- TerraScaleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0My first proper review on Royal Road, so sorry if I make any mistakes here.
Story:
The story is great with lots of interesting worldbuilding scattered throughout, though never in a huge lore dump thankfully. Every location visited has a little bit of flavour to it, no one place ever seems the same here and all of the villages have some reason to be where they are, be it a mine or simply a secluded location, which goes a long way to making places feel more realistic.
The plot itself tends to have very small short term stakes with a couple huge stakes overarching the entire story. The vast majority of the time it is a very cozy story with a couple outliers where you'll be blitzing through chapters to see what happens next.
Pacing wise the story is rather glacial, things change over a large number or chapters but they do change, if you enjoy long books that take the time to flesh everything out you'll enjoy The Non-Human Society
Style:
The story switches from one of the main character's perspectives to the other each chapter and works very well for the story allowing the author to selectively reveal information based on the perspective.
Grammar:
On the whole pretty great, minimal typos and a responsive author see to that. With one minor exception: Ellipses, which are overused quite a bit but are ultimately a minor problem
Characters:
The characters are the main focus of the story so it makes sense that they'd be great, they react realistically and have distinct ideals that always make their interactions with others interesting. The length of the book works in the characters' favour here, where they are able to slowly change over the course of the book. The side characters are all held up to the same standard as the leads which is lovely.
All in all one of the best books on Royal Road, if you're on the fence about reading this then just do it, trust me, you won't regret it! I know I certainly don't! - XoxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0OK, I want to.get this part of my review out of the way first: this is a romance story. I have never been interested in this kind of book. Understand that it is a slow build-up though
After thousands of pages and being married for a year they have kissed 1 time briefly. It is very odd.
My joke to my wife when I was binge reading this was " I am reading my romance story again". At least there is no sexual content. OK, with that out of the way I can say why I love this story in spite of the "romance": the world building and characters are awesome, technically it is well-written, the fight scenes are pretty good, and most important I want to find out what happens next. There is also no swearing. This really is a wholesome book, outside of some violent scenes. I really recommend this story. I didn't believe I would like it, but it turned out to be one of my favorites.
P.S.: Get Renn a new sword ASAP--and a sharp one this time!!! I don't like her being treated as a helpless damsel in distress needing protection. She is a big cat! Geez... - Jaded JohnRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Never expected this to be my first review on this site, but here we go. The Non-Human Society is, much as its title would suggest, the tales of the inhuman or partially human members of the world portrayed therein, their love and joy, their sorrow and wrath. The main story is a slice of life following the two main protagonists, Vim the Protector, and Renn, his comparably young traveling companion, during their voyages to various members of the Society, all the while gleaning small insights into both figures obscure and troubled pasts.
Character writing is where the story truly shines, the protagonists being key examples of said quality. Vim is an enigmatic and stoic individual, a seemingly immortal and nigh-invulnerable guardian of the many scattered groups comprising the inhuman members of the narrative, with a hidden and bloody past to discover over the course of many chapters. Warrior, leader, laborer, guide, he's been all that and much more over the many long years of his existence, but there are things even one so long lived as he has yet to experience. Renn in her own right is just as interesting. Having lurked on the edges of human society for the majority of her long life, she has no concept of the Society and is incessantly curious, acting as one of the main means of wordbuilding via her discoveries and insights, all the while acting as a near perfect foil to Vim with her friendly personality and comparatively fresh perspective. There are many more similar examples to list, but it is better to experience than to be told to moi.
The prose found throughout is well written for the most part, laced with more than enough detail to provide a vivid picture of everything happening within without getting too wordy or poetic. Chapters consistently flip perspectives from Vim to Renn and back again, with the current narrator being listed in the chapter titles themselves if one forgets. Grammar on the whole is solid with a small collection of errors to correct, but Vari - DaoistfLkaoqRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It is my first review on the platform, thank you for having me.
The story is interesting to me, I see a lot of potential in the little secrets of the world that get slowly revealed. There is a lot to learn and appreciate from the history, technology standpoint, political situation, the hidden past and interactions between the characters. It is detailed, rich and in flux. Finally it is delivered in a way that it is easy to digest.
The grammar is my only minor setback because there are some typos here and there, thankfully it is not a big enough issue that it breaks my immersion. Besides, the author pays attention to comments and edits so overall the quality is satisfying.
This style of alternated perspective between the main cast is new to me but I got used to it quicker than I thought, such that I actually realize now that sometimes, I look forward to a certain character point of view depending on the context. It is an original way to stand out and it serves the story well.
Most of what I really like in this work is about the characters: their past, circumstances, regrets, emotions... All of them weither I like them or not are described in enough details that it is straightforward to define them physically and mentally. Although, the main cast is of course a cut above the rest as expected, the side characters are still very alive as well. And from where I reached in the story, there are many of them. So it is a very enjoyable pattern of behavior to see the main cast interact with them for the good or the bad. I have my favorites.
Overall, it is a great ride in my opinion and I look forward to read more.
Honestly, I can only hope that you give the characters the time to grow on you because it is worth it. - Solis_Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style:
The style of this story is very good and the author is good about paying attention to words and phrases used based on the time period and ties it back into how the story as a whole works. For the type of work this is I think the style fits very well.
Grammar:
I noticed a few mistakes throughout my reading but unless I was really paying attention to mistakes I did not notice any glaring issues and it did not detract from the story at all for me.
Story:
The plot to this story is very good. Each conflict makes sense and developments are not made out of nowhere. Out of character decisions do not happen and the way the story progresses feels very natural. The world building I feel is also phenomenal as the story progresses with more and more things being revealed and the setting being developed. With how good the world building is the plot progresses smoothly and everything that occurs is either foretold well or is coherent with the overall tone of the story.
Character:
The characters in this story are incredible. The two leads are probably in my top 5 characters of all time. They are compelling, unique, and very well made. Most of the side characters feel natural as well, with very few of them seeming to similar. My favorite part is how I feel like I could read dialogue between characters without needing anything defining which characters they are. The way each character is written ties so well into the way they speak that I am almost never checking which perspective I am reading from. Some of the best dialogue I have ever read. - RahtaeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I'm getting closer to the end of the current available chapters. So figured I'd thank the author by writing a review!
For readers that are interested in a slow-burn somewhat low-fantasy that emphasizes character relationships and detailed world-building, The Non-Human Society offers a compelling and emotionally resonant experience.
While the pacing is described as gradual, it allows for a thorough exploration of the characters' growth and the intricacies of the world. The story balances moments of coziness and gloom, creating a narrative that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking.
The alternating perspectives between Renn and Vim was something I had not come across before. It was a bit jarring at first. But it grew on me, allowing for a subtle exploration of both Renn and Vim's experiences and the world they live in.
VarianMorn just keeps dangling tidbits of Vims and Renns past before my eyes keeping me coming back for more! I greatly recommend this to anybody that wants a wonderful story to read. - AzureForestRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Not exactly sure why this is light on traction, but it is a delightful read.
Some of my reservations for recommending it:
-In hindsight the earlier chapters feel as if the world building is incomplete, rather than just unrevealed.
-it's a fairly slow character driven exploration, sitting in the slice of life category more than action.
- it reads more soberly, for lack of a better term, than most other content I have run across here.
-one character comes as across as a little too unbalanced at times, this isn't really an issue for the more character driven sections but due to the lack of struggle can make the action feel a little anticlimactic (not really an issue but it takes us further from the usual action centered content here).
As for why I'm recommending it, the prose is solid, the characters actually feel like their developing smoothly,
