Enjoy a LitRPG wish a dash of Warhammer, a smidge of DnD and a modern twist tying to together? This is the tale for you…
[Reviewed at Chapter 6: Wing]
Style
This one is a mixed bag: the first two chapters are so heavy on prose it veers into purple territory. There is far too much detail given to some aspects, and not enough to the places it is needed.
Then it hard pivots in the following chapters to be far more digestible, utilising prose where necessary and expanding upon details appropriately—a welcome change! From there the style stays far more consistent and I much prefer the latter approach. The former could be just as great, if trimmed somewhat.
Story
The story is pretty fun, but a bit confusing.
It takes place in the world of Albion where the Wild Hunt assaults the planet, killing many.
There is also a force known as The System, that locks everyone into a LitRPG stat system.
I hope I explained that right? It mentions The System in the prologue, Chapter 1 flips to a warhammer purple description of an epic battle, then doesn’t mention it again until the MC wakes up to System messages.
Noone has told him about it, which seems counterintuitive as he swiftly needs to choose a class that is non-refundable. I played season 2 of Diablo IV, got to the end, and found out the mage I levelled was trash in the endgame. If that were real life I would be so, so mad…
But I digress, the story is very fun and has an interesting premise: if it was worked into the first chapter better, it would definitely sing. Small nitpick, easily amended.
Character
Artorius is a young man whose legendary father has suddenly passed away. He must attempt to live up to his legacy while adapting to The System.
He is organic and likeable. No notes.
Grammar
I have helped our where I can, dear author, but this really needs an edit. I hope my suggestions were helpful, but I leave the rest to you :)
Overall
Overall, an enjoyable read that marries se - HonestDevilRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story pulled me in right away. It mixes game mechanics and old myths in a way that feels fresh. The world feels big, strange, and detailed without drowning you in rules. I liked the idea that the end of the world comes from people’s own hobbies and imagination. It gives everything a nice bit of irony without trying too hard.
The opening battle grabbed me most. It felt intense and clear, and I could follow what was happening. The fall of Caer Syllan hits hard. You get the sense that the world already had history before the main story starts, and I enjoy when a book gives that kind of weight. The last stand in the prologue left me curious about what happens next instead of just setting up another fight.
Artorius works as a lead because he feels practical. He reacts like someone who’s confused but trying to stay calm. The choice for him to take a leadership role instead of just swinging a sword gives him a bit more personality. The tutorial part had real tension. You can feel how rough it is to survive in this new setup. It made me care about how he’ll adapt.
The only thing that threw me off was the pacing. The shift from that huge opening to Artorius’s personal story felt sudden. It’s not bad, but it slows things down right after the high point. Once the action picks up again, it flows fine.
Even with that small issue, I really enjoyed it. The mix of myth, danger, and humor works well. It feels like the start of something big, and I’ll be reading to see where it goes. - Hounddf2Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a really strong piece of work. I will do my best to explain my scoring.
Grammar - no issues that I spotted outside of general editing.
Style - The author is clearly comfortable writing for an audience of fantasy lovers. the descriptions are rich and atmospheric heavy. The opening prologue and chapters are cinematic in their imagery, the language at times is genuinely poetic, and the author manages this without it becoming pretentious. The prologue reads like a Warhammer battle report - and fans of that ilk will enjoy this massively.
Character - Artorius is believable - he is terrified of the position he has found himself in, yet he is stubborn, which no doubt will be the root of his triumph. Chapter 4 see's the main character face "himself" in a mirror duel which is symbolic and lands well. My only criticism is that he is emotionally distant a lot of the time. His pain is believable but as yet there is no emotional connection with much outside of survival. There is still plenty of time for this to change though, and may or may not be the author's intention.
Story - The world feels alive and hostile, treading a line between survival horror and mythic fantasy. It is brutal in both events but also in it's writing. The reader is dragged along rather than having their hand held and guided. My critique here would be that the first chapters are all very intense, it is hard to follow with little to no emotional rests to provide contrast for the action.
Overall this is a stellar entry into the fantasy genre. If you like Warhammer novels that venture into the dark mythic territory this is something you would enjoy. - MildAntisepticRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The opening does a good job easing the reader into the world before everything gets turned on its head. The early chapters spend time setting up Artorius’s background, his family, and the weight of inheritance, which makes the sudden arrival of the System feel earned rather than rushed.
The transition into the System is handled well. It doesn’t feel like a gimmick, and the contrast between the cold, game-like mechanics and the myth-heavy world is interesting. The Dragon Nest in particular feels brutal and unfair in a way that makes sense for the setting, and it does a good job showing that this isn’t going to be a “safe” tutorial.
I also liked the class selection trial. Fighting a version of himself and accepting the wound worked well thematically. It feels more like a narrative-driven class than a pure power grab, which is refreshing.
