Swordfights. True Love. High Adventure. Epic Battles. Action. Magic. Reincarnation.I was 17 years old when I died for the first time.I parried the guard's cut, feinted high, then swung Swelfalster, blade of the fallen star, low for a slash at his unarmored thigh. I scored, a line of blood dripping down his leg, and danced back before his counterstroke landed. This is the chronicle of Velnin, Crown Prince of Tarmel, told through the dying words of his first incarnations. Vel is sent as a spy to the territory of the Black Citadel, investigating a newly rising power, the dark rumors surrounding it, and the fearsome might of its army: the Black Legion. In his journey he encounters the charming Aloree, diplomat of the neighboring kingdom of Talore. Healer, magic-user, diplomat, bookworm, her beauty belies hidden secrets within her.A fast-paced epic fantasy of swords, love, magic, and battles.Vel must protect the people of his kingdom, and make whatever sacrifices he must to end the horrors perpetuated by the Black Legion. But must he sacrifice true love itself for the sake of his people?"You write action so well! Style- This is a short easy to read format. Its not trying to be deep it knows what it wants and goes straight to the point. This would fit nicely in the gaps of the day I can imagine reading this while waiting for food to bake or while brewing coffee in the morning. You won’t need to set aside hours to enjoy, no note book is necessary to remember people places and the names of the factions.
Story- This part is the most interesting by far. I am used to reading things chronologically, this is almost told in reverse. The short format makes it easy to draw connections between scenes and motivations that would otherwise be confusing.
This is entirely driven by character. The short format of the chapters and fast pace precludes in depth world building or explanations of the magic system. There is a magitech level great enough to facilitate cloning technology, but people still use bows and swords.
Character- the MC can reincarnate, normally this wouldn’t be a character trait, but there is an emotional regression that adds an interesting spin to character development. He could have friends in one life and feel little for them the next only to build those up again while his loved ones suffer.
The format does cause the development of side characters to suffer. Things needed to be cut, and the two MC rightfully take up the bulk of the story’s attention.
Grammar- I found nothing that broke my immersion in the story, so its all good on this front.

I am enjoying THE LIVES OF VELNIN by Brian Heming so far. Heming writes fantastic action scenes that are full of visceral sword fights and imagery that captures the imagination. The story is uniquely formatted (with multiple flashbacks in early chapters), keeping me guessing about where it's going. This is good. I love an unpredictable read.
I am already getting flashes of romance, intrigue, and a detailed magic system (magitech, as you say) that I think will make for a killer novel when it's finished.
I like the characters a lot and I'm curious about where they end up together. I can't believe that the ending that is the beginning of this novel, is where we ultimately land. I don't want to spoil it—but that is the engine keeping me reading so far—I want to know what happens next for Velnin. And the title of this novel (as well as the hint about reincarnation) give me hope that he's got more to do! Thanks Brian.

This story is incredibly fast-paced and action-packed, with plenty of thrilling moments that keep you hooked. The action chapters are intense and well-crafted, with the action vividly described, but the gore is toned down, making it more like bloodless, ruthless fight scenes. When the story shifts to romance, it’s like a whirlwind. While this isn’t my cup of tea, I can see the appeal for readers who enjoy fast-moving, passionate connections between characters.
There are no glaring grammatical issues; the writing style fits the narrator's voice.
One thing to note is that the narrative jumps around quite a bit between chapters, so it can be a little tricky at times to keep track of which Vel is in the scene. You might need a second read-through to get the hang of it, but this constant surprise adds intrigue and unpredictability to the story. It’s part of what gives it so much charm.
I was invested in the first Vel, and his heroic death made it tough to emotionally connect with his replacement. I feel for Aloree, having to deal with all these emotional shifts.
Overall, though, the main characters have rich, compelling backstories, which makes their development engaging. The story keeps you hooked with its unexpected twists and fast-paced plot. It's worth a read for pure entertainment.

