Description
"In a world where knowledge is literally power, how far will what you've learned on Earth take you?" Stefan Dawson was enjoying your typical college life when a visit to his local library turned into an unforgettable- and unwelcome- adventure. One moment he’s browsing the shelves, the next he’s thrust into a strange new world, full of bizarre creatures like lizardmen and magic he never could have even dreamt of. Tragically, there’s no explanation offered to him when this happens. No goddess offering answers, no grand monologue from some deity, and sadly- no cheat skills or convenient system to help him navigate this strange world. Not only is he powerless, but he also lacks any skills or talents that could nab him gainful employment in this new world. Lost, alone, and homeless; Stefan spends days wandering the streets of this world, until he stumbles upon the world’s magic system: Liberomancy, a form of magic fueled by magical texts called grimoires. Using his knowledge from Earth, Stefan begins creating his own grimoires- and finally finds a way to gain power and move up in this new world. To return home, Stefan must master the art of Liberomancy and uncover the dark secrets hidden beneath the surface of this world- secrets that may not only change his fate but also the future of both worlds forever. In this story you'll find: - A unique magic and leveling system based on magical texts called grimoires - A main character who starts from the bottom and slowly makes his way to the top - A main character without any cheat skills or a system - No harem (there will be a dedicated romance but it will be much later on in the story, and will be between the main lead and one woman) - New chapters every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6:03 A.M. - Supp Mr MikeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The first few chapters feel a bit rough, the plot is rushed, little effort is put into describing the environment, and many of the scenes would work better if the author showed us what happened rather than tell us what the MC did in a quick paragraph. However, the story picks up when he meets old granny and the magic system is intriguing. I’m excited to keep reading it.
- Atlas he who holds the skyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A fascinating magic system, with a lot of reasonable gain from being Isekaied. Love lizard men being a major race and the interactions with them sharing a city with humans. The human culture is also interesting. Good worldbuilding all around with a lot of potential. Not a OP protagonist yet and a significant slowdown in growth has already been introduced. That is a good thing! Slow growth is better and allows for character development. Very happy with this story.
- squorshRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm not really sure where to start with the review other than that the story delivered on exactly what I wanted from when I read the description.
The one minor nitpick I have, which has already been addressed at the time of writing, is that the first chapters are a bit short and don't have the best conclusions, they seem like they were written as one longer section before being split. This makes it so that sometimes the chapter break is in a bit of a weird place after an idea has been established but not elaborated on. I'm not an author and this is just taste but I feel like the story will benefit from the longer chapters it's pivoting to.
Edit (7/4/25): As of the writing of this review the chapter lengths have increased and the distinction between them has improved so it's only fair that I update this review to reflect that. - FallenArcRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Absolutely loving this novel so far! Love the concept behind it, and hoping now after seeing he wallet subspace he can take the game is element idea further. I know you need basic skills to get higher tier skills, perhaps wallet subspace could turn into a proper storage space and even eventually a full sub-space realm. Similarly potentially he could create his own skill for things like a status screen, or other video game/fictional elements people of this world would honestly have no idea to even begin imagining. Equally is going further with technology ideas. From basic physics, to more things like printers or computer programs you can use to copy texts as a way of easily being able to make copies of his own grimoires even. Honestly ive binged the entire works so far in just the last few hours and find myself absolutely impatient for more. Too see how he progresses, how he figures out his phone and what ultimate avenues that provides for him. What kind of other fun skills like his fish skill he can come up with or even discovering new grimoires. Looking forward too more and truly hope you continue this work into a long running series. Definitely the potential to be great.
- [email protected]Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0A great book
I have a ton of books that i like marked as favorites but for now i believe that this book has tons of stuff that i like alot so I am writing this recommendation for the people who will read this book because it is very good. - A. GriffinRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a slow burn rags to riches with an interesting premise and a relatable protagonist. Instead of cheating his way through, he's going to have to work his way up in a world he knows nothing about.
