writing.
"The author presents a compelling story set in the world of Hexenguard. The narrative provides a detailed and immersive look into the rigorous training regime that recruits undergo, highlighting the importance of endurance, technique, and intelligence in combat. The introduction of magic adds an intriguing layer to the world-building, offering a glimpse into the potential power that Zerial may possess. The inclusion of the Mage Empire of Estoria and the discussion of power dynamics within a magocracy enriches the story's broader context. The pacing is well-balanced, with the training scenes providing intense action and the introduction of magic adding an element of wonder.
The characters in are well-developed and distinct. Knight Commander Roderick is portrayed as a stern and demanding figure, emphasizing the importance of discipline and endurance. Master Scholar Tika is depicted as a passionate and knowledgeable instructor, with a deep love for the Sacred Arts. Zerial stands out as a character with a unique affinity for potential, hint - UbernoobRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a review for up to chapter 13.
The author writes very well with great grammar and knows how to develop characters. I especially liked the second chapter where you show gerald and zerial knocking on each other in a wholesome way while watching the parade of knights. You have some of these moments in later chapters but not standing alone. That single scene showed gerald had grown to at least like the boy and he didn't keep up the facade of being his father strictly for his friends and lords honor. Im interested to see later on if he had to choose between his friends and honor or his adopted son which he would choose. I could see him becoming a tragic hero like snape in harry potter.
Your writing reminds me of game of thrones with the slow burn. It can drag on in spots but thats pretty common with this style and i can see why its done. This did make aquiring his new graduation sword and armor impressive and more of an accomplishment. I can see more of these instances build up and eventually culminate into a truly memorable character. The only thing that sticks out that could be done better is some of the dialog. For instance when zerald and his mage friend were introduced when he messed up and broke his nose he kept calling her acolyte when no one else was around. I understand they are supposed to keep up appearances but they were alone, young, and supposed to be friends. It just felt stiff and odd. It makes sense when others are aroud though.I will definitely keep reading as the issues it had were all minor and most everything else was done very well. - DragonHolyVoidRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Note: that this is in reference to the prologue and first chapter.
As far as the story itself, it is a classic and well thought out storyline. A child taken from his family for his own safety, being raised by a close friend of the family. Your character description is pretty good, but you lack environment description. You never gave a description of the room that the birth was taking place in. I believe that leaves too much open space for the reader to fill in while reading the story. Now, that doesn't mean that you need Tolkien levels of description but a general layout of the room and appearance is warranted to the readers. Simply describing the characters and leaving the environment to be determined by the reader is only writing a script not a story. An example of the description I believe that you would need is a starting layout of the scene for the reader.
The couple held hands in the luxurious bed, residing in the main bedchamber of their castle (or keep, up to you). The windows remained closed with the night sky dark behind the thick drapes adorned with stitching's of flowers of all kinds. A midwife and knight were the only others present in the dimly lit abode, waiting to perform their appointed tasks.
Overall, the writing is very good. I like it. - Little RacoonRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5As a coming-of-age story of a knight, the story delivered on its promise and provided a generally light-hearted, comedic read to its audience. However, the slow pacing of the plot itself sometimes made progression through the chapters a little bit difficult, unsure of the future direction of the story as a whole.
Style: 3/5. The comedic overtones of the writing style is present throughout the story, but compared to the very serious prologue, sometimes the jokes went a bit too far, creating comedy for comedy's sake. Still, the author creates a lively atmosphere with his style, something I hope will be greatly contrasted with future chapters when the promise given from the prologue is delivered.
Story: 4/5. As mentioned above in the review title, the story is a slow-burn, meaning not much actually happened in the first five chapters. Progression is there but gradual, so one will need significant investment into the world itself. Thankfully, the world is well-built, and though details are given in the form of infodumps sometimes, generally introductions are smooth.
Grammar: 4.5/5. Nothing too major except for punctuation at the end of dialogue text.
Character: 3.5/5. Zerial, the main character, is well-established as the story is set from his 1st person perspective. However, a main detriment of that is the relative low focus of other characters, and with how many are introduced each chapter, it becomes difficult to remember them all along with each of their personalities.
Overall, the story is decently written and the author is clearly very knowledgable about the way his world works. If you read serials for the long-run, then this story is for you.
