- BenBurchRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love a good 'villainess' story, but find the stories repetitive, thankfully not an issue here. Not only does the story scratch the villianess itch, but it does it in a unique way neither an Isekai, or a 'regression' story.
The characters have the right amount of silliness while very real stakes haunt them. The plot moves along at a great pace, the threat keeps you guessing, and the characters develop steadily, and the comedy! I laughed out loud multiple times reading this, while also feeling legitimately invested in the characters, a tough balance to strike. It is one of the few things I've read here that I'm happy to describe as Pratchettesque.
It's something I'm looking forward to reading more of. - DC ZhenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Now that the story has ended, I want to leave my final review of it.
While I like villainess stories, most of them get very formulaic after a fun start and sort of meander their way to a typical happy ending. This story is absolutely nothing like that.
This story grips you with its central mystery - who is trying to kill the villainess and how is she going to stop her murder using nothing but a very strange precognitive power tied to a man she’s never even met before?
From there, the story just barrels on without stopping, introducing amazing new scenes, twists, mysteries, and set-pieces. It is a thrill-ride where there’s a hilarious joke and important clue or fascinating character interaction or intense action sequence in every chapter. There is not a single wasted or boring chapter!
The characters are also lovable and memorable. Regina, the villainess, is hilarious and brilliant. She’s flawed in a way that makes sense but also brave, clever, and willing to do absolutely anything to survive - which makes her antics amazing to watch. Artem, her prince fiance, is just wonderful and adorable and the type of fun, off-the-wall character with far more to him than meets the eye. The rest of the cast also have interesting stories and secrets.
Finally, I’m happy to say that this novel has a stunning conclusion that makes sense of the MULTIPLE conspiracies raised in the story.
I won’t spoil the epilogue for you, but I’m sure you’ll be as surprised as I was. It hit me in the gut and I’m still thinking about this epilogue now.
The only drawbacks to this story are (1) some minor grammar issues and (2) there are a lot of twists to the story. You’re probably going to spend hours binging this story just as I did, so be prepared for a lot of excitement if you do! This is not a slow-life story!
Anyway, 10/10 fantasy mystery story with a great plot, characters, world-building, and ending. If you love villainesses, mysteries, action-adventure series with protagonists who have to fight - EbrettRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Early review (only 6 chapters in) but I’m really liking this story so far. Initially started out with a classic villainess story premise; you know, visions of the future, arranged marriage to a prince, another “villainess” condemned at a party. Except, what’s this about deadly family dynamics? Why is the main character calling herself an in-bred shut in? Why does the prince (and currently presumed male lead) frolic so much? All the classic tropes of Villainess storylines, but with the humor and clever twists to revitalize one of my favorite types of stories .
The cookie cutter characters are not so cookie cutter. The “future knowledge “ is bewildering and questionably helpful (at the moment). And I’m (at 6 chapters in), not so slowly becoming addicted to learning more about my two new favorite characters to read about. Hoping the author takes pity on me and not only puts out chapters faster (because I’m impatient), but makes a full story (outside of their upcoming game) so I can have the pleasure of what’s shaping up to be a great ( and hopefully long) story. - Gray Word ArtsRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Full disclosure: I have read this story over on SpaceBattles. I only recently became aware that Villainess Wants Her Husband To Live was published here on Royal Road!
Before I even write anything else? Recommended. Highly recommended. Just favorite this novella now and save yourself the trouble.
This story follows Regina Sheridan, a petty noble of a savage and political realm called Carcosa. She lives with a wretched family who all have a number of things off.
However! The Sheridans have a secret power. The magic they wield is precognition, triggered by highly individual conditions. Regina, alas, must use her powers to not only survive Carcosan politics, but also help her one true love survive.
One catch: He has the survival instincts of a goldfish.
All the characters are perfect, and tightly written, with both obvious and hidden motives. This story is fundamentally a mystery, and in the final chapters, you may need to pull every thread to figure out the big final twist!
The strong characters lead to an amazing story. While the mystery is driven by Regina's unique precognition magic, the gambits of each character all come to a head at some point or another. As a result the plot basically propels itself as naturally as if it had actually happened.
The style is also amazing. The author has a mastery of comedic writing that's apparent from chapter 1. She also combines ideas from A Song of Ice and Fire, with the zaniness of Discworld...and maybe also Rimworld...to create a work that can go from gutbustingly hilarious, to warm and loving, to abjectly terrifying, and back to absolutely awesome.
The particular shine comes from the grammar. The author has a way of using the simplest sentences for the biggest impacts that many others, including this reviewer, struggle to emulate. Her sentence structures alone are a writing masterclass.
In short, this is a perfect, to the point romantic mystery. Why are you still reading this? The story's way better than this review. Go read - K4m30Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Oh, this story is over, so I guess i need to leave a final review.
This story is a wonderful piece of literature and i highly recommend it.
The characters are complex, their interactions well thought out and developed.
The language is considered and intentional. changes to structure and pacing match the part of the story and evolve over time.
themes are explored with depth and nuance.
It's just all around great. - amphyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It’s bizarre this story hasn’t reached more people, it’s so much fun to read. The characters are wonderfully endearing, the pacing is great, and the twists are really interesting. I’ve really enjoyed this story and even though it’s not quite finished, I have complete and utter faith in the authors that the ending will be thoroughly satisfying (and hopefully be a very happy one for our two main characters!)
Artem is truly the sweetest dove, a bird only surpassed by the almighty duck! - cyotasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0One of the best book i have read. I usually dont like this kind of story when its not some kind of isekai, but damn did the author nail it. The epilogue also nearly brought me to tears.
A few too many twists and turns, the author likes to have mystique and shock in the story, but its not egregious and it either tolerable if you dont like it, or nice if you do. - superlloydRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0It feels like I can't quite find the right words to honor the story as it deserves. So here is a mundane, bullet point list of relevant facts about this story.
- First this story is very refreshing by departing from over used tropes on that site (ie. no litrpg, the story is not about endlessly levelling, in fact there is a story!)
- It is reminiscent of the non-horror Lovecraft related novels. I mean obviously, it happens in Carcosa after all! But the endless assassination attempt, the family that can't be trusted, the magic that is both present and often too mysterious to grasp, even MC's own - misunderstood - magic talent! It all contributes to an atmosphere best qualified as... Merry madness I suppose?!
- It is a detective story. Don't expect much in the way of combat scene. It's a positive. There will be assassination attempts, assassins, hiding in the night. But no need to use 10 chapters and 9 cliffhangers for one combat to move on. The story and Regina finding out who she can trust or not is what it's about! And getting it wrong most of the time! :D
- With all those mentions of madness and assassins; I should mention that this story is not a horror story. I would say it's more of a fantasy-drama-comedy-romance kind of story.
- Overall, the story is a delight and would give it a 110% score. Except I had one pain point around chapter 35-39 where I thought drama was a bit contrived in a fashion that reminded me of many American movies where the female lead overreacts for no sane reason, but maybe it's just me. And it could be argued it was reasonable. Anyway, that's why I gave it only 4 stars.
- Finally, as it is mentioned in some various reviews as a possible relevant critic. Grammar and style are flawless all along. - tikiiriaRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This story had a good style, a chaotic insane but entertaining world and good detailing of the characters. The world and back stories were well done. The grammar was fine. While the story didn't hinge on repetitive and overused tropes; it did just have too many self created and exexternally induced twists that became numbing. The MC has her moments and the rest of the time is a bimbo. She creates more issues for herself than she should given her power and she can't take a hint even if someone hit her in the face with the clue.