This story moved at the exact pace I like -- no fat, no dragging, just pure, raw storytelling driving the plot forward at a pace where everything is interesting.
The style encapsulates this with the prose and dialogue being easy to follow alongside the plot. But don't get me wrong, although it's fast it isn't simple. The prose is descriptive without being overly flowery which really immerses you in the world, and the dialogue feels human which is a massively important factor for me.
The only VERY slight issue I'd have is the paragraphs being relatively the same size throughout -- it could maybe benefit from single line paragraphs to give certain lines a bit of an oomph, but that's just me being pedantic. It won't take away from the story for 99% of readers.
Going to keep it quick and simple with grammar -- it's perfect. No issues here.
The story is really interesting, and the authors reverse chronology narrative is great at revealing bits as you go along -- who are the Black Citadel? Who's his brother? etc. which get revealed as you read thus giving you a strong incentive to keep going!
The characters are really fun and nuanced. From the main duo, to Pol, Jom, Canmar, and Lordan -- they all add something to the story, all feel distinct, and more importantly, don't feel flat.
Overall, if you're looking for a fast-paced, fantasy/ action story with a hint of romance underneath, I can wholeheartedly recommend Brian Heming's The Lives of Velnin.
I will be keeping up with it in my free time!

Written with fantastic prose and elegance. It is descriptive but not in a way that’s overwhelming which will surprise you when you see the length of each chapter. This is a story written by someone going against the grain and doing what THEY want rather than following the typical RR meta.
    Story
Wherever you think the story is going at the start you will be surprised over and over in the early chapters of the story. It’s a wild ride mixed with epic action sequences that dive into romance, treachery and conflict. Particularly when the reincarnation moments towards some of the later chapters at the beginning.
    Grammar
Really clear and easy to follow, credit to the author here. No complaints at all.
    Character
We follow the story of Veldin. The final reincarnation of Velnin. Armed with the knowledge of all his previous brother’s knowledge and a mighty sword. He’s not your typical protagonist, he’s emotionally there and caring, ready to dish out the pain when he needs to. Aloree is sweet yet smart in the moment. There’s a notable moment in the story involving the reincarnation mechanism with Aloree and Veldin. It’s loaded with tragedy in the build up and really makes you think what would you do in the situation.   The side characters help bring the story life with scenes involving Pol & Jom with little comedic touches whilst Lordan keeps things ticking over when it needs it.
    Overall
Engaging, with a nice blend of different genres. The fantasy and action really stands out with twists turns and you can feel stakes are ever present as the story goes along.  This is the type of story will surely leave you itching for the next release.
This story has change my perspectives on writing. Brian can write a fast story that hits right in as few words as possible, I'd love to try his approach for myself in the future.

There is a lot happening in The Lives of Velnin. I might be wrong, but in its first 20 chapters it didn’t go more than two consecutive chapters without some kind of martial combat. It also drops in world building and lays the groundwork on the role of magic and “magitech.”
And there’s the bit where the main character dies. More than once. (I’m not giving anything away that isn’t in the wonderfully-succinct and thought-provoking opening sentence.)
A lot happens in this story. Each chapter is rather short and yet filled with either interpersonal or physical conflict. But the author lays it down methodically. There’s still time given for a glimpse inside the MC’s mind as he problem solves certain situations. The story is written in the first person and if it were a person it would have two-percent body fat.
The character are interesting. I believe every scene I’ve read so far has been from the main character’s point of view. The side characters are provided with enough information to be likeable. Perhaps they could be fleshed out more but as fast as the story moves, it fits well enough. Perhaps the one I wished to see is the love interest, Aloree, be more of a three-dimensional character and less like a goal or an accessory. That said, she has plenty of foundation to become just that in later chapters.
The prose is tight and accessible without pandering, and the grammar is strong–no instances of mistakes pulling you out of the story. Whether it’s a duel, an escape, or shoulder-to-shoulder warfare, the action is quite easy to follow–that’s a difficult thing to do!
The Lives of Velnin is a fast-paced fantasy military story that keeps you flipping chapters. If the genres listed interest you, I recommend this book.

Before i start i want to say this. The lives of velnin has got to be the fastest paced novel i have ever read, and the author wrote it fabulously. The fast pace is part of the beauty of the novel and the story kept me hooked all through book 1.
The story is incredible, its fast-paced, action packed and keeps you hooked on every chapter. it hooks you from the first chapter and refuses to let go. The whole death and coming back in a clones body with his memories is a fresh take on the reincarnation trope.
The grammar was good, i didn't notice any obvious errors and the authors writing shines through.
For me the characters had to be the best part, the author really made me fall in love with them in just a few, short chapters. Each of them have their own distinct voice and velnin is an amazing protagonist. Of course Pol is the best character by far.
The style is easy to read and understand, short, fast paced chapters that keep the story going and goes straight to the point without flowery words or over descriptions.
Overall the lives of velnin is an amazing work of fiction that promises to hook any reader. Even if romance is not your taste it's done well here and makes the characters shine. It;s an amazing novel that i'll be sure to continue reading.