At this point, I’m still not entirely sure where the story is heading long-term, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. There’s enough mystery around the System, the Dragon Eyrie, and Artorius’s bloodline to keep me reading. I am curious whether other Earth characters are going through similar trials, or if his experience is uniquely harsh.
Overall, a solid and enjoyable start with strong atmosphere and a distinct voice. The image links can be a bit distracting at times, but they’re easy enough to ignore. Looking forward to seeing how the story develops. - Peri_periRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Like the other review mentioned a LitRPG with a blend of Gods, Fae and Statblocks. The style starts overly purple but quickly finds its balance, settling into digestible, effective prose.
The story is fun, if initially confusing. On Albion, the Wild Hunt assaults the world as "The System" imposes LitRPG rules. The integration of this System feels abrupt—our hero, Artorius, must choose a permanent class with no guidance—but the premise remains compelling. Thrusts into an unknown world with not enough instructions and having to choose a permanent class.
Artorius(MC) himself is organic and likeable, a young lord grappling with his father’s legacy amidst chaos.Pushed too an unknown world without much of a guidance.
The grammar was good nothing I spotted wrong. The character and the word feels immersive.
The writing style is easy and somewhat poietic. It's easy enough to understand and also creatively written. The system is self explanatory at the right places without giving away too much information. The story is well paced. Revealing just enough information to keep us hooked and maintain suspense. Incredible writing skills.
Overall, this is an enjoyable read that successfully marries its concepts. If you seek a DnD-flavoured LitRPG with dense world-building and clear, thrilling action, this tale is for you. - SUrvivetheageRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0if you like dragons and knights plus a system apocalypse you’ve found a gem.
Our mc is strong but not unrealistically strong progression isn’t rushed side characters are memorable and it makes for a very enthralling read! Can’t wait till the history is a bit more fleshed out but we are getting there high recommended! - RuinBornRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This chapter is where the story truly earns its dragon wings. Artorius goes from drowning in a mystical yolk to fighting for his life against a Luck Dragon, and the raw, visceral energy never lets up.
Grammar (4.5/5) – Clean and effective. A few longer sentences could be broken up, but nothing that ruins the flow. The System messages are crisp.
Writing Style (4.5/5) – The author nails the sensory experience. You can taste the honeyed yolk, feel the crushing coils, and smell the scorched flesh. The shift from dreamlike wonder to brutal survival is handled well. The roar at the end is genuinely cinematic.
Character (4/5) – Artorius shows real grit here. He's not just a passive hero; he claws, bites, and improvises with a shard of eggshell. His moment of regret after killing the Luck Dragon adds depth. He's becoming someone worth following.
Story (4/5) – The chapter raises the stakes beautifully. The Dragon Eyrie feels vast and deadly, and the introduction of the Null Worm Dragon Elder as a lurking threat is a nice ominous touch. The pacing from hatching to combat to escape works.
Overall: 4.4/5 – A strong, gripping chapter. The author knows how to balance action, emotion, and worldbuilding. Keep this energy going, and the novel will be a standout. - ZacharyBinx-ukRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A strong opening for what promises to be an epic saga.
Style: This is excellent, the prolouge is especially good. The author makes great use of descriptives, and the prose has a poetic quality that is reminiscent of the epic sagas of old. It's not overly pretentious and does a great job conveying the sense of an epic age old battle between the forces of light and dark.
Grammar: Good, no major issues to detract from the general flow of the story, though a lil bit of a nip and tuck maybe required in the edit. The author is aiming for a chapter everyday though, a feat I'm not sure I could accomplish. So it's generally good.
Story: Very good and well crafted. The mystery of the system is well excecuted. How did Earth come to be embroiled in the fantasy universe? Can it be stopped? Should it be stopped? I'm only on chapter three so I'll have to read on. I also like the prominence of Welsh mythology, I'm assuming it's Welsh, because I'm an Essex boy, but it's great to see and learn more of this usually under represented culture.
Character: Also very good. Artorius makes for a great protagonist, you really get a sense that he was born and raised for the situation he finds himself in, and some of his quips brought a smile to my face. It would be nice to see a little more of a vulnerable side to him at times, the odd moment of self doubt, but again I'm still on the early chapters.
Overall I found The Mythos Chronicles to be an entertaing read. Keep up the great work. - oxygen5011Royal Road★★★ 3.0I think this story needs a little bit dullness and a sparkle of reality. Everything is mystical, multi colored, out of world, you name it. The pace is hard to follow, other characters and dragons are thrown at the reader making the story tangled.
Even at the beginning of hatchling part, there were 2-3 monstrous, mystic, mysterious, powerful dragons noticing mc. The first one noticed him because of his baby cry? Dunno, but it breaks the immersion - NoTime..Royal Road★★★ 3.0Overall not a bad story. I simply could not get immersed into it.
The characters and overall worldbuilding are very similar to other stories I have read. So for me this story ended up being pretty bland and repetitive. But the overall writing style/grammar is not bad.
I think its worth giving it a shot.
