Description
They summoned him to save their world. He answered the call to adventure. And then… he got distracted.
Back on Earth, Logan had a bad habit of getting off track. Even after landing his dream job, the expectations of his family and boss quickly overwhelmed him. Of course, that was before he woke in a secret cave to a perilous surprise.
Now he’s stuck in a world with strange prophecies, relentless monsters, and quests that spiral out of control. And there’s one important rule: level up or get eaten. Too bad it’s not that simple.
On Day 1, he’s tangled in a dragon’s feud, neck-deep in undead cultists, and somehow charged with saving gnomes from extinction.
Running fetch quests is one thing. But elsewhere, a secret invader has summoned something else. Something savage. And it’s hungry for more than blood…

- alanigeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0While I am not fully up-to-date with all the chapter releases, I am fully engrossed in the writing. I've only read a handful of LitRPG-style stories so far, and this one is easily one of the more clear, lucid, and conceptually whole that I've read.
There is a clear storyline and a clear arc and a whimsical and entertaining cast of characters. The author is able to write each character in a unique voice and personhood so no one feels like a carbon copy of the other. There are multiple lol moments and a few cultural references, which are delightful to come across. It is fun to watch the main character, Logan, stumble into his new reality and figure things out in real time. The author introduces a lot of small details, and there are no wasted words because these details usually come into play later in the story.
I am looking forward to the release of the rest of the chapters and seeing how this story fully unfolds. - Richard BondRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is just what you are looking for, as long as you want a likeable protagonist ist in a weird and interesting world wandering around and trying to figure things out.
Dunno about you, but that's mostly what I am doing in the real world, and reading about someone doing it in magic-land is a joy. The protagonist feels like a person, with some doubt and some internal conflict. They spend some time rescuing chickens and figuring themselves out... Which is pretty much how I like to think I would behave in a new world as well.
The world building is nicely done without too much exposition or too little explanation. I'm honestly curious to learn more details of the world and to see how our hero progresses. I want to see what his skills lead him to and how the chickens end up doing.... They are clearly in danger, but it almost feels like there is a chicken-diet out there protecting them.
So far we have several unexplained quests and a weird barrier and lots of sparkly mana. We have a protag who is weirdly proud of his caveman-style homemade claws... Though I confess I have an ugly device or two I built that I love just as inexplicably.
Stop reading reviews and go read the story. - 1chipaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I identify with the struggles of the protagonist, having myself troubles with low self steem. I hope more people get to read and appreciate this work. Althought a little reluctant when I started followinf it, I'm really enjoying the flow and novelty of this story. Good job and keep it coming!
- chambersRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0“Side Quest” is the kind of story that makes you glad you clicked on the first chapter. It starts off with familiar LitRPG elements (a sudden isekai, a blue system window) but it quickly changes into something more thoughtful, tense, and actually well written.
The main character, Logan, is probably the biggest reason this works as well as it does. He’s not overpowered, he doesn’t make dumb decisions for plot reasons, and he doesn’t magically coast through the early stages. He’s smart, practical, and constantly scraping by on a mix of logic, grit, and sheer stubbornness. Watching him figure things out under pressure is half the fun.
The writing is clean and tight, with system messages that feel integrated rather than gimmicky. Logan’s internal narration is grounded and just snarky enough to keep it from getting too heavy. The pacing has been strong so far. I read all 10 released chapters in one go without getting bored. The worldbuilding is already showing depth, too. You get the sense there’s a bigger picture behind everything, but it doesn’t dump lore on you all at once. The Kalashi wights section in particular was a standout. Chaotic, creative, and surprisingly strategic.
If I had to nitpick, a few of the early fights had a lot of moving parts, and I occasionally had to reread to follow everything clearly. Also, we’ve mostly just spent time with Logan so far, and while he’s more than capable of carrying things, I’m curious to see what happens when other characters enter the picture.
That said, this is one of the stronger openings I’ve seen in a while, especially in a genre that’s overflowing with generic power fantasies. If you like progression stories with actual stakes and a protagonist who uses his brain, this one’s well worth checking out. I’ll be sticking with it. - Chaos KatRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Still pretty early days. Interesting so far, but many questions waiting to be answered. Magic system is cool, but a lot left to understand and explore. The character is coming along. I like the side quests, though they do give non-main characters a bit of an npc feeling making the world slightly less realistic to me. Amusing and fun overall.
- Shaggnasty22Royal Road★★★ 3.0This is a very interesting world....but. It has some issues that drive me crazy. The MC wastes the two free lives he was given, only survives because of plot amour.
This story has a lot of potential. I just can't get past the constant use of plot amour. The MC blabing this secret to very single person he meets for 5 minutes.
Maybe the story grows into something great. I just couldn't get past my gripes about this story. Good luck author - UmmRoyal Road★★★ 2.5Was fine at first but around chapter 40-42 I noticed missing sentences, dialogue, etc. story became incoherent & hard to follow due to these issues. Hopefully it's just a simple mistake that gets fixed, maybe the author posted a draft version instead of the final version by mistake? I don't know, but I stopped reading bcos of it.