Warning!  - Some very light spoilers below.
Action: The action is great, delivering the swordfights and epic battles promised in the blurb.  Velwin’s fights are wonderfully choreographed, with precise descriptions including feints, slashes, and counters.  As of chapter 10, you won't be disappointed by the mix of physical and magical.
Magic System/Fantasy Elements: The mana-based magic system is centered on the Black Citadel’s core and is intriguing.  There are some items, like a magic sword Swelfalster, a self-heating cookpot, and the windmaker, as well.  The reincarnation mechanic of memories transferring to brothers grown in stasis is the main hook and makes me interested about the exact mechanics of it.
Style: The style fits and excels with fast paced action.  The scenes are clear.  Dialogue is good.  Personally, I would've preferred a little more dialogue and explanations, but the pull between keeping it fast paced, avoiding what some raters would slam for info-dumps, etc., doesn't make it so easy to find the perfect balance, and pleasing everyone 100% of the time is impossible.
Plot/Pace: The plot follows Velwin’s espionage mission and romance with Aloree, with high-stakes battles and political intrigue driving the story.  The pacing is brisk, and the story delivers on adventure.
Grammar: No issues that impaired readability for me.
Characters: Velwin is a compelling and heroic protagonist.  Aloree’s mix of diplomat and healer roles is interesting.  So far, characters like Pol and Jom are likable but in the background, sometimes to serve as comic relief.
Overall: ‘The Lives of Velnin,’ as of chapter 10, is a thrilling and interesting epic fantasy well-worth checking out.  Definitely give it a shot, especially if you’re an action-fantasy enthusiast!

Everything I have to say about this story has to be relative to the speed it was delivered. This is by far the fastest thing I've ever read. It is so fast, delivered in bite sized chunks that I was at chapter 10 before I knew it. There is not a single word that is wasted here.
As the consequences of being this fast, I reasonably expected some other major trade off but this had no such fault that stood out in any way. It knows what it is, it isn't trying to be anything else. Its a smooth ride from chapter 1, nothing gets in the way of the flow. This is polished, to the point and very lean. It can be enjoyed to its fullest with very little time investment.
The speed isn't to prove a point or there for no reason. It serves this story's primary mechanic. We snap back in time from point to point, multiple times from the beginning. This story can afford this unique narrative flow because it has short, efficient chapters. If this was any longer, this wouldn't work at all.
The style is very refined and efficient, it fits the story like a glove. It is versatile, delivering a range of scenes in a highly engaging fashion. It also easy to read, with high clarity and It paints very vivid pictures.
The story is quite fun, it is fast, but it built its world effectively. You will only know exactly what you need to know for a given/coming scene. It has a compelling premise, a great hook in the first chapter that shows exactly what you can expect moving forward.
The characters are key for this story, this is almost entirely delivered by characters and they are all characterized quite well despite the speed. Dialogue lines are to the point and the characters are likeable, easy to root for.
As for the grammar, there was no problem.

    Overall Review:
To readers searching for something new, this story gives you that. And fast. From the very first chapter, it establishes its own tone and world without hesitation, throwing you into a narrative that feels kinetic. The pacing almost never drags, the sword fights are sharp and brutal, and the emotional stakes are quite high. Though I don't look for romance in books, it didn't push me away from the read when it appeared.
    Style:
The prose is visceral and very quick in its implementation. The first-person narration pulls into the main character's head, giving us immediacy during battles and tender moments alike. Combat scenes are especially well rendered.
    Story (Slight Spoilers):
The narrative structure seems ambitious, so far as I've read, and has paid off. We begin with [REDACTED]'s death and work backward to understand how it happened, eventually looping forward past his reincarnation. The pacing remains strong, especially in the beginning and final acts of the first book.
    Character:
The character work here was a standout to me, especially in the prologue. [REDACTED]'s and his companions' journeys over book one was really fulfilling to read. As I mentioned, romance is never something I pursue, but it's done tastefully here.
    Grammar:
No problems here—though the prose is fast-paced and scenes proceed relatively quickly, the author’s writing ability shines through well.