Style:
The writing does a good job of pulling the read along with appropriate tension and suspense. This is weaved in with the narrator's thoughts without bogging it down, showing off the protagonist's necessarily thoughtful approach.
There's elements that could easily veer into the absurd (this is a very different world), but they're handled well, selling the setting as a compelling and real place.
The writing style leans a little towards stream of consciousness over heavy description, which is very effective at keeping the reader in the head of the character and following their focus.
Grammar:
Grammar is good, except for the use of hyphens instead of em/en dashes (which doesn't really matter, you get used to it quickly).
Story:
It mixes established tropes (fish out of water rags to riches) with enough freshness to keep it interesting. It takes a more realistic approach than standard to Isakei—no getting stranded and instantly finding his feet here, which is nice to see.
Takes a little time to get going, but picks up steam when it does.
Characters:
The protagonist is relatable, pensive, and likeable (not a given in such stories). The technique of them looking back allows for drawing back the camera and giving us more self-reflection, which gives a more nuanced and deeper view on the character.
Closing Remarks:
A strong opening for an interesting story. Looking forward to following his slow and difficult rise to the top. - MrMillenialRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Having read up to the current chapter, it's a great find. I have thoroughly enjoyed the lighter aspects of the system, complete opposite of overly technical monstrosities of systems in other novels that have your eyes glazing over. A needed breath of fresh air. It's well paced, and an engaging read. I especially like the exposition within folk tale sections. The only points of improvement are at times the introspection of the MC can be a bit rambley, and I find him to be somewhat lacking. He certainly stands to grow a bit more in the upcoming arc, but we'll see.
- shadowwizardmoneygangRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a story typical isekai, story except it puts a more realistic and fantastical approach to the whole idea. The author focuses more on world building and magic systems then cheat skills and video game statuses The story follows an English major who finds himself stranded in a world of magic and mythical creatures. Despite his academic background, he struggles to find work and survive in a society that places little value on his skills. As he navigates this unfamiliar world, he encounters both hardship and fleeting moments of kindness, slowly unraveling the customs, language, and beliefs of this new realm.
Story:
The premise is unique and well-executed. The protagonist’s struggle for survival feels grounded and realistic, avoiding the typical overpowered fantasy tropes. The story takes its time unfolding, gradually revealing the world’s nuances rather than overwhelming the reader with exposition. The introduction of religious elements and local customs adds depth, making the world feel lived-in rather than just a backdrop.
Character:
The protagonist’s voice is strong, laced with dry humor and self-awareness, which makes his hardships engaging rather than overly bleak. His frustration and adaptation to this strange world feel natural. The side characters, such as the kind old woman, are simple but effective in their roles, providing contrast to the protagonist’s isolation. However, since many characters are only briefly encountered, they don’t leave a strong impression yet.
Grammar:
No major grammar issues stood out. The writing is clean and easy to follow.
Style:
The style is straightforward and effective, balancing humor with the weight of the protagonist’s situation. The descriptions are clear without being overly detailed, making it easy to visualize the world without slowing the pacing.
Overall:
This is an intriguing take on the "stranger in a new world" genre, focusing more on realism and struggle rather than immediate power fantasy. It blends survival, hu - ForrestTheManiacRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Fantastic start! Honestly I was a bit suspicious ot the quality by the description, I feared that it was just a "im sooo smart and better than the inhabitants of this world" type of story but instead it's been a well thought out story with personal politics, thought out language, a unique magic system and a plot that I am desperate to continue reading. Give it a shot!
- NillisaRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I'm really enjoying the story. I'm glad I found it. I usually only give 5 stars to stories I find emotionally moving, which I have not with this story thus far. But I am definitely going to keep reading it.
What I want to see more of:
Developing the world, both in the present and through lore. There is already a lot of this, and I like it.
Hints of how the material transforms into the particular grimoire.
Power structure and power plays. I can feel this beginning and I'm excited.
