Description

A young tinkerer's hands can fix almost anything in colonial Nueva Valencia. Still, Rafael Riveira can't repair his own broken memory - nothing before the day they found him bleeding at the jungle's edge four years ago. Then a monstrous rift tears through reality near his village, and everything changes.

The memories hit him like a hammer: centuries of combat, unmatched magical prowess, and a desperate last stand in another world. A world where the rifts weren't seen as convenient mining opportunities, but as harbingers of apocalypse.

Now caught between monster-hunting societies and scheming nobles in an Iberian Empire that runs on both steam and magic, Rafael must rebuild his strength from scratch. To prevent this world from sharing his last one's fate, he'll need to rise from colonial nobody to someone who can't be ignored, reclaim his former power, and somehow convince everyone that the real threat isn't the monsters coming through the rifts...

...it's what happens when there are too many rifts to close.

The setting is steampunk-portal-reincarnation. To start with, the politics and economics of the situation are very well done. The shortsightedness of the ruling class and the reluctance to affect necessary changes is excellently portrayed.
My main gripe is with the behaviour and actions of the main character. We are told that he is the last survivor of a fallen world with centuries of experience. What we see on the other hand is an impulsive yet indecisive boy with some advanced knowledge. He makes decisions based on emotions and survives death scenarios based on luck rather than skill.
The side characters also behave a bit illogically. The team gives leadership to the MC without raising a single objection. Other characters also provide disproportionate amount of assistance without revealing proper motives.
To summarise, the characters need a bit of polish to live up to the promising story.
