- 96nana13Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I don’t usually follow this genre but the book was recommended by a friend. I was caught from the beginning by the two main characters, alike but so different. Watching as the struggle the young teenager who knows “everything” learns the hard way that she really doesn’t from a master that has basically lost all hope just to learn that he hasn’t!
It was well written so that it kept me going from chapter to chapter. I’m one of those people that sees a movie in my mind when I read a book! This one was vivid, active and I had no difficulty picturing the characters and the scenes! I can’t wait for the next in the series! - ARR62Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I love well written xianxa stories and this one is a very good one. Female MC who in one book goes from a talented, willful brat to a focused, determined young woman. Mentor who finds himself caring again. A father with enough live to see what his daughter really wants despite his wife's marital ambitions. For once, a YA beginning that didn't drive me nuts.
Okay, so overall, see above. It's a well told story that plunges you into the world with sight, sound, and smell. Even with the irritation of having to wait for the next chapter, I was able to immediately re-inmerse myself into the story-that's tough to do but this author excels at it.
The style is classic. There's no reinventing of xianxa here, it conforms to what we know and love. And it's well done.
The story itself isn't new except that this MC is female and not an empty headed one either. She's got spunk. What she doesn't have is path. Great set up and the author chooses to follow classic tropes except that this story depends on personal choice, will, and strength. Completely xianxa.
The characters are complete, 3D, whole people, not caricatures. The MC, the mentor, parents, visitors, officials, soldiers, alchemist, bandits all have distinct personalities and traits. It would be nice if the mother saw her daughter aa more than.a chess piece but I say that about many xianxa moms. The author is skilled at getting across the various characters traits and dispositions in a few words and they show us, not tell us, which makes it so good.
And I'm happy to say that this story has next to no grammatical errors. It's definitely a unicorn. Or maybe the author takes the time to edit before posting. Either way, it makes for a much more pleasant reading experience.
Finally, just read it. This is a book that flowed like a movie in my head which is the best I can say about any book. - TwentytooRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Currently my new favorite story on RR. it's very well written and characters are great with all their flaws that give them great depth. the characters are relatable and sympathetic. I love the imagery use to describe the choreography in the sword styles and fight scenes. it's just very cool, I love it. I would recommend this to everyone.
- crumjdRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really enjoyed this novel!
I think my favorite thing about it is it was written as a complete, stand alone, novel. And it is, at least for the moment, complete. The pacing is solid, and the plot is tight. It doesn't tease you with a million words of the same sort of updates over and over again while the author attempts to fumble their way to the finish-line with posts they're writing five minutes before they go up.
The character archetypes do run a hair more western than some novels, and I wish some of the character evolution had been slightly more heavily foreshadowed. However, those characters are well realized and highly relatable, so I don't think that minor quibble detracts much.
The settings runs to the more grounded end of the progression fantasy spectrum which works well as it makes the character's struggles feel more meaningful. No one is doing a 10,000 Dragon's punch to knock over a mountain. They're really sweating and really bleeding. I would say it also feels like it is genuinely set in the past. - sleepyirrationalRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is an excellent book, with good pacing. It's nice and contained. The characters are well fleshed out and the world building paints a nice picture. I especially liked the way cultivation is entwined with the normal world and are not just vague abstract legends as often presented
It's good enough to be published. - Bouncing BallRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I really liked the soul of this story.
The execution and the writing felt off often, so I wouldn't want to oversell it; but I really had fun reading it and I also liked the characters.
I find myself hoping for the author to keep writing, and looking forward to their next book (either continuing this story or something else).
